Why is there importance placed on birds bathing. Jamie speaks of introducing birds to a daily shower. Do birds get dirty?

    • @rudebird1705
      @rudebird1705 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@helensemrau7442 They have to bathe because it helps control their powder down and prevents them from getting too itchy. It also helps keep their respiratory systems healthier due to the powder down. It can also reduce feather destructive behaviors in some. They are a high-humidity species. It natural-- in the wild they get rained on and wet from dew in trees etc. You don't use soap or anything (do not put anything in the water)...you don't spray them in the face and you don't put them to bed wet etc. You do have to watch them though because mine will dunk her head and get water in her nares (in a problematic way)!
They also do collect whatever is in the air in the environment. An umbrella owner should already have a variety of ozone-free air purifiers with non-UV settings, but the stuff in the air gets on their feathers...so does whatever is on your hands.

I’ve had my Cockatoo (Name is Heaven) since she was 8 weeks old! I hand fed her until she was a year old. She’s almost 2 now. They are known to be a cuddlier. She loves cuddles! I myself have done research on them prior to getting her and still do and I will say she is amazing. Never has bit anyone. You raise them the way you want them to be. Now, she can get loud when she doesn’t have your attention but I always make sure she is included in every meal we have! She goes everywhere with my husband and I. If I’m washing dishes, she helps! Folding laundry, she helps! Big tip: Include them in what your doing they’re like 2 year olds. Wouldn’t trade her for anything! So glad I got her at a very young age so I could discipline her the proper way! She’s definitely loves both me and her dad! Since you work with other parrots, you got this! :-)

And because of what you just said and watching other good bird owners I know 100% I should never own a bird. Not even an "easy" bungie. I really like them.. I'd like to visit them if I had a friend owner.. but I'm so totally confident I would not make a good bird owner. Let alone a cockatoo. It's so sad people buy these birds before knowing what they are getting into. Please don't unless you are willing to do what Wendy just wrote above.. This bird will become YOUR ENTIER LIFE. 24x7. You really ready for that?

I have a 29 yr. old U2. Best advice...don't let him get scared. You can tell the excited over stimulation but fear happens much faster. I've only been bite twice. Once when one of the macaws took off flying and once when he got his toe caught in the cage and was hanging upside down. I tried to help him and he held on to my thumb for dear life. If he gets over stimulated, let him get the energy out but back up and let him do it by himself. Keep the environment calm. Good luck! U2s are my favorite bird. ❤️

As a fellow U2 mom, I agree!! You can also tell them over and over, "it's ok" and explain what's going on and why they don't have to be sacred. That's what I do with mine.

I have six moluccan cockatoos. Each one is a individual with a distinct personality. One female that I've had for 25 years has never nipped at me once. Two other females that I've had for a similar length of time sometimes pinch me if I'm not giving them my undivided attention when their sitting on me. It's important to note though that it's a pinch and not a bite. The three males that I have can be a bit unpredictable but over the last 25 years I found that you can redirect their attention and it doesn't take very long to calm them down.

  • @Domefossil

Exactly! They are really great birds. You can see the hyper over stimulization coming. I have always worked with these birds in a quiet place away from anything scary, like other birds, pets, and usually people. I calm mine by petting the head smoothing the crest down. I trained over 22 cockatoos and have two U2's and one rule is never show fear. U2 especially pickup on fear very quickly and use it to their advantage. I remember when harness training my female U2 Baby last owners couldn't and stated they tried for years and she would just bite them. I harness trained in in one day, yes she lunged and would hiss and click but over a few hours kept trying and called her bluff and once she allow it pass over her head rest was easy. She next day associate it with going outside and actually helped me put it on by lifting wing and lower head to put it on her.
They know how to intimate you and manipulate you they are literally that smart. Yes you have to be careful and watch body language but at same time be firm when training. Cockatoos especially U2's are very smart and train better then most birds trained over the years. They pickup very quickly and adapt quick.
They don't train the same like most birds as they can't be bribe easily with treats as most birds you can and know how to manipulate the situation in their favor?

For Blizzard's sake, I hope you will consider bringing in an umbrella cockie that eats the proper diet and bathes like a bird to eat with him, bathe with him and generally spend time with him. Species' mates can work wonders with "pets" who have learned bad behaviors from people. Sometimes it's quicker and less painful for the trainer. I hope for his life and health you succeed!

I understand Cockatoos I understand the fear, my Cockatoo used to be so lovable the hormones hit and sudden stink eye looks a bloody painful attacks. Their moods change on a dime. So I chose to use the bird’s intelligence where I tell him to get in his cage, before I enter. He listens, so now I can still talk to him, and give him attention. I’m safe, and fully aware that he could trick me, into “come here, give me a kiss, just for him too say it’s ok after biting me. Not giving up, trying to give him a good life, he is so damn smart. I love having full conversations with him. Just don’t want him too attack me, cuz it hurts! I keep trying too learn thru many knowledgeable bird trainers, like Bird tricks, and others too help me be more aware. I think it’s essential if u are a bird owner

After seeing you guys with Blizz I'd love to see you guys with my umbrella. She's similar in many ways (stuck on zupreem, drops anything you offer her, minimal interest in training, hard to find rewards, etc) but where she differs is she doesn't get heightened and over the edge like many cockatoos. She's actually fairly hard to get amped up at all. She just gets hormonal but in a cuddly way where she just hunkers down and pants like a dog 😶
I think she'd be the first umbrella Jamie would fall in love with 😉

Deleting my prior question because duh, just watch the vid. Good on you for helping out a cockatoo. I just foster failed the umbrella cockatoo that invaded our home in October, so I'll be very interested to see your progress with Blizz so I can get ideas for my girl. She's a plucker at this point but her feathers are starting to come back in and I'm hopeful that she'll eventually have enough to fly.
Also, my girl is scared of spray bottles but I got her your aloe spray and she seems to enjoy that now.

Jamie I have the perfect umbrella for you to get over your ?fear?. She's sweet as can be to literally everyone. Honestly she's so sweet I think she was dropped on her head when she was an egg, and she's hard to trigger. Perfect bird 😂

P.S. I'd love to see how Bliz does because I have the same problems with my umbrella. My sulphur crested would steal the food out of my mouth if he could and likes showering with me so no problems there. (that one is a sweetie pie as well to everyone - I got super lucky)

I have had cockatoos for about 35 years. They are very emotionally astute, and THEY choose their person. If you truly love
birds, it hurts your feelings to be rejected by a bird you thought would be your lifelong companion. Things to consider:
Blizz is at reproductive age, and we are currently in one of their breeding cycles (I don't breed them, but my experience is that U2s have 2 cycles/year). Many of his behaviors look like courtship displays. "Hey, look ay me! Don't you want to get to know me better? I want to get to know you." He offers quieter sweet talk for the person to whom he is instinctively attracted, which apparently isn't the female owner. It looks like he has several crest feathers begging to be preened, and I wonder why tbey aren't. With their mate or favored person, cockatoos put their heads down, inviting, almost begging to be preened. U2s and M2s are very langorous, sensuous, and tactile oriented. To earn their absolute trust and affection is a heartmelting gift. Because they want to be with you, preened, and loved on by you, they are often called Velcro birds. If you and a bird don't click, he may tolerate you for a while, but will eventually engage in aggressive ("go away!") behaviors.
Food: My adopted U2 eats all kinds of nuts in the shell, but rejects pellets or just grinds them to powder. So I pulverize Zupreem natural in a blender, and make a warm mush, which she has for at least breakfast and often dinner. I also mix the pellet powder with pulverized Kwiko Egg Food, and Harrison's organic Power Treats and mix that in with organic almond butter, which is a good source of vitamin A. She gets that in little foraging shapes. That way I ensure she gets the pellet nutrition. I still put pellets in one of her food bowls, in hope!
U2s love to bounce., and that gives them strong legs. Get Blizz a Boing for his cardiac health. And it's great entertainment for you.
Remember, the BIRD CHOOSES you! I had one that rejected me, but liked 2 of my male friends, so I eventually gave her to one of them. She adored him and became a very cheerful, cuddly bird with him.

Yeah... Mine are rescued. One chose me, the other chose my daughter's. That's fine. I got him to get him away from a horrible situation, not so he could Stoke my ego. Didn't think he would ever be compliant- but he's done pretty well!

I really think an Umbrella Cockatoo is an awesome bird for only certain people. God, mine helped me through some very depressing times while going through a lot of physical pain. Maybe they need people like that to bring them calm and joy to each other. God I miss mine so much.
