    • @rachelsenglish
      @rachelsenglish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You can't really say the W consonant sound in isolation - it is really created by moving into a following vowel sound. So I would say that you would release it into the following sound in order to make it clearly.

Did you know that the word why /waɪ/
Is phonetically considered a true thiphthong i.e. three vowel sounds or semivowel + a diphthong pronounced together within the same syllable?
Some linguistics say that in words like
Fire , flower and employer , for example, occur thiphthongs , others however, say don't because these three words can be pronounced like two- syllable words: fire /'faɪ ər/, flower / ˈflaʊ ər /, foyer /'fɔɪ ər /.
So in these words actually occur a sequence formed by diphthong + vowel (in the following syllable)
In IPA transcriptions diphthongs are transcribed with two symbols and the second sound of diphthongs can be represented three different ways :
    Closed vowels: [i] ; [u]
    Near closed vowels: [ɪ];[ʊ]
    And with the semivowels (glides):
    [j]; [w]
Diphthongs like [eɪ], [aɪ], [ɔɪ], [aʊ],
[oʊ] can be transcribed as [ei], [ai],
[ɔi], [au], [ou] or [ej], [aj], [ɔj], [aw]
    [ow].
Diphthongs like [eɪ], [aɪ], [ɔɪ], [aʊ], [oʊ] are called falling diphthongs and sequences formed by [ j ] + vowel sound and [w] + vowel sound as in the words yes [jɛs] and wet [wɛt] are called rising diphthongs.
So in words like why [waɪ]~[wai]~[waj] and yolk [joʊk]~[jouk]~[jowk], phonetically occur true triphthongs.

Hi Pk! Great question. Actually, the upper red line is the palate above your upper teeth and the lower red line is your tongue position! The white lines are teeth. I hope this clears that up, the most important thing to note here is how low the front of the tongue tip goes behind the back of the bottom teeth. Thanks for your question and have a great week ahead!

Interesting question! This would make a great video! I think you could think of the W including a mini version of the OO as in BOO vowel - but it would be VERY quick, whereas the OO as in BOO vowel in 'food' would have the shape of stress, it would be longer, and much clearer.
