Tremendous review. Thanks for posting. I first heard the White Album in 1976. I was 10 years old and in the hospital recovering from Rheyes Syndrome. My family bought me the record to lift my spirits and also because I had been a huge Beatles fan since the age of seven. My roommate who was dying of leukemia had a record player next to his bed and he let me listen to the record. I’ll never forget hearing Martha My Dear and Obla Di Obla Da for the first time in that room. It made everyone in the room happy.
Got in for $49 at Wal-Mart yesterday!!! They had 4 of them. I couldn't believe it. And I just bought the regular release at Barnes and Noble a few weeks ago for about the same price. Yes, got a new turntable (scratch and dent AT 120 for 160 bucks) and a reloop concord needle with my stimulus money 💰
Worth mentioning that Child of Nature became Jealous Guy (Lennon's Imagine album), Circles was included on Harrison's Gone Troppo and yes, as mentioned below, Not Guilty was on Harrison's album 'George Harrison' which included the single 'Blow Away'. Nice review.

Thank you Michael, you've certainly whetted our appetites for our early Christmas on November 9th! I'm sure many people (myself included) have preordered both the 4 LP Set and the Deluxe Box of discs that you highly recommend. I remember 20 years ago there was a "30th Anniversary" of the White Album which was nothing special that I can recall, I thought, "When the White Album turns 50, I hope they'll do something special." Turns out they did...
Is there going to be any difference in quality or sound or anything at all between the 2 LP discs and the same 2lp discs in the 4 LP box set,being as they are pressed at different places? Genuine question from someone who can only afford the 2LP unless I sell something. I dunno a lung or whatever,lol. Seriously though really waiting for your reply. Thank you,Craig.
Don't sell a body part over this please! I was wondering the same thing! Especially since I was out at QRP on Saturday. They got the same lacquers from Abbey Road, but plating and pressing can make a major difference. However I believe QRP plated and pressed the 2 LP set for worldwide distribution and Optimal did the 4 LPs so if you are buying the 2 LPs you'll get the QRP.... I will try to do the comparison though.
Thank you for sharing your story from the record store. I am dying to hear this. I know I should be listening to the mono mixes because those are the mixes the Beatles worked hardest on, but I grew up on the stereo versions of the UK albums on CD and that’s what feels right to me.

Nice review! One thing though - In the deluxe set, the blu-ray contains 24/96 of the remix, 5.1 surround, and mono, but you do NOT get 24/96 high resolution of the Esher demos or sessions. For those, just the 16/44 on CDs 3-6

I agree that the artists shouldn’t be involved in remastering albums. Only thing with Zeppelin is Jimmy was also the producer.
Had to settle on getting the 2LP set since I've also ordered the deluxe CD set. Even so, I'm rather excited.
Hi Michael, in your Analogue Planet review you note that the CD version of the Esher Demos lost the Magic of the vinyl version. Is this also true of the CD of the main album or is that on par? Also the new mono transfer on the Blu-ray what are your thoughts on that ?

Thanks for the in-depth review! I too remember buying the White Album 50 years ago. I believe I paid $5.50 for it. The line was around the block to get in to the record store. I'm just about to put my MFSL version of it on eBay. We'll see what it gets.

Buy the 7 disc CD box set, the 5.1 mix is heaven. Like I imagined it would have sounded in the studio. By contrast the 1968 mono mix sounds like it did on AM radio in 1968. Love your videos Michael.
do you collect also obscure japanese electronic jazz music? or in general electronic music? im very curious about that because your collection looks huge! anyway hope you will show once some interesting not so popular music!:)

Thank you for the review. How do the new mixes compare to the original ? I believe many of the original , as many other albums, contain several reduction mixes to free up tracks, even when they switched to eight track partway into recording the album.
Have the mono mix and stereo mix on CD, several differences, both worth having

Thanks. Very informative. I didn't know about the Esher tapes. I too have played the white album over and over, especially side two, (so many songs for one side of an LP), then side one. Proof that I am a Beatles fan: I played Revolution No: 9 a lot of times - more times than it deserves!
What a coincidence, Michael. I was working in a record store in LA when the White Album came out. We had a nightmare during the XMAS rush season when we couldn't keep it in stock and Capitol Records couldn't press them fast enough. The result was a batch of returns with the same defect. The records were pressed sloppily. The grooves were not deep enough and the phonograph needle, excuse me-stylus- was sliding across the album!!! Really, the pressing was almost smooth.
Thank you for all you do Michael. A friend recently gave me his record collection and it contains and never-played original EMI Parlophone of the White album. The sound is incredible and surface is dead quiet; the 4 pics are pristine. I had the pics framed and have them in my record room. Clueless friend indeed ;-)
If you have the White Album in pristine condition on the Parlophone label, and NOT the Apple label, you’re sitting on a “ Goldmine “ pun intended ...

I've got the deluxe book version and the 4 vinyl boxset excellent release and Christmas has come early for me as I had to buy myself couldn't see my kids getting this for me lol . I just got the 4 lp box set mine is in stereo from Walmart (Go Figure) $51.00 Just wondering did they make one in Mono 4-Lp version as well??

I notice Michael, you always are able to tell a great detail of information for lots of albums. Even if someone hands you a record, there's a good possibility you will have some deal of info on it. I'm curious, where do you source your info usually from (besides info included on record sleeves/inserts), and also how the heck do you remember it haha. I love learning about stuff like that, but I can read something then soon forget it.
Most of The Beatles history info he referenced has been stated for years now. The only info he stated which was not was the part of the new releases and his personal details of when he got his original copy. Great review with exception to the opinion bits which i wouldn't necessarily agree with unless there is some facts cited...5.1, Artists shouldn't be a part of a remaster, no exclamations on the original analog to modern day transformation if there is any...etc etc

ANOTHER fantastic video, Mr. Fremer! Highly informative and entertaining as always. And as for your recommendation on getting the 4xLP edition...Well, let's just say you don't have to tell ME twice, 'cos that's the version I already planned on getting to begin with! :-) That said, my only regret is that you didn't show us the other double album set in the box containing the Esher demos. I'd noticed that, in the first official trailer, the Esher Demo disc in the 3-CD set and deluxe box had the crude green/white "Apple Custom Recording" acetate/test-pressing label with old-style typewritten lettering. I was curious to see if the vinyl version had the same, along with any possible alternate photos on the inner gatefold, etc. But alas, the rest of us shall find out for ourselves come November 9th (unless there's some way we could sweet-talk you into making a second video showing the Esher vinyl). Again, loved the video!

You have just made up my mind to get the 4 LP set over the 2 LP set. Canceled my order for the 2 LP and got the 4 LP Esher set. Now for the hardest part.... The Waiting is the hardest part. Looks nice but I have to say I am curious which apple labels are on each of the LP's???

Pre-ordered today... thnx for the heads up and Beatles have been with me since the 60s because of my parents records and they so much influenced my not-only-music taste - the Beatles i mean... my parents too in a way ,-). They (the Beatles ;-) developed so fast and invented so much music and sound engineering wise (together with their combatants)...
For me Revolver was ground breaking too.

What worried me about this release, is when Mr. Martin said he did not want it too hi fi. I hope the cd and lp sounds better than the tracks they released on Tidal. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you.

I'm a reviewer and some reviewers got it early. I was asked to not post this until November 9th or post a review until then, but UMe emailed and said I could do both so I did!
I am going to hold out for the 100th anniversary edition.That one has George Martins' great great grandson remixing the lp from the original wax cylinders .
Wonderful Michael. Just one tiny thing that matters not in the great scheme of things but you might find helpful, Esher is pronounced Eeesher. It’s a frightfully posh place in Surrey! :) At least it was years ago when I grew up in the UK, not having lived there for almost twenty years it might have gone downhill a bit! Keep up the good work.

I'm so happy to hear you refer to those people who say you can't hear a difference at 96K imbeciles. I've been doing high resolution digital recording now for over 15 years. I know they're imbeciles but hearing it from you is just overwhelmingly validating.

I would like to get the four LP box set, but would love a mono copy, the Beatles sound better in mono in my opinion. What about a mono reissue that came out a few years ago, which is a top loader?

Why do you consider the UK version is better than the US? Is this a case of a bad cut, 'adjusted' mising (I was stunned to hear the Manic Street Preachers' Gen Terrorists album was ''rocked up'' so I know they do this).

so it seems that the 2lp set is pressed by QRP and the 4lp set is pressed by optimal (which in my experience presses a lot of nice records but many of them are warped.
The blu ray also has the album in 96/24 5.1 surround sound. I can't wait.

The ads I've seen for this state that there is a 64 page book included. But there doesn't seem to be one in your box.

I bought the album on audio cassette in the mid 1970s. The jacket had a picture of a blonde girl. I bought the CDs during the 1980s. I will buy the new CD set.
is your original british pressing in MONO?
Not Guilty was released 1976 on an album by George titled George Harrison. The album featured the hit Blow Away.

Although I am a fan and bought all their records on vinyl when they originally came out. I have this on CD and am not prepared to spend the enormous amount of money required for this set, even though the White Album is my favourite LP.

I'm personally getting the 4lp edition and was always going to for one thing it costs less than the 2l.p edition in the UK at just £40 as opposed to £88 it also has more on it and it's therefore better value for money on amazon. I am a little disappointed they didn't keep to the original UK packaging with the top loading sleeve and the fold overs, with not necessarily numbers but a stamp saying Esher and remix of something. They didn't copy the mono cover for sgt pepper but instead used the stereo which is a cleaner cover reflecting the cleaner sound but it doesn't have the mystical quality of the mono, all in all i think they're just trying to be consistant with previous releases in terms of packaging
I am getting the deluxe set for the mono transfer. 'Not Guilty' ended up on George's excellent eponymously named solo album.

kinda skipped over the whole reason of the blu ray which is being in a new 5.1 and dolby atmos mix.
