    I boxed as a kid and have broken my right hand in street fights twice on peoples heads. Now I palm strike to the head. Learned in the police academy, hard to soft, soft to hard. Fist to gut, palm to head.

      @Mitchx42 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      gene stephens You should do push ups on your knuckles to condition them, also look up Okinawan knuckle conditioning.

    • @gamongames
      @gamongames 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      How much conditioning do you need to protect bones from breaking upon bones?

    • @walterstephens958
      @walterstephens958 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gabriela Montemor difficult to say. Depending on how hard you hit. A marshal artist prepares differently I would assume not being a martial artist myself.

    • @brottarnacke
      @brottarnacke 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      But what are you really doing when you "condition your knuckles"? I've seen old Karate masters with knuckles that look like shit because of scar tissue, but how much does that really protect your hand while punching, and is it worth it? I really don't think that stuff is gonna feel nice when you get older. I don't really believe in it to be honest. I'd rather spend that time just really making the muscles in my hands and forearms stronger. Knuckle pushups are good for that, but also rope climbing, rock climbing and gi grappling for that matter.

    • @firstlast-wg2on
      @firstlast-wg2on 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Mitchx42 Conditioning is useful yes, but you should always opt for soft to hard, hard to soft.
      I don't want to call you out but you mention Okinawan knuckle conditioning and it's just ironic because a lot of chinese martial arts descend from Okinawa and they themselves used the variety of strikes, and well, the conditioning was used, yes, but they emphasized the very idea of soft to hard. Spear-hand strikes, the knuckle punches, and ridge-hand strikes were used against soft targets, ridge-hands were even focused on the groin, whereas the hammer-fist, open-hand and "karate chop" were used on hard targets, to avoid injury. It's all very well conditioning, and there is merit to it, yes, but conditioning is there much as stretching is there, to avoid injury, and much like stretching is to avoid injury with bad form during weight training, conditioning is there to avoid taking damage from more dangerous shots. So I'd say that you should really focus on an open-hand to the skull as opposed to a fist, it's more logical to do it as opposed to keeping up this dumb idea that you need iron-body routines to strike with your fist.

    Thanks for the ongoing videos and insight. I am a Krav Instructor in so cal. who very much appreciates the depth and focus on realty, something gat times is still lacking within even the "realty based self defense systems". I've been harping on my student for sometime about the dangers of being defense, not putting a threat on it's heels so to speak, preemptive striking and many of the same things I see you espousing. Unfortunately, I am one of the few in the cadre of instructors that makes the point you make a priority. I can't tell you how many times I've told someone the goal is to break what you touch, sometimes to the smirk of other instructors watching with that "he's crazy" look. Anyways, keep it up and awesome work. PS Picked up the seminar video and fully intent on utilizing some of your points within my own training as well as teaching.

    Shades of Geoff Thompson and Lee Morrison here. My only comments would relate to the nature of the fence and perception management.
    The fence is as much a psychological barrier as a physical one. Be aware of how you can potentially avoid the conflict by subconsciously blocking his physical attack options whilst giving him opportunities to back down.
    Premptive striking is always going to be a legal minefield. Most peoples perception of who is the aggressor is as simple as "Who hit first?", so make it easy for them. Step back. call attention to what's going on, ask the bad guy to stop, ask people to call the police. Step back again - and then hit him.
    It's surely better to be tried by 12 than carried by six but doing what you can to ensure that you are not seen as the bad guy when delivering a potentially lethal strike will mean that you are much, much more likely to get to spend time with your family rather than looking out on a yard.

  • @VinDcator
    @VinDcator 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    He makes sense. The best time to strike is while the attacker is engaged in thought or talk. Even 1/2 sec. can make a real difference.

  • @anonymoususer6334
    @anonymoususer6334 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent series on practical thought processes when violence likely or eminent. Ryan is an excellent instructor of defensive skills and techniques. Judging by many of the previous comments the distinction is not understood.
    Ryan is not teaching his students how to fight. He is not teaching MMA cage skills or emphasizing competitive defenses. No! He is training his students how to survive violent situations. And that means if you cant leave it change it.
    Someone mention sucker punch? What, you think that is cheating? Since when are there rules to survival? Losing is not an option worth consideration, and any limit you accept imposes surrender on yourself.

    Good pre-emptive dialogue can be inspired by the kinds of security questions they ask you for online. When an aggressor approaches you, try:
    "Hey!What's your mothers maiden name?" Then strike.Or..."Whats your first pets name?"As before, strike. Perhaps for a more sophisticated "quick trigger" response: "Elementary School?..." say it likes its a question, & when they try to answer, strike.

    • @michaelreynolds6543
      @michaelreynolds6543 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      it has to be a question that makes the brain think it has to be abstract asking a question that can be answered with a simple yes or no is not good enough and wont work IE; you a tough guy (yeah) you got a problem (yeah) what colour is tuesday ? the brain will be in a state of flux now because of the abstract nature of the question it has nothing to do with the current situation you now have a small window of opportunity so you had better leasrn to use it practice this so it rolls of your tongue easily and incorporate it into your training make it flow make it seem fluid what goes on pre-fight is so much more important than the fight itself control the prefight and you will win

    I'm not much of a fan of Krav Maga, although I have trained in Haganah. Despite that, the advice given here is solid in street defence terms. I do question the safety of punching to the jaw or side of the head. I know too many people who have broken several bone sin their hands due to this. Heel of the hand is much safer.

  • @Karma8Kami

    I always preferred a curved "knife hand" strike for those types of strikes as that allow for a grip immediately after making contact, having hit what I intended or not, I always end up with a crank point high on the body I could use to shift their center of mass to somewhere more useful, say where their head will be lead directly into a wall.
    It can be fairly easily timed from a defensive, palms forward position if you drop your body weight into the chop it still creates good, brain rattling force and it naturally gets you into a powerful position to "take their forehead for a walk"..

    My problem with this is that in order for me to legally defend my self (in Norway) I would have to strike the attacker at the split second after the attackers first punch. If I'm striking first in this scenario, it would be seen as escalation towards a fight.
    Martial artists gets harsher sentences even If they fought in self defence. non fighters has more latitude if they can prove they were in a highly emotional state.

    Love the video's guys! Thought a good topic for a video could be Fighting Dirty. In a life or death situation technique and rules are tossed out the window and lets face it, not everyone is strong or are trained fighters who can through a proper hook in a given situation. So for those with no skills, strength or training. Might be paramount to survive to have a bag of tricks to go to, such as groin attacks, eye gouges, or the use of keys to defend your self Example would be a extremely large man trying to overpower a woman a fraction of his size. How does she get out? Weak vs The Strong could also be a video. Keep it up guys!

    effective strike any thoughts on a straight left palm forearm in line with stepping left foot?

  • @firstlast-wg2on
    @firstlast-wg2on 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    For people who want to punch, a "slap" aka an open hand strike is actually much faster if you're doing a more straight punch (as opposed to swinging your arm) because the arm is not contracting in the forearm and in the bicep. Basically, the bicep and flexors in the forearm are used to close the arm, but tensing your arm and closing the fist tightly engages these muscles, when really you want the triceps to engage ( the muscle that extends the arm), so by avoiding engaging the arms that reduce the angle of the arm, the muscles that extend the arm are isolated and allow maximal power. Although I'm not a fan of most martial arts in modern times, in ancient times they WERE used in war and defence, and this is why Wing Chun is effective in it's philosophy of relaxation for power and speed.
    Uhh, also I think it's worth me mentioning I'm not dropping Wing Chun's name because I'm a Wing Chun ass kisser like a lot of youtube and the internet is because of bruce lee and the ip man movies, I'm actually just dropping its name because it does have merit as a striking martial art, much as boxing does.

    Under Irish law a preemptive strike is considered self defense if the aggressor gives signals that suggest that they are going to physically attack you (such as pointing in your face for example).
    Under Irish law, you have already been assaulted if someone gives strong signals that they are going to physically attack you. In this way a preemptive strike can be considered self defense.

    • @neilgoldie5936
      @neilgoldie5936 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup bang on, UK law is the same. If you are in fear for you safety or that of your family (given that a guy is being very aggressive toward you less than a meter away) then hitting first is still self defense.

    • @sgt7
      @sgt7 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And it's amazing how many people are not aware of this. I have heard many people advise me to wait for the other guy to hit first so that my response can be classified as self defence.

      NEVER NEVER NEVER wait to be attacked you will lose and die this is where most if not all martial arts fail you have to be pre-emptive but you do have to assess the situation very well first

    I want to practice and learn more krav maga ( reality version, not that fake stuff they put in the movies) but I don't have anyone to spar with, I do have a punching bag tho but its one of those ones that sit on the ground and doesn't have the weight (sand) in the actual bag.

    I was under the assumption that when you went for a KO shot that the idea was to snap the neck as opposed to rattling the brain in the cerebrospinal fluid. Not being smart. Just making sure the neck took more torque.

    My question is... what are the optimal strikes at the very beginning of a sure fight no flight scenario. Say the guy is walking fast to you? Say he is standing in ur face talking shit? Say he puts the old dukes up and says lets go?
    My success rate is pretty high as 10 yrs in Law Enforcement i never lost a fight when alone and it was hand to hand no spray no stick no gun... but ive been training my son and looking for current or new tactics. Ps ive always taught if a fight is definitely going down.. hit first to hit last.

      I think it depends on the situation mate....For a start though, if you've let someone majorly aggressive get in your face your already losing...a push or "educational stop" will work for this as were taught in Krav. If hes walking towards you shouting, shout back and move backwards! if you cant then go pre-emptive and strike however u feel comfortable, if hes coming up on you fast shouting hes not there to talk. Me and my dad train all the time (hes ex royal marines) and im a boxer, i do krav maga and muay thai. Train hard, fight easy brother.

    I'm not sure you can negate legal pursuit if you engage in this. Very hard to prove that "a punch was/is imminent" if he/she hasn't struck or tried to strike yet.
    If you f*ck the guy up with a one-punch - or "coward punch" as they are now labeled in some countries - very hard to evidence that you should not be in the clink.

      Alive in a cell is better than dead on a slab. In many cases you can justify use of force by providing evidence that you were in fear for your (or others) life. Having a good lawyer helps.

      Or what I have used in the past when I was going for a stroll with a female college and a guy was following us was power walk turn a corner and sprint. (or at least what was a sprint for her) The creep found 3 more times that night as we tried to dog leg and loop around multiple blocks and get back to the office and avoid him.

    Any advice on how to deal with the assault charge that follows?

    • @MAlford65
      @MAlford65 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Getting the hell out or a good lawyer. Most "Use of Force" statutes would allow for that strike to take place if you can articulate your reason behind it. If during the investigation I knew he was with his family and the other person was being extremely aggressive so he struck and got his family out the only charges I would file would be against the guy who got smacked for Disorderly Conduct and depending on what he said, and whether it was recorded or had witnesses, Terroristic Threats or Actions.
      I'm an LEO and upon investigation I believe the vast majority of good LEO's would take the same action.

    • @RedEyedJack
      @RedEyedJack 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MAlford65 I agree. disparity of force is another point. If there are multiple aggressors and you are alone this technique may be your escape route. Knock the first guy out and beat feet. If you are with your wife and children and someone gets aggressive with you, you should be able to explain that you were worried for their safety as well.

    • @MAlford65
      @MAlford65 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. Most officers understand the idea of protecting people and violence of action. If the officer doesn't perceive it that way then the defense in court would be more than strong enough to produce reasonable doubt.

    • @bferguson515
      @bferguson515 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can articulate that you were being threatened and were in eminent danger of receiving serious bodily injury, then you have the right to defend yourself. In most states someone standing in front of you with their fist clenched saying "I'm going to beat your ***" is = to assault.
