Ammachi Kottaram was constructed by Travancore Maharaja, Moolam Thirunal, sometime in the 19th-century. Nestled in the cool tea and coffee growing highlands, it was mainly used as a royal retreat for the wife of the Maharaja. Travancore royal titles were passed matrilineally, so brother and sister ruled as the Maharaja and Maharani.
Kuttikanam pine forest is an artificial pine forest spread over 100 acres. It is home to about 30 species of birds. The Forest and Wildlife Department has classified it as a buffer zone. A forest full of pine trees ranging in height from 15m to -45m is a sight to behold.
The major location for the movie Charlie was Peerumedu near Old Pambanar, which was referred to as Vattavada in the movie. It has been situated amidst the picturesque Ladram tea plantation. The old age home shown in ‘Charlie’ is actually a Govt LP school here.
An emerging tourist destination in the Idukki district, Amappara near Ramakkalmedu is an ideal spot for travellers looking for a dose of adventure in their trip. Two giant rocks lean on each other at the crest of the hill, and the overall structure resembles a tortoise, giving it the name Amappara (“tortoise rock”).
