Been to Lulworth of Holiday several times. Stupidly i never take a wet suit with me so i end up going in for a snorkel without. With all the kelp thought i would have seen more fish lurking around. One of my favorite locations for a snorkel in the UK.
Lulworths great isnt it. I've never swam without a wetsuit though! Stair Hole would be good for that though I imagine or man o war cove as it's shallow to begin with. Yeah this dive wasn't the fishiest.. In May last year it was much clearer and saw more fish. Still an awesome spot though, going to explore it some more soon
@@OceanicMatt May has generally the time i have been down there. Lived for a few Years around Yeovil/Templcombe area so could get down there easily, that was in the mid 90s. Amazing area of the UK to live in with Cornwall and Devon not too far away.
It was! Awesome for just messing around as teenagers along the cliffs and quarries! Used to love exploring all of the sea caves down at the bill too! Good times!
never seen your videos before lovely footage, constructive tip regarding spooking the bass, your head movements are very fast and erratic will be spooking fish that have seen you before you have seen them, might help
Nice vlog matt, might i suggest a much slower approach, when you duck dive down go into slow motion mode, if you sink down just sit there and dont move a muscle, let the fish come to you, no jerky head, arm, or spear movement at all. Its totally psychological, slow it all down, be the background....
Thanks mate, appreciate it.. I'm definitely going to be working on my speed and general movement next season! A lot of my dives this year were short and somewhat rushed so that didn't help my technique much 😂 Next year will be better🤙
Are you happy with your wooden speargun? They seem well balanced in the water and have little recoil. I have considered getting one myself. Nice vid. Slightly spooked fish out that day. Luckily you got a pollock in the end😊
Hey mate! I love my wooden gun, I built it from scratch, trigger mech and all.. I have only ever used this gun though so I have nothing to compare it to 😂 But that being said, it's great to shoot and It's buoyancy in the water is awesome, neutral with the shaft loaded and positive when it's been shot! Thanks! glad you enjoyed it! Yeah this spot is becoming a bit of a nemesis spot for me! Glad I got something but I was getting desperate 😂 Hopefully I can get more out of this area this year!!
@@OceanicMatt Nice. I see many people building their own speargun on various sites I follow. It will be enough to buy one in the store for me in the first instance. But it sure is great fun to build your own too. Maybe in the future.
@@Spearfishing_joh Woodies are really expensive aren't they if you buy them online, definitely much more rewarding to make one yourself too. Took me about 6 months on and off though! Worth it in the end..
@@OceanicMatt Yes. the ones I've looked at cost quite a lot. Agree that there is a charm of its own in making your own woodie. no doubt about it. Definitely great fun.
This particular spot wasn't very fishy on this day! The UK is very different to other areas like the tropics though. Helps if you find the right spots though!!
Oh right I biggan to Spearfishing when I used to leave in Cuba and I was thinking to starting again but here is a big diferente. Starting from how dark is the sea water here and the lack of fish
You should try starting again, I find that even though the conditions are different and it's colder, it's very rewarding when you do land something! There were a few times I went to this spot in early summer where the conditions were much cleaner and brighter.. more fish too.. Cornwall is also a good place to go!
Ah ok, well if you don't know, there is a freediving group called apneists UK near you. Might be worth a look! Imagine there would be a few spearos there, guessing North Wales would be the closest place to spear that's good too
Fish has no chance .. how can a person miss from close range ... i dont see the fun or sport in it .. & ive done hunting & fishimg in my time... & No catch & release with a big hole in the fish :-/@@OceanicMatt
@@hvidhavn1 You'd be surprised, I've had my fair share of misses too and I don't always come back with fish. True but spearfishing isn't about catch and release. It's deliberate and selective. I pick the fish I want to eat - and shoot it. But you also have to find the fish, not spook them, get close enough etc and not miss. So the fish does have opportunities to escape.. That being said, spearfishing gets a bad reputation sometimes and isn't for everyone, so I respect your opinion.

Funny that, I used to live in Portland years ago. I do miss it tbh

You didn’t see all those fish spooking away? They don’t just sit there waiting to be shot!
@@hvidhavn1 i’m guessing you’ve never speared. maybe try it
