Thank you Scott, it was a pleasure working with you. The Sheriffs table is now back in a prominent place in the Castle after being in storage for 3years. Hopefully it will now last another 150years, but if anything should happen before then we definitely know who to call!
Thank you so much Frank. It was an honour to be able to work on such a beautiful piece of history. And thank you for allowing us to film the amazing craftsmanship throughout Trafalgar Castle to share with our viewers - as you can see by the comments, people are really enjoying it!
My college, Judson College was started in 1838. It closed in 2021. I love the Gothic style at this woman’s college. I have a parlor set that is the SAME style as the oak game table. I no longer do refinishing. I do love history, and wish I knew the name of the style of the oak table!
@@FixingFurniture I think @frankh675 should ad this 2 video's to his channel with your permission.
I've built custom homes for over 40 years but nothing that could compare to this work of art. I could spend a week in just one room trying to detail the craftsmanship. What got me into the building trades was being able to tour some of the castles in Europe while in the U.S. Army there. I was then and still now wowed by not only the skill but also the patience it took to build these masterpieces. Thank you for the small tour at the end.
As always, time spent watching and learning from you is time well spent.
Thanks again.
Awesome to see another video Scott!!
Thanks for watching!
This was one of your best videos. I will never restore furniture, but I learned so much about wood movement, color work, etc. The castle is beautiful.
Wow, thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it. Scott
What a fabulous, sympathetic restoration you did on this table! Imagine all the conversation held during a game of cribbage or checkers or such played at this table. So much has happened in history, let alone amongst the people who lived, worked and were educated here! The castle is so wonderful, and so tastefully decorated. I wonder will they get you to fill in the broken woodwork along the full length of the bannisters along the staircase. I noticed so many sections missing. There’s another great job for you! Suggest it to them saying your viewers even noticed it. Good luck with your projects, from Melbourne, Australia. 😊❤️🦘🇦🇺
Lovely video. Thank you for the tour of the castle.
Glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful table, beautiful renovation.
Thank you very much!
What a daunting prospect to be entrusted with a major restoration on such an historic piece. the end result............Exquisite.
Yep they most definitely picked the right guy to fix the table!
Mind blowing 🤯 awesome!
Love your work, and your videos!
Scott, I truly loved watching both parts of the restoration process! Very, very well done! The details in repairing and replacing pieces was awesome to watch! Loved the classical music as well! Finally, you seem more relaxed before the camera. I know you've been at this for many years. Looking forward to many more!
Your two videos were so enjoyable and your work on the table was perfect. Putting the large caster in the center of the table base was brilliant. When you brought out the string to check the level of that caster, I immediately thought of my Dad, who used that method for so many things. I’m in my mid-seventies now, but I remember very clearly how my brothers and I would joke, “Get the string!” whenever my Dad started a new project. Thank you for sharing this nice experience.
Thank you sir. For letting us go through the Castle. Being in another corner of the world and still be able to see 😇
The love you show to each piece of furniture and the respect to the history it deserves
The wood shavings.......
I don't know what to say ❤❤❤❤👏👏👏👏👏
Absolute legend. You've done all the former crafters proud with your work here.
I love absolutely everything about this.
Impressive work, loving restoration. It's wonderful that we still have craftsmen like yourself who can aspire to the standards which were commonplace 150 years ago.
What do you need to be a craftsman?
Diligence, Patience, Practice, Patience, Patience, and the ability to listen and learn from experts.
Oh, and did I say Patience?!
Fantastic. Thank you!
The selection of music adds to the delicacy of your work❤
They found the right man to repair the table this time! Wonderful craftsmanship Scott and such an interesting video. Thank-you!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing that.
Beautifully restored!
Thank you very much!
I really enjoyed this series! Great job!
Awesome, thank you!
Wow! The restoration turned out amazing! Trafalgar is absolutely stunning. Cannot even imagine the man hours invested to build and do all the intricate wood working to finish it!!
After this video series Lee Valley would be lucky to sponsor you!
Love seeing the repair work vanishing into the rest of the piece.
What a beautiful job!
Thank you! Scott
This piece was restored with such care and skill. I watched with awe at the way you worked . It came out so beautiful! Thanks for sharing this with us. 😊
Like the music.
Appreciate watching you color match. I learned a lot from it. Did not know about putting shellac in between the layers of stain and i dont think it would have made sense to me if i hadnt seen it. Thank you for the class!
Awesome experience! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
That staircase in the castle is especially beautiful. Also: those built-in sculpture niches! Wow. Superb job on the table!
Yes, I'm glad you enjoyed the interior of the castle. Thanks for sharing that! Scott
What a beautiful building. I am happy there are craftsmen like you who can maintain the building and its contents. With the repairs and slight modifications you made to the table it will easily last another 150 years.
It was an honour to do this work and preserve a piece of history
Thanks Scott...beautiful restoration, beautiful artwork, beautiful castle...
Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome work, with thought and care!
Thank you! Cheers!
Incredible restoration! And lovely music! You’re an artist!
You, sir, are truly a master craftsman. In fact, you are the Bob Ross of furniture repair. 😊 seriously, it is so informative and enjoyable watching your videos.
That was Fantastic!! Bravo! Excellent craftsmanship! Great video. Thanks! 😎👍
Appreciate watching you color match. I learned a lot from it. Did not know about putting shellac in between the layers of stain and i dont think it would have made sense to me if i hadnt seen it. Thank you for the class!
Glad it was helpful! Cheers. Scott
A lot of work went into restoring that table but I think the results are fantastic. And thanks for the tour of the castle as I love architectural history.
great video good job scott
Thank you Robert! Glad you enjoyed it!
Watching the restoration was wonderful. I really enjoy learning new things about the wood furniture I love.
The castle is beautiful. All the trim and doors are absolutely magnificent. Thank you for the tour and the lesson
Your very welcome. I’m glad you enjoyed it! Scott
that repair came out bang on and its improved over the original so it can outlast all of us.
That's the hope. As restorers, history tells us what happens over time, but the key to success is solving the right problems. Cheers! Scott
Scott, your craftsmanship is outstanding. I’ve always been a fan of millwork, especially when done at a time when today’s tools weren’t available, so thank you for the tour of the mansion!!! The beautiful music was a nice touch, too! 💜 I rotate my channels between you, Thomas Johnson, and Jason from Epic Upcycling. You’re my Xanax. 😊
👍👍👍.Thank you Scott
Absolutely worth every minute I spent watching, rewinding and rewatching. The process of how you chose the correct stain, wow. I took for granted that was the easiest part and quickly learned I have a lot more to learn. The lessons taught in these videos i will use, but I sincerely hope some budding woodworking artist is inspired by your skill, knowledge and attention to detail. The school definitely chose the right man for job.
An outstanding repair. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thank you Glen. Glad you enjoyed it! Scott
Loved the restoration and the field trip
Awesome! Would you be interested in seeing more field trips in the future? Scott
So beautiful! And how amazing was it to see it in situ😍 Thank you for taking the time to make this restoration tutorial - I really appreciate the effort and skill that goes into making these videos - I learn something new each time. Bonus sight-seeing too...love it!!!
This is stupendous from the craftship to the editing and history content, these videos are a proud testament to your many skills.
Wow, thank you very much! I appreciate your support and being a subscriber! Scott
Nicely done with much finesse.
Scott, I've just found your channel and I'm loving it. hopefully if and when I get my hip replaced and Back bone re-attached my tiny shop will get a workout again. Your channel has given me a reason to hope again for better mobility and what I could try doing if I have a good outcome. Thank You
Fascinating! Wonderful to watch your skill and infinite patience. Yes, would love to see your workshop, it is SO TIDY and organised. ❤️❤️❤️
The workshop tour is the next video... coming up! Scott
The various restoration details are all so interesting. Particularly liked the info about scroll shapes in woodworking and a scroll saw.
I learned so much from these two episodes of meticulous work. Thank you!
What an incredibly beautiful work of sympathetic restoration to this table, and what a truly amazing work of architecture as a whole. I’m a huge historical architecture fan myself, and I love this! Great work, you’re a very skilled and talented artist! I would have loved to have seen their reaction to your finished work though!
Scott: these two videos showing the restoration of the table and then the tour were just wonderful. I enjoyed it immensely. What a treat! Thank you so much. Carol from California
Glad you enjoyed it Carol! Thanks for your support!
As usual, excellent work, and the tour of the castle was amazing, such craftsmanship and style, it’s inspiring, sad those days are long gone, Scott thank you for sharing.
Amazing restoration, very sympathetic work. 👍👍
Thank you! Scott
You do beautiful (and thorough) restorations
I'm glad you like them. Thank you for your support and being a subscriber! Scott
Wow! You did a fantastic job. That stained glass window with the coats of arms and all the heraldry symbols was fantastic! It was a way of showcasing the family’s genealogy when reading and writing weren’t as common…
Oh, that's cool. Thank you for sharing that! Scott
Nice work! Loved the background music!
I was lucky enough to spend 6 years of my life living at Trafalgar Castle as a student in the late seventies and early eighties. It was a wonderful experience to live in such a place. I see they have replaced the steps in the main staircase since then. The original steps had the same dark patina as the rest of the staircase. We weren’t allowed to use it; only staff and senior students as I suppose it was weakened by then and they were a bit treacherous. We got to walk down it on prom night when our dates arrived. The octagon table used to be located in the huge bay window in the upper main hall where your tour began and there seems to be a long rectangular table with benches there now. We used to do homework and have meetings at that table and we heard that in the early seventies, a gun and pack of playing cards were found in one of the drawers that was stuck or secret. Sheriff Reynolds was a gambler and lost his fortune and had to sell the Castle to the United Church who turned it into a school. Thank you for preserving the table, you did a beautiful job. I didn’t recognize where it’s placed now. Probably safe from further damage by ruffians like we were!
Thanks for sharing that Catherine!
Thank you for the information Catherine!. I am the current Facility Manager at Trafalgar and I am always looking for tidbits of info like when the stair treads may have been replaced and the locations of furniture during certain eras. Many things in the castle have been moved around over the many years. the octagon table that we call the "Sheriffs table" is currently in the Reception room. we relocated it to that space because we are turning it into an archives room of sorts. we use it for small meetings and interviews etc. and have installed a display cabinet with treasures. we have photos from the late 1800s and early 1900s showing the table in that room as well. This September will be the 150yr Anniversary of the school opening with many events like community BBQ and a 150yr celebration Gala etc. We would love to see any and all friends of Trafalgar and Alumni, please try to stop by!
What an amazing experience to restore history. It has been a real pleasure watching this table come back to life. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Glad to hear you enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing that! Scott
This is in. My opinion the best video you’ve made and I think I’ve seen them all thanks from the uk
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing that! Scott
Very relaxing video, and instructional. Second time I watch it, as some of these cross to ASMR world = more views. Love the talk and sounds, nuances, and calm music. The final work is exceptional.
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed various aspects of our work. Scott
Great work Scott. Allowing scrollwork movement was the right call. Trafalgar Castle was kitted out in the heyday of architectural woodworking. It's a baby though, some of the castles In our area go back 800 years. Thanks for posting.
I love your choice of music too. One of my favourite pieces. What a wonderful restoration you’ve accomplished. Greetings from Australia
What was the song?
@@petercreamer2042 Josef Suk Serenade in E Flat Major, Op.6
What a great restoration 👍👍
Thank you! Scott
A wonderful commission for you and a fabulous experience for us! Thanks so much for sharing your work and the craftsmanship in the castle.
Holy cow! I’m gobsmacked by your talent! That castle is amazing. The details that used to go into buildings is simply stunning. Thank you for sharing!!
Beautiful restoration. And thanks for the tour of this impressive building. Many years ago I was on a team who restored the moldings inside the Québec Parliament. It was hard and tedious work, but I felt proud to contribute at restoring and preserving a part of our Canadian heritage.
Very cool! Thanks for your preservation work!
What an splendid building. Thank you for sharing this with us. Your work on the table means it can be admired for generations to come.
You did a wonderful job on this piece.
Thank you! Scott
Sir you are a true master of your craft, love seeing the castle got to tour some in Germany really loved those
Really interesting to see how you ended up using different stains to match the original on the surface vs endgrain! Makes perfect sense that it would absorb differently, but this had never occurred to me.
Beautiful job Scott thanks.
As i watched you mount the center castor i was thinking i might have tried to somehow spring load the center castor. Love your videos
Great work, Scott. I loved watching how you skillfully brought this table back to life. And Suk's Serenade was a very tasteful accompaniment to both your work and this beautiful castle's interiors. Salutations from Paris.
Enjoyed following your meticulous r restoration and the accommodations incorporated to prevent damage.
Very cool thanks 🔥🔥🔥
It always amazes me the work that goes into the building of complex moldings and casements. I went through the governor's house in colonial Williamsburg and it was quite ornate but not to the extent of Trafalgar Castle. Thank you for sharing this wonderful place with us. I hope to visit the castle sometime.😊❤
fantastic video!
Bravo!
AWESOME WORK SCOTT. Truly wonderful work and showing us the Castle with its wonderful details has left me with a jaw-dropping wonder that there isn't and words to describe. Thank you so much from Australia. (Angela).
Glad you enjoyed it Angela! Thanks for sharing that
Great job with the repair! I am especially impressed with the scroll saw work with such difficult wood, and you are the master at matching colors and stains! I think I’m going to check into the acrylic stains. You make it look easy, but I know better! Nice job!
Thank you very much! I love the acrylics
Thank you so much for the tour. They were blessed to have you restore the table!
Masterful restoration Sir! loved the insights into the making of the piece as well as the history and beauty of the castle. The music was a perfect accompaniment to a fabulous pair of videos. Thank you for sharing your craft with us.
Awesome! Thank you! The music selection was chosen to complement the elegance of the castle so I'm glad you appreciated that. Scott
great stuff, you're a very patient worker.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. Scott
I have been really enjoying all your videos - even your old ones. I haven't seen many videos of what to do when you have a broken off tenon in chairs and tables etc. I encounter it quite often - and was wondering what you normally do.
It's always amazing to me how much work can go into a single building; one could spend an entire lifetime not just creating these pieces and details in just this one structure in the first place, but an entire career merely maintaining, preserving, and restoring same in still just this one structure. I was separately wondering about the table; I would assume this was commissioned work at the time, and wouldn't something like this include a maker's mark and a date of creation? I do not recall seeing anything of the sort but maybe this is not as common as I assumed (or I just missed it!)? Anyway, a very nice building and a very nice restoration--a pleasure to view in both cases.
You do beautiful work. Thank you. I've been watching since you had 5000 subs. I'm so glad your channel is growing.
Thank you so much for your support and being a subscriber. It's nice to have you on this journey with us! Scott
Admiro a competencia de dois restauradores, você e Ton Jhonson! Trabalhos fantásticos.
Admirador do Brasil
Well thank you! Scott
Nice restoration, plus I thought that your interior photography of the castle was very skilful.
Oh, thank you. Laurie (my wife and business parter) shot some of those interior scenes, so I have to give her credit too. Glad you enjoyed it! Scott
Thank you for sharing! I enjoyed the details of the restoration and the step back to an era of unparalleled craftsmanship. Very refreshing to get a break from our modern rush rush world .
Awesome 2 part video on this really neat table. Fantastic work! I like seeing how you tackle each issue and hearing you explain the logic behind it. I do have a question, though... I had assumed that the second foot that you turned would have made a perfectly suitable center caster. Is there a specific reason you didn't use it? And the craftsmanship on the millwork and trim in that place is mind blowing. I could look at that all day!
Good question. The center caster was 100% concealed, so no need to add it. I made 2 so I could pick the best one to use... and it gave me an opportunity to test how effective my dust collection prototype is - I measured the dust left behind without dust collection.
@@FixingFurniture Thanks, Scott! Completely make sense. Your lathe dust collection system is a great looking setup, for sure. I really need to make some chips with mine and practice using it more!
It would have been cool if you would have made one of those caster covers for the center caster like the ones for the feet. that way it would have looked like it belonged there. and covered up the caster. Awesome work, really like you chanel.
The castle was extremely beautiful thanks for the tour, you did superb work on the restoration of that table and I do believe they made the right decision to bring you in
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you very much. Scott
100K subscribers congratulations! Very interesting series, and the castle itself. Thank you for sharing!
I think you done a very, very good job in cutting out all the pieces and fitted them together and matching the stain. HOWEVER!!!!!
I am really surprised that you used flat sawin some people call it cathedral sawin cut rather than rift cut sawing piece of oak lumber. Rift cut would have matched the older part of the scroll work, much better in my opinion. Granted. Most people don't know the difference between the cuts of wood and what part of the log they came from, but for those of us that do this sticks out like a
sore thumb. I'm not the expert you are, but I have been doing woodworking for around fifty one years
Absolutely fantastic restoration. Your attention to detail and patience are amazing. Much more than “Fixing Furniture “
Great restoration, Scott! Your patience, woodworking and finishing skills are second to none.
Loved the tour through the castle and the music that accompanied it.
Can you tell me who the composer was perchance?
Yes. The music is Josef Suk, Serenade, Op 6 - A Far Cry. Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for being a subscriber! Scott
Impressive work! I couldn't do it, but I would love to work with you and learn from you. You must be an artist for this kind of work.
The castle is beautiful.

Thank you so much 😀

I'm glad you enjoyed the tour and appreciate the details in the Castle. I was really excited for viewers like you to enjoy what I was able to see in person. Cheers. Scott 🇨🇦
Great job you really should look into the Festool ro90 sander. The difference between the Dewalt one you’re currently using and the Festool ro90 is night and day. I had been using Dewalt for 20+ years and then I tried festool and was blown away. Festool is expensive but very well worth it. Stop in a Lee Valley and try one you won’t be disappointed.
A cracking job! If the new castors weren't hidden by the wooden cups could you use some shellac/ stain to tone down the new and shiny metal?
I sometimes use heat to age metal, but that wouldn't work near rubber. If they were visible, I would have chosen different castor wheels. I hope that helps. Scott
