OMG this is beyond awesome. Johnny Olson was a HUGE part of my childhood as well as Bob Barker. I was so sad when Johnny passed away. There will never ever be another announcer like him.. Thank you for posting this rare gem!!
For those who don't know this, current announcer Rich Fields attended a taping of the show in 1978 (when he was 18), and asked Johnny O how he could get his job. Johnny then let Rich say "Come on down!" into his mic. Little did young Mr. Fields know that it would be part of his job some 25 years later. Ironic, isn't it?
*Only* Johnny could be so casual with the audience, yet so professional when the cameras are rolling. It's a cold day in hell when you hear Johnny mess up while the show's rolling...truly a legendary announcer of many decades.
Thanks for posting this. Johnny O was always my favorite announcer and it's great to get to hear a warm-up, which I think was an important function of announcers that the general public overlooked.
Johnny was the best. To have the energy he had at that age, and maintaining such a hectic schedule. Traveling back and forth between LA and NY to announce game shows, then jetting off to Miami to announce The Jackie Gleason Show. In my office, I have a personally autographed pic that Johnny gave me. You're gone but not forgotten, Johnny Olson!
Also, traveling back-and-forth on weekends from Los Angeles to West Virginia to spend time with his wife of 46 years Penelope Olson. I never thought in my wildest dreams that he was a great singer. There is a video on TH-cam titled kids and Company May 24, 1952 that he host. And, he sings this song titled that’s America to me. I have to say that his voice was splendid.
Boy, I would have loved to have been able to attend a taping of TPIR with Johnny Olsen being the announcer. He sounds very lively indeed! RIP, Johnny Olsen!
I was also lucky enough to see Johnny Olsen in New York during the 1960s-early 1970s. Johnny was not only real, but he was colorful and a real class act. I also had the privilege of interviewing Johnny for a class project in a college mass culture course. It would be great if a full version of this warm-up were available.
@bluebear1985 Legend has it that @ that very taping, Mr. Olson gave Rich Fields some advice: "Don't get Barker mad.". How cool it must've been for Rich to have met his idol! Johnny Olson was definitely one of a kind! Johnny is missed to this very day. He was a broadcasting legend, for sure! R.I.P., Johnny Olson...1910-1985.
It's 2024, I'm 25 years old, but I always prefer to watch the Old Price Is Right with Bob Barker, RIP (1923-2023), with my younger bro, because there's no school like the old school, Drew is good too, but Bob Barker is Legendary, Him and Johnny Olson were the greatest game show tag team, Bob Barker, best Price Is Right Host, Johnny Olson, best Price Is Right announcer.
Johnny Olson, Rod Roddy & George Gray are the Price Is Right announcers who have stayed in their jobs for at least 13 years (13 for Olson, 17 for Roddy & 13 for Gray) 🎉. Come on Down
Jay was so important to breathing new life into TPIR. He worked 24/7 for months in early 1972 with Mark Goodson and Frank Wayne to remake the show. He also did the audience interviews ("worked the line") and had a knack for picking great contestants.
I heard that they didn't even film a pilot for it. They got it sold to CBS by having a pitch film shot about how it would be updated for the 70s, hosted by Dennis James and Mark Goodson.
Everything Johnny says for the contestants not to do is exactly what contestants now a day on the Drew Carey version does. Johnny we need you! They obviously aren't prepping today's contestants properly prior to the show start. Some will spend 30 seconds looking to the audience to price some soup or cookies and still get it wrong. I mean really? Why were you picked if you are having that much trouble with a simple item such as that? Bob was the best at dealing with those who delayed. Drew just stares at them blankly waiting.
Every time I watch an episode of Price, I unashamedly do the same tagline along with the announcer whether it's Johnny,Rod,Rich Fields or even George Gray. The contestants' names not so much.I even yell A NEW CAR.
Johnny would take a lap around studio 33, do some wild dances and end up in the lap of the first middle-aged woman he could find. It always riled the crowd up.
The Goodson Todman game shows Johnny Olson announced: Play Your Hunch The (original) Match Game I've Got A Secret What's My Line? To Tell The Truth The (new) Price Is Right Match Game ('73,'74,'75,'76,'77,'78,'79,'80,81,'82 and "Match Game PM") Now You See It Tattletales (and its 1969-70 prototype,"He Said,She Said') Mindreaders
Both Johnnie, Rod, and Rich was awesome on the price is right. I don't really care for George Gray. As much as I like Drew Carrie, he is not that great to me on the price is right. I really miss Bob Barker. Are IP to the announcers that we lost. It seems like the only announcer that we have left right now is Johnny Gilbert of jeopardy.
@TerryT1976 I cerainly wouldn't attend a live taping of TPIR today, but I would, however, love to be present and walking around the CBS Television City building because of so much history that was made on TV got filmed in there.
How did you manage to do this? Amazing! Well anyway, I went to see a taping of the Price is Right three years later (1978) and Johnny Olsen warmed up the audience. I remember them laying the song Disco Inferno by the Trammps in the studio just to get us warmed up.
@yolichka1 Which clown announcer are you referring to? I'm not sure if they have picked a permanent announcer yet, but Drew Carey is getting better as host.
TO ANNCR. MIKE:>> Don't forget Gene Wood, Randy West and Burton Richardson!! ;) Also Charlie O'Donnell, Johnny Gilbert and Charlie Tuna... Jack Clark too! ~JK~ ~JK~
1:56, Johnny almost said the "P" word, LOL. I bet he had something to drink that day. I don't blame him though LOL, he was in the moment entertaining the audience, RIP Johnny Olson (1910-1985), greatest game show announcer for "The Price Is Right", Rod Roddy, RIP (1937-2003), comes a close second, but Johnny will always be # 1 in my book.
Rich...that's the current announcer, right? Don't have much time to watch Price is Right nowadays, but if that's him, he doesn't hold a candle to the likes of Olsen or Rod Roddy.
i know it sounds bad but watching Rich's warm-up made me realize he sounds kinda fake to me...i like Johnny's better cos he just sounds so genuine and stuff, whereas Rich's enthusiasm sounds weird and almost forced. Meh.

bluebear1985 how you know
Markas Flood are you that stupid?
@@TheJpep2424 Don't call le boi stupid.
Rod Roddy had Johnny Olson show him how to do it and learned well.
I was in the audience in August 2004 and Rich told that same story in the audience warm-up.
I started watching game show network in the late 90s when I was a kid so I feel I grew up with Johnny Olson he was definitely the best
The deaths of Johnny Olson and Bob Barker left a big hole in The Price Is Right.
True.
You ain’t lying. It’s not the same without him, Bob, or even Rod Roddy.
*Only* Johnny could be so casual with the audience, yet so professional when the cameras are rolling. It's a cold day in hell when you hear Johnny mess up while the show's rolling...truly a legendary announcer of many decades.
Johnny was a true entertainer. He was the perfect announcer for TPIR.
Thanks for posting this. Johnny O was always my favorite announcer and it's great to get to hear a warm-up, which I think was an important function of announcers that the general public overlooked.
Even though Rod Roddy was my favorite TPIR announcer, Johnny Olsen was definitely a legend himself. Even Rod could not compare to him.
Johnny was the best. To have the energy he had at that age, and maintaining such a hectic schedule. I’m too young for Johnny’s day’s but hearing the warm ups is inspiring
One of the all time greats, Johnny Olson!
Boy, I would have loved to have been able to attend a taping of TPIR with Johnny Olsen being the announcer. He sounds very lively indeed! RIP, Johnny Olsen!

Johnny's got a real good sense of humor, I'm not even kidding!
"You'll All be lit....get lit......." CLASSIC! I think he was a little lit that night.
Johnny O(Olson) was THE GREATEST announcer. He is SURELY missed but, not forgotten.
Johnny Olson is so funny!
I'm sure Johnny would be proud. I actually want to announce for that show as well one day! That would be cool! A blind game show announcer!
here are my faverite announcers Johnny Olson,
Rod Roddy, and Rich Fields.
There's no announcing voice that sounds better than Johnny Olson's!
I LOVE Johnny Olsen but he sounds DRUNK! I love it!!
Johnny Olson...the best in the business.
Johnny was a huge ball of energy! Always sounded like he had a great time doing TPIR,among other shows.
November 21, 1975
Tv, music, fashion....perfect. 😀💕
I hope the full version of this warmup is out there somewhere.
Yeah, I've got the feelin', Johnny.
Johnny Olson, Rod Roddy & George Gray are the Price Is Right announcers who have stayed in their jobs for at least 13 years (13 for Olson, 17 for Roddy & 13 for Gray) 🎉. Come on Down
At 3:12..."Janet Himmelfartsen!" LOL
Wow. XD
0:52 RIP Jay Wolpert 1942-2022
Jay was so important to breathing new life into TPIR. He worked 24/7 for months in early 1972 with Mark Goodson and Frank Wayne to remake the show. He also did the audience interviews ("worked the line") and had a knack for picking great contestants.
Now Bob Barker is reunited with both Johnny Olson and Rod Roddy. May all three gentlemen rest in peace.
Lots of euthusiasm!
For the nighttime syndicated version.
Johnny's drunk.
Also Jack Narz, Rod Roddy, Charlie O'Donnell, Rich Jeffries, & Bob Hilton
They are the greatest game show announcers ever!
I heard that they didn't even film a pilot for it. They got it sold to CBS by having a pitch film shot about how it would be updated for the 70s, hosted by Dennis James and Mark Goodson.

I mean really? Why were you picked if you are having that much trouble with a simple item such as that? Bob was the best at dealing with those who delayed. Drew just stares at them blankly waiting.
Bob Barker and Gene Rayburn had a great announcer in Johnny Olson! Almost like a brotherhood of sorts.
Every time I watch an episode of Price, I unashamedly do the same tagline along with the announcer whether it's Johnny,Rod,Rich Fields or even George Gray. The contestants' names not so much.I even yell A NEW CAR.
He's probably catching his breath from running around. I've heard he did that in many of his warmups.
Johnny would take a lap around studio 33, do some wild dances and end up in the lap of the first middle-aged woman he could find. It always riled the crowd up.
The Goodson Todman game shows Johnny Olson announced:
Play Your Hunch
The (original) Match Game
I've Got A Secret

To Tell The Truth
The (new) Price Is Right
Match Game ('73,'74,'75,'76,'77,'78,'79,'80,81,'82 and "Match Game PM")
Now You See It

Armory Brunot,Jr. Don’t forget Double Dare and the pilot episode of Family Feud.
And the syndicated Concentration with Jack Narz 1973-78.
Both Johnnie, Rod, and Rich was awesome on the price is right. I don't really care for George Gray. As much as I like Drew Carrie, he is not that great to me on the price is right. My hats off to you. You captured Johnny (Olson) in the best way possible. Now, how about the rest of the audio?
Upload the full warmup

I think there is a video of a Johnny O warmup somewhere also. Cuz I sent Randy an email about it and he said it has been around for years
Is there any way you can post the whole 15 minute warm up?
I think it might have been a fur episode…
1:56 Johnny Olson How Could You!!!!
Very cool to hear this. Johnny was pretty entertaining before the show, definitely better than Rich.
lol at 3:12: "Janet Hymofartson!"
Johnny Olsen had the same accent as Mitch Hedberg.
@143AC A fact that's little known by so-called TPIR devotees.
Do you still have the whole warm up?
wow how did you get this ?
@bluebear1985 He'll ALWAYS be good!
Janet Himmelfartzen.,😂😂😂
@yolichka1 Which clown announcer are you referring to? I'm not sure if they have picked a permanent announcer yet, but Drew Carey is getting better as host.
@bluebear1985 Very good, and Rich deswerved it. Not that clown that up's there today. And that includes the host too !!!
What's this from the very first permanent hour long TPIR?
This is shortly after the show went to 1 hour in November 1975.
Is Greco fingers still part of the price is right
No Kathy retired somewhere around 2010
TO ANNCR. MIKE:>> Don't forget Gene Wood, Randy West and Burton Richardson!! ;)

Their was the greatest game show announcers on national TV!
1:56, Johnny almost said the "P" word, LOL. I bet he had something to drink that day. One thing I don't get... I read somewhere that it's supposedly a no-no to chew gum on-camera... why is that?
because it's unattractive; and on TV, you'll look like a cow
Panning your what?
I told a joke once.
I don't want to be mean, but Johnny sounds kinda drunk. Or, is it just me that thinks that?
@Angie2343 I don't like it any more than you do. He was good on the show while he lasted though.
Is Johnny plastered?
I don't know, but at least Bob had his Ovaltine.
johnny o would be driven crazy by the contesants today 90% of them need the audences help for the smalest thing
i know it sounds bad but watching Rich's warm-up made me realize he sounds kinda fake to me...i like Johnny's better cos he just sounds so genuine and stuff, whereas Rich's enthusiasm sounds weird and almost forced. Meh.
