- We need to think out of the box and not remain trapped inside by sabotaging your metabolism with the consumption of high carbs on and off the bike.
How can a non-essential macronutrient taken in volumes we have never seen before via ultra processed sources not only increase performance but be healthy for you?
Has cycling and endurance sport lost its way with the consumption of all these ultra processed foods. With @RobertKennedyJr promoting a healthier way of life via the #MAHA movement by encouraging processed foods to be ultimately removed off the shelves in American supermarkets and reduce the amounts of carbs and processed sugar consumption in the USA.
Then surely sports should be a beacon of light for those who want to obtain fitness and health. Is cycling moving in the wrong direction?

100% with you. Last weekend in a club ride of 105km (average speed 28 to 30kph) we are miles away from pro. In fact I am pretty much in zone 2 for 80% of the ride. I am 53years old, 184cm tall and still way just over 100Kg so no lightweight. Been carnivore just over a year. I took 2 x 750ml bottles for the ride with a pinch of Celtic salt in each. A couple of the riders had back pockets full of gels, banana and jelly sweets. At 60km we stop at a service station for a comfort break and these guys rush into the store to replenish stocks??????????? None of them lean by the way. Its ridiculous

Having been keto for 15 months now, I've also studied much of the research surrounding low-carb diets and am realising that there is so much more to this than most people conceive. We have been basically lied to and misled for decades about what is a healthy and appropriate diet for humans to eat. As you rightly state Sean, carbohydrates are a non-essential macro-nutrient but because we have been brainwashed for so long, this fact just doesn't compute for most people.
The other problem is that people have been raised from children to eat this way so to break the habits and tastes we have developed over a lifetime is extremely difficult, if not near impossible for some. Even if you buy into the whole low-carb approach, it is very difficult to switch your diet around 180 degrees.
I count myself as extremely lucky that at 68 years old and having cycled seriously for over 40 years and consumed a ton of carbs over that time, I never developed diabetes or any serious metabolic illness. Just genetically lucky I guess but in October 2023 I decided to go "cold turkey" keto and never looked back.
After the usual few weeks adaptation my performance started to return and by Spring 2024 I was riding 100 miles just on water with electrolytes and coffee. I could also do high intensity interval training sessions without any loss of performance and needing no carbs.
As you say, people really need to think about their health first and not worry about their athketic performance because this can return and as I have found, can even iimprove in some respects. Indeed, if like me endurance is your main goal then I am convinced that a low-carb approach trumps high-carb hands down.
We are not professional athletes and do not share any of the attributes that they do especially youth which as we know can forgive a multitude of physical sins. They can get away with stressing and abusing their bodies in the quest for performance for a relatively short professional career. No-one unfortunately can hope to replicate that in the long-term into middle and old age without severe metabolic consequences.
@ashleyhouse9690 well done on your journey away from the high CHO diet. Thank you so much for your wonderful input and sharing your thoughts regarding this subject. Have a great weekend
I am so glad you put this video out. So many so called cycling “influencers” promoting ultra high carb and sugar during rides and it’s insane. I’m by no means a pro but this is NOT the answer.
Sadly the carnivore diet is so opposite from what we’ve been brain fed for so long…people, especially athletes are hesitant to give it a shot.
I’ve raced for years on sugar and carbs and recently raced on LMNT and bacon and had far better results.
Give it a try folks. For performance and for overall longevity!
@@Dlp1776 thanks for your kind words and sharing your thoughts
