Once again I have learned something new and anazing thanks to you. I had no idea Koshi-guruma and Kubi-nage were two separate and distinct throws. So all the time I thought I was doing a Koshi-guruma it was actually Kubi-nage I was performing. Kubi-nage has always been, for me, a randori/contest friendly alternative to Ogoshi. Several of my students (the ladies in particular) have enjoyed great success using a left-handed version off a right-hand grip. A grand and powerful throw indeed. If I might clarify: Koshi guruma involves rolling uke over my back with the arm around the neck? Therefore in a way it resembles Soto-makikomi? Can't wait to pra tice this throw. Domo arigato! 🥋🙏🙂
Thanks so much Jun! Riki sensei told us that the kihon-no-kata is with the arm around the neck, but any grip that accomplishes this wheeling motion would still be considered koshi-guruma. It's kubi-nage where the arm must be around the neck, from my understanding. Hope that helps!
@@danle3181there is the extra Go kyo wazas. That are recognized by Kodokan also. O soto otoshi, morte gari, kukichi taoshi, kibisu gaeshi, and others. Incluiding kubi Nague.
@@JIUJITSUMAN22 Kubi nage is more the fact of Kawaishi who somewhat tried to modify the Kodokan teaching method by not calling throws by their names but with something like first hip throw, second hip throw and so on or by modifying techniques and call them otherwise. Kubi nage is a Koshi guruma variation for the Kodokan, they don't really make the distinction. Shin Meisho no waza : Morote gari • Kuchiki taoshi • Kibisu gaeshi • Uchi mata sukashi • Daki âge • Tsubame gaeshi • Ko uchi gaeshi • O uchi gaeshi • O soto gaeshi • Harai goshi gaeshi • Uchi mata gaeshi • Hane goshi gaeshi • Kani basami • O soto makikomi • Kawazu Gake • Ippon seoi nage • Uchi mata makikomi • Sode tsurikomi goshi * • Harai makikomi * . See, there is NO kubi nage anywhere.
Now this is the kind of thing I've been looking for. So many judo videos are aimed at the sport version and the advice is situational or confusing, but I want to know how to do the baseline, "traditional" judo/jujutsu techniques correctly to understand why they are effective. It's easy to adjust aspects of your technique to fit your current situation if you understand how it works and what you are trying to achieve by doing it.
Interesting video. Before I saw this here, I saw the Kodokan's Koshi - Guruma. Your Kubi-Nage is Kodokan 's Koshi-Guruma. That's confusing me a little. Especially for exams it's good to throw the "right" one.
Before Kodokan Judo, there was Kito Ryu Jujutsu and many other Jujutsu Ryuha. Names were sometimes different depending on ryuha. For Judo exams stick with Kodokan names, learn more about origins of waza.
Kubi nage is NOT a judo throw. It is not in the Gokyo. I don't understand why people continue to "teach" it in judo because when I see a kubi nage on video, it is often a koshi guruma. Remember that before the technique, there is the principle.
Kodokan do not make the difference between both throws. "Kubi nage" is simply considered a variation of Koshi guruma. So, there is no Kubi nage in the Kodokan.
This really is awesome content. It gets me really eager to go back to the mats everytime.

It's a specific throw, but depends on who you ask!
Kubi nage is NOT an official judo throw, it is not part of the Gokyo.
