Try to get to Cuzco at least 3 days before you hit the trail, this will allow your body to acclimatise to the altitude. There's a lot to do in and around Cuzco so you won't get bored. A day trip to Chinchero is a good option. It's a higher altitude than Cuzco so it helps with the acclimatisation. Now, this one is important; Get used to chewing coca leaves. They taste just like dry leaves, but you need a few turns at it to get used to it. cont..
Remember, coca leaves aren't narcotics. And believe me, chewing the leaves will make you breathe easier, deal with the physical demands more easily & will improve the overall experience. Especially on day 2. The hardest day of trekking. If you really can't stomach the leaves, take a thermos you can use for coca mate (tea). But chewing is best and you WILL be glad you did it. Especially when you see your fellow travelers struggling. Really struggling. You will love Peru and it's people. Have fun.

The Incas did not walk a trail to Machu Picchu. They rode in UFOs! :)
