    The late greats Gene Wood & Rayburn, and Johnny Olsen; along with the music and lights were my happy place in my sad 😭 childhood.📺

    I got to see Rod and Rich warm up the audience for TPIR. Rod asked us how many people had been to a taping of a TV show before. Less than half of the audience raised their hands. Rod then said "I see we have a studio full of virgins here today!"

    At the closing we could even hear Johnny Olson saying "THIS IS JOHNNY OLSON SPEAKING FOR THE MATCH GAME-HOLLYWOOD SQUARES HOUR, A MARK GOODSON TELEVISION PRODUCTION!" so it could cut off by the end.

    I think Johnny was "slowing down" a bit in the last year of his life. Here he is, a guy in his mid 70s, and he's running around the audience getting them excited during warmups. It was not at all lack of enthusiasm, it was just being tired.

    If they really wanted this to succeed, Peter Marshall should have done the Hollywood Squares part.

    • @akampfer
      @akampfer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you read the book "The Matchless Gene Rayburn", Marshall should have been involved. The book said Marshall owned a piece of Hollywood Squares from the original run. He was shopping a revival and was going to partner with Century Towers Productions who owned most of the show. He was a little naive however and signed his share of the show over to them on a promise they would keep him as a partner, instead they through him over for Goodson to produce.

    He had been announcing since 1946. He was the most popular announcer for nearly 40 years. I believe he was on radio before then. His voice always sounded the same, so you knew it was Johnny O even without having to hear him say his name at the end of a show! I bet if he was still alive, he's still be announcing!

    At 1:14, Charles looks sooooo bored. 😑
    I remember seeing this show as a kid and being impressed by the graphics, the enormous set and mostly remembered the part where they reveal the multiplier for the Super Match jackpot.
    Interesting experiment, to say the least. Might have done better as a weekly series or summer series in order to attract bigger names.

      Never mind, I can see that this episode will be airing on Monday night on Buzzr. Here's the pattern, March 7, 1984 also had Erin Moran for the Match Game portion and Bob Eubanks for the Hollywood Squares portion, and Johnny Olson is once again filling-in, I believe the daytime Family Feud is getting ready to tape the Grand Old Opry vs. Soap Opry week when these episodes were taped so once again, this week had 2 announcers.

  • @smpage09

    I think this was a great show, and not a too far fetched idea. A Rayburn/Marshall pairing would've been more ideal. Bauman is not as horrible as a lot of people made him out to be, clearly they lacked chemistry, but I think Bauman did a fair job as a match game panelist (not as the host of HS). Also, even though its an hour long show, the HS portion seemed so rush. Loved the set, but it looked just too expansive especially during the MG segment. Its like they were in outer space or something.

    • @akampfer
      @akampfer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The book "The Matchless Gene Rayburn" said this idea started because Peter Marshall was trying to reboot Hollywood Squares. At the time, he owned a piece of the show from the years he hosted it and was looking for a partner. He made a deal with Orion Productions and trusted them a little too much and ended up signing away his piece of the show. Orion teamed with Goodson and it went from there.

      Just my opinion, but Jon was a terrible host. I saw many episodes of this series when it first aired, and didn't care for it because of Jon and the booking of D-list 'celebrities'. Gene seemed embarrassed to be there, but did the best he could do with what he was given.

    • @whatdidoursurveysay
      @whatdidoursurveysay 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MGHS was a better idea than execution. Done right it could make for an awesome show. But between Bauman being picked over Marshall, the lackluster celebrity guests and Mark Goodson absolutely refusing to do Hollywood Squares like Hollywood Squares, the series as-aired was doomed from the start.

    The show was underrated!. This would have sparkled if Peter Marshall hosted the HS segment. The theme is my all time fav, too. The set what pretty advanced for mid 80's considering technology for the time. Gene Wood, Johnny O, all great announcers and there are none currently who have honed their craft to their perfection. FYI: Notice the camera work in the star entrances - very well done tracking "moving targets" - you rarely see shots like that one shows today! Thanks for posting this clip.

      @@DBR00 To be fair, this version of HS was terrible because they were multiple choice answers and all the humor was taken out because they had to fit both games in with time left over for the super match. MG got top billing and pretty much all remaining time (about 20 minutes) was left to HS.
