It's one major thing that i always loved about the NiGHTS community. During the many years that the IP remains dormant, the fans step up and keep it active on their own. The fans have truly kept NiGHTS alive all these years.
I think the unused grinning faces of NiGHTS might have been for an unused idle animation where she would start making faces at the player if you leave her hovering for a bit like how Sonic will tap his foot

I mean, i'm mostly just having fun with that silly Gillwing evolution theory. The connections are a stretch but i thought they were interesting to mention. If it ever turns out to be true though i'll be VERY surprised, lol. But i'm not banking on it.
I'd been thinking of making a NiGHTS into Dreams iceberg for fun, but with how much we're learning recently, it would feel incomplete in no time.
You can start filling it out with stuff we already know, leaving room and not posting it until the miners have laid literally everything bare from these builds.

I'd say give the datamine a few more months to let them dig further, just in case anything else crazy pops up, and then go from there. I mean, i'm trying to document the findings as best as i can but every time i start writing a script another bunch of discoveries happen, lol. Sometimes, newer discoveries provide answers for older discoveries, which then requires rewriting and organising entire parts of one section. Maybe work on an iceberg slowly, keep track of the datamines updates, and when it looks like the dig has finished you can commit to making a full-scale iceberg. That's my advice, anyway.

THEORY TIME
What if Elliot and Clarice both had their own version of Selph? The more Jester-like emblem would correspond to Elliot, but the unknown emblem seems vaguely feminine with the curling parts.
12:27 The emblem on the door looks like a Nightopian, the teardrop head, body and the wings. I wonder if there was originally plans to make an area for Nightopians but due to limitations at the time it was scrapped. The team went on to make the Chao island in Sonic adventure 2 which is pretty similar to the concept, Nights JOD lends to that theory because there's a door that takes the player to the Nightopian garden, similar to the Chao's so it all went full circle.
I was hoping you'd say something like "there's no way we're going to find Selph" so that in two weeks you'd be forced to post a video talking about how you found Selph.

1º Stage: The cats that Bomamba uses in her battles
2º Stage: That early design of Clawz where he was a round red cat
3º Stage: Clawz
4:00 that hat is probably from beta NiGHTS design. NiGHTS probably would’ve been a live based game before getting scrapped, which makes sense due to its arcade like nature.

I love watching the discord server finding new things, we've sure have gone a long way from this whole datamine, glad to see NiGHTS getting some attention thanks to this hopefully we can find more lost things and for me personally I must see if the crazy bastards find Selph, can't wait for your next vid!

It would be shockingly epic if you are fortunate enough to score a real physical GBA handheld and the NIDSA GBA Mini Game, which would absolutely render my emulator advice useless lmfao!

Those emblems/heads at the end definitely interest me... The one with the curved "horns" definitely resemble Reala, but it also resembles the "More NiGHTS" icon from the official NiGHTS into dreams website. The other one doesn't look like anything out of NiGHTS, but does somewhat resemble Lumina Flowlight from Sonic Shuffle (though it's missing the "bumps" on the sides of her head). Given that Lumina already has a very NiGHTs-like design (and the fact she gets replaced with NiGHTS if the date is set to 24/12) it makes me wonder if the character design for whatever that second head was from was shelved and eventually used for Sonic Shuffle
Yes DiGi what a video!! Enjoyed this at 3am after getting a new HS on Christmas NiGHTS. It’s such an exciting time right now, I’m watching the Discord in absolute wonder at the skill and discoveries from everyone involved. Cannot wait for your video on Selph. Keep up the top work geezer

Honestly the entire Blue Door segment made me think "This is the only fandom that can focus on parts of a door while datamining this hard and still have me captivated"
Maybe it's just my vision screwing with me, so you're welcome to mark this off as nonsense. But when the camera's spinning around Elliot at about 13:57-13:58, the light blue part of the door starts to turn from light blue to pink before going off screen. If it is tied to the house, maybe it was programmed to slowly turn orange after certain goals are met?

Regarding the objects you call "the doors", have you notice that the old Ideya Capture is right between those objects? Maybe the Ideya Capture appears from those doors or something like that, such as, doing some task to make it spawn or something? Just a theroy of course.

I personally think that Dragon/Poison would be better suited for Gillwing, mainly because of the spikes in his tail. But Psychic is an interesting choice too, given that he is a dragon from the Dream World.

@@ikagura Its already canon that NiGHTS is a Nightmaren, even a cutscene in Helen's story in NJoD clearly stated that NiGHTS is a Nightmaren.
The specific cutscene where Reala reveals NiGHTS being a nightmaren though he did twist some of the truth since Reala never mentioned that NiGHTS rebelled against Wizeman though, whether he knows it or not at all.

If both of those emblems belong to Selph, I can see the second set of emblems to be Selph with a hood upon his head. If he does have horns like Nights and Reala, it may be a bit of a stretch to say it's a hood, but I just thought it would be interesting to say.
It could be possible the hood is horns shaped facing down and curved while having a third horn or gem on the head. It kinda looks a bit Egyptian and feminine.
My personal theory about the emblems was that they where meant for some kind of two player feature, that aloud you to race with your friends. One would be meant for whoever was playing Elliot and the other Clarice, that way the players wouldn't get confused by having two NiGHTS flying around the stage. The reason they appear in the collectable item data could be that there were more options for 2 player mode and they where apart of an item collecting challenge.
They could have something to do with Selph, but if I had to guess, if the two player mode theory is correct, then Selph could have been some kind of Nightmaren Boss that reflected on the character that you played as. That would explain why the stripes are blue on one of them, that one would presumably belong to Elliot, resembling his blue hair. Perhaps in the 1 player campaign you had to also collect the emblems in hard to reach areas of the level, in order to unlock a boss fight with Selph. Or maybe it was like Sonic, where you needed a certain amount of items in order to enter a bonus level that Selph was the boss of.
This all could be disproven within less than a month though, I'm really excited to see people finally take a crack on NiGHTS code and Saturn games in general! It feels like a decades worth of advancements have been made within less than a year and I can't wait to see more! Keep up the good work! ^u^

Apologies in advance for adding to the conspiracy board but after considering the possible connection between "Crewle" and Gillwing take a look at the aesthetic similarities between Hollows and Puffy....

I wonder if Sonic Team removed the Nightmaren eggs due to finding some ways to explain Wizeman's role? Like if Wizeman did not create the Nightmarens due to the fact that they are natural born eggs that are organically reproduceable then that could very much undermine Wizeman's overall presence and involvement as the NIDs' main antagonist.
I personally was considering the Party enemy to "evolve" into Puffy. They don't like very similar, but it is mainly because Party is the only Third Level Nightmaren who has a fancy feminine design.
when i was a kid playing nights it was something that nobody knew about or appreciated. it makes me happy cry to see so much effort love and TIME being put into the conserving and exploring of this game!!!!!
20:06 Okay, I think I just had a massive epiphany regarding what these head icons were for. So a little bit ago I was looking at some old concept art for the game when a particular image caught my eye: It was an early design for Claris that bore a different hair style than what ended up being used. This hair style looks very much like the second icon with the curled horns. And that's when it hit me: I don't think these icons had anything to do with Selph. Rather, I believe these icons were supposed to be used for the level select. With 4 heads per child, each with a different color, they'd fit perfectly as stage icons.
Furthermore, other pieces of early concept art show NiGHTS with a single, whispy piece of hair growing out of their head. Combine this with the icons having what appear to be striped details on their horns, I think that, originally, NiGHTS was supposed to have different designs (at least for their head) depending on who they dualized with: The horned design we all know and love would be for Elliot, whereas the design with the curled horns would be for Claris.

Also, the unused collectible sprite that looks like NiGHTS’ hat kind of reminds me of the NiGHTS-esque hat in Billy Hatcher that lets you walk on top of eggs.

Maybe 'clear cut' was a poor choice of words on my part. Essentially, what i meant by it was that Sonic is considered to be a hero with attitude, but definitely a 'hero'. Sonic's entirely focused on saving others and is purely committed to his role as a hero. NiGHTS on the other hand isn't a hero at all but one of the 'enemies' who is so free-spirited and mischievous that they rebelled their role as a villain purely because they liked having their freedom. Sonic will save somebody for selfless reasons, where-as NiGHTS will help someone but tends to initially want something else in return (namely, freedom from their prison). But anyways, it was a poor choice of words and it didn't convey what i meant clearly. My bad.

If I made it sound like it was something more serious than it really is, that's my bad as well, I just thought I'd point it out since I wouldn't consider Sonic the same kind of hero as Mario for example, who tends to have very little characterization outside of his heroic deeds. Sonic is more nuanced, always following his own code and doesn't care which side is "right" in the end, choosing the side he's on for himself (although unfortunately, this aspect of his nature as a hero is all but forgotten about now.) I do think that it's really interesting how NiGHTS contrasts Sonic as a character, though, sharing many similarities but showing them in different ways. It's something I'll always respect about old Sonic Team's character design. It's a shame the way they've turned out now.

If I had to guess, the eggs were probably to show a hybrid pian had been created, and they were cut for memory reasons. Every byte of texture data counts on a console like the Saturn.

wild theory 06:34 is Selph. Right there there's unused face texture and unused model for a character that most likely looked the same as NiGHTS.
The thing on the door looks like a Nightopian. Maybe the door was to access a proto-Chao Garden / My Dream area instead of looking at Nightopians in a gallery menu?
I like the theory that just because of the narrow neck and pointy head on different parts of the door, the blue door was supposed to be the secret entrance to fight Self

Somehow Selph always fascinated me after reading about them from the wiki. The concept seemed interesting to me. I was inspired to make my interpretation of the character like some other fans.

12:40 Doesn’t the swirly pattern on the middle of the “door” kind of look like the hood thing from the unidentified emblem render? The one that they found with the Reala/NiGHT’S emblem render? Is it possible that the emblem render isn’t a character but a structure or that the door maybe has a connection to the character depicted in the emblem? Maybe a stretch but they both have a shiny rock thing in the middle of their “head” although that doesn’t mean much
Maybe the door was somehow connected to whatever character the emblem is depicting, before they and the door were scrapped? Definitely not Self but maybe another character that would maybe be an oracle or something not affiliated with a boss fight

This is cool but I always get an irrational fear/discomfort with seeing datamined assests like t posing or weird messed up areas. Like seeing a weird texture
What I wonder is, given how much we're finding and learning, not just about NiGHTS but also about Saturn games in general, what that could mean going forward. Like, could all this potentially lead to cracking the Saturn open fully so its weird secrets are fully revealed? Might it be possible using this data to somehow create tools to not only mod these games with new content, but also potentially create homebrew Saturn games?
Maybe I'm thinking too grandly here, but maybe the Saturn's true time to shine is yet to come.
Well, there is currently a SEGA Saturn homebrew scene, and fans have been developing games for the console for a while now. I know PandaMonium done a video on some Saturn homebrew titles a year or so ago, so check that out. In regards to NiGHTS' own reverse-engineering, this could be the beginning of the modding scene. We might see full publicly released model editors, or custom map editors, or maybe even full-scale fan games. If progress like this continues then who knows what the community will eventually be capable of. Honestly, it's a GREAT time to be a fan of the Saturn right now.
Here is my crazy theory after watching all these vids. The one thing I've seen that looks like the boss emblem for Self is whats on the blue door. The head shape appears to line up.

OKAY EVERYONE! it is now time for magnazero's wild randon theory speculation spectaculars supreme! not this is all shots in the dark and I'm only going on my archival memory of casually playing this game as a kid and collecting every issue of the nights into dreams archie comics and frome my experience from studding those comics from cover to cover for several years. Now hear me out on this but what I think those two heads are in fact... (dramatic pause here) are in fact Both proto-type heads of the boss known as selph and here is what I wish to show as my speculation: now nothing is known of what selph is or how the boss fight would have been like but now consider this! what if selph was a boss that had two different versions of itself depending on weather eliot or claris were fighting "it". now think of this If selph was a boss fight what if selph was a mirror powered up version of a kind of "shadow nights boss fight" where the character model would show a seamless fusion of nights/eliot and nights/clairis. like imagine this if fighting self as clairis you fight a male selph that was a more masculine looking nights that looks simial to the evil fairy from the sonic shuffle game and as elliot you would fight a fiesty female nights that resembled the good female fairy helper from sonic shuffle and further more to even that what if the style and assets used on sonic shuffle were heavily using ideas and dropped concepts from sonic shuffle hense why sonic shuffle always felt like to me to use the nights into dreams aesthetic without and sight of context or reference... this might be something to consider and I ABSOLUTELY felt commelled to share this line of thinking with you and this may help solve some mysteries about trails of possible connections to finding out more about who and or what selph might have actually ended up being used in sonic shuffle for the dreamcast and no one but me has ever pondered such things. one last thing to point out as well just because said possible characters may not have any connection or reference to "selph" in name or file names what if that was intentionally in the devolpers minds to do that so as to steer away anyone from making this kind of discovery at all? think on it please and I would truly love to see my wild outlandish theory might even hold water and be the puzzle piece you were hoping for all along so please bring this up to whoever you think might be able to shine much needed light on this mystery. and thank you for reading this long convoluted comment. happy hunting!
With the team already having this much on their plates with 3 versions of the game, I can only hope that once things slow down they don't forget about the 2 other versions also produced on the Sega Saturn (that I know of): the Nights Sampler and, of course, the infamous Christmas Nights. And that's not even touching upon different region releases. They've certainly got their work cut out for them. Keep it up!
The amount of unused content shows how much there was gonna be in this game. I had no idea there was this much hiding in the game. The lore is deep and vase within this game.
My headcannon form for Sleph has always been that Seliph has no physical form and just copies other characters. But I am 100% READY to see Seliph~~
Has panzer dragoon been data mined? And panzer dragoon saga? Also I assume the sharp tooth nights model is used for a "cutscene" with reala wearing a fake head and costume of nights to scare the kids.
For some of this more confusing stuff, it might be good to straight up ask Naka and Ohshima themselves. Naka's very active on twitter and even liked a tweet I @ed him in asking if he was keeping up with the datamine. I just hope they actually remember everything, it HAS been nearly 30 years...
This has been suggested to do several times already, but the datamining team decided that we should ask the developers only after we dig out every possible unused thing from the game
@@KetrinDarkDragon I agree on this 1, because I do remember watching some the cancelled Sonic Xtreme Game via TH-cam documentary and history videos about 1 of the programmers using the NIDS Saturn Game code for 1 of the Sonic Xtreme test build before and Yuji Naka who at the time was never tasked by SEGA for him and Sonic Team to create a SEGA Saturn Development Kit was furious at the said programmers for using it without permission ( supposedly due to the programmer not knowing that NIDS SEGA Saturn game code has some tight kind of copyright type of claim from Yuji Naka ).
In short, yes we should be careful and a bit concerned as to how would Yuji Naka would react if he ever expressed it negatively which could unfortunately 1 of the worst case scenerios.

Yeah that's one of the hints in the game. In my opinion, the model used in that picture seems to be the same wide head model that the teeth use.
