My first visit to Paris was in August, and I had a fantastic time even with the frustration of local places being closed. I wouldn’t choose August for subsequent visits, but there’s never really a bad time to visit Paris. I think the biggest downside is that airfares and hotels are more expensive in July and August.
August is nice. Maybe late August is the best kept secret. It does feel different. Somehow quieter seems more intimate. Mid/late July was definitely crowded when I was there. May is nice but rainy January is a bit challenging. But, as the old classic song says, I love Paris winter, spring, summer and fall! Cheers
The first time I went to Paris was in early August. We knew about the vacation schedule, but decided it would be fine. And it turned out great! Some things were closed, but enough was open and we had a wonderful time. We were even able to get into the Louvre without a wait! And yes, the Louvre was quite warm inside! Some areas were a tiny bit cooler than others, but not much 😅
Thanks for your videos Jay. I appreciate that you reply to a lot of comments. I am visiting Paris with my girlfriend in August 21-27th. We are planning to visit Eiffel Tower area then stay a few nights in Marais. While finalizing our plans, we ran into some problems booking reservations at some of our top list restaurants and realized this “August closing” phenomenon. I had no idea. And as I researched it was confirmed. That led me to your video about this. Which triple-confirms it. We are disappointed and are thinking about paying hundreds of dollars to change our flights and come during the first or second week of September instead. I’m totally conflicted on what to do. We are concerned that the really great restaurants and small shops won’t be open and our experience will be ruined 😢. We can’t find “non-tourist restaurants” that look good to book dinner at. Will Marais be totally dead and boring? Are there any great restaurants you can recommend in August? Would like to know your thoughts….
Its funny i'am going to Paris in august and i'm gonna take a boat ride. And having champagne 🥂 for sure... for me, every month is a good month to go to Paris. just love it . ♥️🥂🍀🙋
I went to Paris last August and it was awesome, there were plenty of things open, though it seemed like certain neighborhoods were entirely closed and others were pretty open.
I'm already planning to be in Paris in August, so this was just what I needed. I'm going to the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo first, and since that's only in August, I didn't have a choice. There's also Paris Plages, which is only in summer. I'm looking forward to seeing that. I didn't think about the A/C issue. Thanks for the heads up. I'm not keen on so many shops being closed, but as long as L'Eclair de Genie is open, I'll be OK.
Visited for the first time mid August 2022 and seemed like any other European city in August. Looking back now, a few restaurants we tried to visit were closed. Enjoyed our time and would recommend going in August. Main sites were all open. Was hoping to run into Jay on the trip but didn't realize how big Paris actually is.
Good point about the French fear of moving air. It drives me mad 😂 Get a cool breeze at home or a friend's house on a hot day and someone will insist the window is closed "otherwise everyone's going to get sick" 🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha! They say that in Mexico, too! “¡Te va a dar un aire!”…”You’re going to catch an air!”…. I lived in Mexico…and…there may be something to that!! I stay out of air-conditioning, too, LOL! 🌬️
My wife and I were in Paris & Colmar a week ago, tried out some French sayings per J Swan, had great food, drank the wine, saw our first protest, and had a glorious time. We were treated so well that we’re dying to come back sooner rather than later.
I’ve found September is also a good time to visit Paris and Europe in general…fewer tourists from the US and also Europe since a lot of people are generally not on vacation then and have returned to school and work
tbf Jay's 'sneaky sandwich' video has great ideas for lunch on a budget (he also went to Bouillon Chartier in his classic French dining vid. which is a good tip)
I don't think he SHOULD do anything, but if you want to pay less money in Paris, think about the things that are free. The many parks for example. If you will get your food in a supermarket it won't cost as much. We like to buy bread, cheeses, some fruit and a bottle of wine and just sit next to the river of Canal and have a picnic. You can go to the parks, they have chairs, bring your lunch or drinks with you and enjoy people watching. Monuments you can look at and don't need to get a ticket to (like the tower, the arc, etc), or take the city bus tour that will show you many things for a reasonable price. If you buy a city pass then you can get your public transportation and museum entrance for a lower price as well. There are many affordable places to eat as well, you just need to stay away from the crowded areas, look for Plat de jour (that's the more affordable dish). Things like that. And above all- travelling is a privilege.
I just have to say that I can't help but notice your new additions to your wardrobe. Lookin' good in the hood (as they say). On August in Paris---there are some advantages. The small museums (think Rodin) are less crowded than usual. For restaurants that are open, a lot of tourists, especially Americans, tend to eat at earlier hours. If you eat later the restaurants are less crowded because locals are en vacances. If you are also in Paris for the first week or 2 of September you can contrast "empty" Paris & post La Rentree Paris.
Thank you for sharing info about the musée Caravalet. I don't think I will need A/C at the end of September but it looks like an interesting place to visit.
A much needed video. With that being said, I found it more difficult visiting mid summer. Simply for the fact that you will walk a lot, that’s with metro/subway included. It wore me down quite a bit and I exercise frequently lol. I’ll be back in autumn. 😂
Is it safe to visit right now? I have booked my hotel for the first weekend in August and I don’t know if it’s a good idea with the riots. Traveling with small children.
So far so good - they're mostly out in the suburbs. I haven't personally seen any riots or even protests this week. I did see one South American parade though.
I visited for Bastille last year in July and Paris was already kind of shutting down for the holiday. Some shops around the 10th and whatnot were shut but everything in the centre was open anyway. Lots of bars, hipster cafes, cocktail bars were opena nd not so busy too. Great time to visit imo
Great video! A bit scary watching you in the middle of a busy street! I'm coming to Paris this year at the end of October, assuming it will be cool and less tourists.
I was there for 5 days and left yesterday. My sole purpose was to attend Mylene Farmer's concerts at Stade de France... they were canceled 2 hours before start time. I've spend so much money on plane tickets, hotel and concert tickets. I'm devastated and hugely disappointed. That was my fourth visit to Paris.. it becomes WORSE with each visit.
Very sorry to hear this, but your travel insurance will reimburse you (at least). The concert cancellation was a huge overreaction by the police/town hall.
😬😑 Unrest - fires - shootings - grief - fury . . . hmm yeahhh not heading to Paris anytime soon thanks. Keep safe Jay. Fun edit Mr. Jay -- that classic boat and pro photog shots is the bomdigity.... absolutely people should get hooked up with such.
It's a good idea to check in on opening hours, but you'll probably be fine! Most businesses really start their vacations in August, though some smaller restaurants and shops might close a little early.

Estimates say 25% of hotel bookings cancelled and a taxi driver told me that last weekend was 'dead' in terms of tourists. That said I can still see plenty of tourists. Looks as if the problems in the suburbs have been quickly calmed.
The conflict between Jay and Versailles will never end😂

I have picked my bone 😆

May and September remain my overall favorites - but I need to do a recap on how much of a party June is.
I agree with you 100%. I was there in August, too, and had a great time.

Yes Paris is definitely different in August but it’s such a fantastic city that there’ll still be loads to see and do. Some great tips there Jay. 🙏
Thank you Andy!

We are coming for 5 nights the last week of August. Only time we could come and not been since 1989. Been brushing up my awful French....
Hope you have a blast!
You should do a 'paris on a budget' video. Showing us cheap ways to eat and staying in cheapISH accommodation
but (almost) nothing in Paris is cheap

It'll be bustling, probably, because that's la rentrée, or "the return" (back to school/work)
Yay! Bonjour Janelle and Amy! Omg. Cracking me up. 😂
love it Jay and I love Paris!!!
Thanks!
M going to Paris for short work trip on August 10. In the late stage of Paris Olympics. Hope it won’t be too crowded.
