This song was written because the Critics and Haters in Mexico were calling The Warning Malinchista which is a word that mean that they are Traitor to their Mexican Culture because they only sang in English so in this song The Warning are telling those People to Shut Up because they don't know anything.

    *Fun Facts:*
Durning Dany's guitar solo. Pau broke a stick. Just before Pau started resuming her singing. You can tell by Pau's silhouette. She was reaching for another stick.
*Narcisista* song is a polite middle finger to the Mexico critics. Who have stated The Warning are ashamed of their heritage since they released only songs in English. This song quieted those critics. *Martirio* have proven those critics wrong.
There's a Mexico/Spanish slang word in the song. It's *Malichista* which means a person who is ashamed of their heritage.
There are a few *Narcisista* English videos on the TH-cam.
    *Other Topic:*
The jam group Phish. The guitarist & bass players did jump on those small singular trampolines while playing live. That was back in the 2000's when they started.

That song was created for various haters since they were labeled as narcissists and malichists, which is a Mexican word used to refer to someone who doesn't love their country, something like that, that's why they wrote that song on Na na na ra na na na, it's like when you You cover your ears and start to sing so as not to hear others. That's the reference of that song, that's why it's very good and catchy.

I scanned through the comments and only saw one other mention of it, but seriously, you guy would LOVE to see this song done with a guest drummer so Pau can come up front. As you might suspect, she is a natural frontwoman too, and she prances around like she owns the stage. It is a joy to see. I'll check in the morning. If someone hasn't posted the link, I'll find it. You need to see it, doctor's orders!!

I think it's a reference to the press criticizing them for just writing their songs in English and not in Spanish. In short it was saying "screw you" we'll write the way we want to but they said it's very difficult to write their songs in Spanish because there are so many syllables and words compare to English. That guitar is a custom made " Rick Toone" guitar which she has two. A black one and the one she's playing. They have an aluminum neck which is removable so she can use them as a carry-on for plane trips.

There is literally an interview where they are asked "why do they sing in English" and "don't they think that they would have more success already if they sang in Spanish". Maybe now there is more of a positive consensus about them, but they had a few pointed questions earlier in their career.

    • @Nxort

      @@cissyiniguez
That is not a criticism from the press. That's what they ask to all the mexican bands that sing in English, because none of them are successful and they disappear after a few years.
And they are right, in Mexico and Latin America they would have been more successful years ago if they sang in Spanish.
The Warning is probably the first mexican band in English that you have heard, and it's not because they were the first, but because they are the only ones that have managed to succeed.

To this day they (TW) go a bit harder onstage when they play this song.
It really resonates with Spanish speaking audiences but is well received by English speakers as well, as many have learned the song at least phonetically.
Lately TW have been playing their 2 Spanish language songs back to back in their set list (Martirio being the other).
Martirio is best described as a cross between a rock anthem and a power ballad. It’s absolutely beautiful. It’s a song I’d recommend to watch the live performance and the OMV to catch the full effect of the song.
If the ladies weren’t so classy, they could have included other certain hand gestures directed at the critics…lol

I don't know what to do anymore
I don't see the point of pretending

    Because I already know
That behind the curtains they keep talking
Their good intentions always come out lacking
Don't believe that you're fooling me with that disguise

From what I understand, the first one she had was loaned to her by Rick Toone and she used it in the studio and on tour in 2017-2018, I believe. I could be wrong, so please, someone with better knowledge of it, please correct me. Then it was signed by the band and Rick Toone sold it for nearly $20,000. I think she got another 2 since, if she indeed still has the original or another Swamp Ash sunburst version (I thought she only had the one), including the white one (Moby Dick). She also used a Rick Toone Conquistador and another 22 fret Rick Toone guitar in the studio recording "Error". Very Sadly, we have not seen her Rick Toone guitars since she became a PRS artist. I personally think the Rick Toone guitars sound better and are better suited to "The Warning sound".

In any translated lyrics you look at, you will find one untranslated word: Malinchista. This is a key word in the song. If you run a search on it, you will find it is an insult term specific to Mexico and nowhere else. It is based on the name of a native Nahua woman, La Malinche, who contributed to the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire -- look up her Wikipedia entry if you want to know more. It is a term used against cultural traitors who prefer foreign ways over that of Mexico. Similar to calling someone "unamerican", only moreso. Critics called The Warning malinchistas for writing and performing songs in English. Needless to say, they were more than a little angry about this, as Pau makes abundantly clear in this performance.

The guitar riff where you were hearing the bass doubling the guitar is actually an effects patch that Dany is using where it is playing the lower octave as well as paying the natural note, which makes it sound really full. Add to that Ale's bass and you get a nice fat bottom groove.

Thanks Chris & Sam! Great reaction! The Mexican history comment probably refers to the word "malinchista". If you Google translate it will tell you it means "melancholy" but that's not how Pau is using it in this song. She's referring to La Malinche who was a local Nahua woman in the early 1500's who actually worked for the Spanish conquistador Cortés thus helping a foreign army to conquer the Aztec Empire. Today Mexicans use it (usually derogatively) to refer to someone who values a foreign culture over their own, which some critics have accused The Warning of, since up to this song they always sang in English. Very clever lyrics indeed!

This was the last show of their tour opening for Halestorm, and the last two shows Arejay Hale came out to play drums on this song and allow Pau to go out front on the stage. I think it speaks very highly of TW when members of the headlining band want to join the support band on stage. In their next tour supporting Three Days Grace not only did they invite Dany on stage to sing with them on Painkiller, Barry joined them for a few shows to play guitar on Choke and let Dany run around stage more freely. Great reaction video. I do appreciate your insights as musicians into The Warning's sound. And it's cool that your opinions are informed by experience. TW definitely have a sound all of their own, thanks for explaining what makes it so.
Quick history lesson. (No claims as to this being definitive or even particularly accurate.) But other people have mentioned the origin of the name Malichista. The reason the Aztec Empire was overthrown by a few hundred Spainards armed with only marginally better than mediaval technology, was that the subjects of the Aztec Empire rose up against it the first chance they got. The Conquistardors were, even by the standards of the time, a bunch of bastards, but the Aztec Empire was built on slavery and human sacrifice. History and a county's cultural identity can be messy subjects.
Anyway thanks for the vid, bust of luck to Offset Era!

Well, seems the rest of the gang here gave a pretty good explanation of what this song is about, so I'll work on some of the others details.. I dunno if anyone else mentioned it, but they showed the lyrics to their Mom, and she laughed because the context was off quite a bit, so she helped them rewrite it a bit, so it made more sense in Spanish, which is kind of funny, since they SPEAK Spanish! Narcisista (Nar-si-sees-ta) is a real ear-worm of a song, even if you *don't* speak Spanish, and is definitely a crowd favorite! It was kind of hilarious that when they did this in Madrid, Spain, I'm sure they were probably holding their breath a bit, about how the crowd would react, considering the early Spanish conquistadors were the invading army at that time.😮 Yet, the crowd took the humor in stride, and the reaction was just over the top!!😂
The whole Madrid concert was over the top, and it was like one big sing-along from start to finish! They knew every word of every song The Warning did, and weren't afraid to sing along! This may be a good one for an extended reaction some time, and there are several good fan videos out there to pick from.😄 Thanks you guys for starting my day off right with another great review!😍♬♬ 🤘😎🤘

Yes, there are two guitars playing on this, and many of The Warning's songs as they make no secret to using backing tracks when necessary. That is no secret and it is a Captain Obvious moment on your part. Ale' played a 4 string bass from the beginning up until 2020. Since this performance was from 2019 it is a given that she was on one of the 2 Spector Euro-4 basses that were gifted to her by a fellow bassist. It was around mid-2020 when she was first seen using a 5 string on the song Dull Knives (cut better). She was then presented a custom built (to her specifications) Spector bass from Spector US later in 2020 as a new (and youngest) member of the Spector family. Dany's guitar in this performance is a Rick Tune design with the unique head stock and tapered fret pattern.

    Why was La Malinche important?
    La Malinche - Wikipedia
1500 - c. 1529), more popularly known as La Malinche [la maˈlintʃe], a Nahua woman from the Mexican Gulf Coast, became known for contributing to the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire (1519-1521), by acting as an interpreter, advisor, and intermediary for the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés. Malinchista is an insult meaning culture traitor

    English translation:
They say they have to pray for me
So worried but I do not see
That they are praying so much
    It's not for much
    Quit your judging already
    Stay away from me
    Please!
    Criticize me a little more
I find myself entertained to hear
    Everything you say
    All your badmouthing
Let me laugh a little more
    Because you don't know anything
You run your mouth and don't shut up
    I cover my ears and
    I simply say
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na na
    Let me refute the list
I'm not crazy or a malinchista
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na na
    They say I am selfish
    Condemned narcisist
I don't know what to do anymore
I don't see the point of pretending
    I'm not trying any more
    Because I already know
That behind the curtains they keep talking
Their good intentions always come out lacking
Don't believe that you're fooling me with that disguise
    Because you don't know anything
You run your mouth and don't shut up
    I cover my ears and
    I simply say
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na na
    Let me refute list
I'm not crazy or a malinchista
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na na
    They say I am selfish
    Condemned narcisist
    I'll refute the list again
I'm not crazy or a malinchista
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na na
    They say I am selfish
    Condemned narcisist
    From Genius:
Narcisista. A scathing rebuke of their Mexican critics that had accused the band of being “Malinchista” a Mexican term used to call out cultural traitors, because the group has only recorded English language songs. Well this song is in Spanish and it is full of attitude and angst fired toward those critics. The song was released in June of 2019 and performed live for the first time in Monterrey Mx at the Foro Didi and has become a show staple ever since. The reception of the song in Mexico, Central and South America has been overwelmingly positive as with non Spanish speaking regions around the world.

Watch this version, where Pau's teacher Beto Ramos sat in for Pau, letting her front the band. Sound isn't as good, since this is a fan vid, but it's so much fun: th-cam.com/video/fhVeToCXX_4/w-d-xo.html. They've done this before; Arejay Hale sat in for Pau last fall a few times when they were touring together, and their guitar tech, Cachi (who's actually a drummer, but he understands guitars very well), also did a few months ago: th-cam.com/video/-fet1xP_3Fw/w-d-xo.html
As others have discussed, this is a diss song. It isn't the only one they've written. Animosity was about a falling out of a friendship with Pau, allegedly because she declined a sleepover party with some friends because they were playing the next day; the following school day, the erstwhile friend said that the band would never amount to anything. Unmendable is allegedly about a problem with a recording label, and I believe Fade Away was about people dismissing Pau. The sneering, mocking tone of this song is evident in the "na na na na na na na na", but the guitar tone is very expressive in that regard also. Dany is a true master of that aspect of electric guitar playing.

    I’ll give you the chorus:
    because you don’t know anything,
run your mouth(essentially) and you don’t shut up or stop (basically saying you keep running your mouth and never seize to stop) I just cover my ears and Simply say let me recite the list (now their saying everything they say about them that their not ) I’m not insane nor a malincista (hard to translate essentially cultural washed like white washed sorta but more so like you perfer america and English over your own culture essentially but it’s a Mexican term specifically ) it’s a slang term so it’s very difficult to translate(y’all can help in the comments please I have friends from mexico but im italiana)
You say that I am egotistic condemned (I guess best translation like I’ve been condemned) a narcissist.

A kind soul has put subtitles for those of us who don't speak Spanish. This explains Pau's single handed theatrics during certain verses of the song. Narcisista, the word, has the feminine aspect to it with the suffix "ista". A man would be a narcisist.
    th-cam.com/video/6Ay4RqhQB0I/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=RandomMusic%40TheWarning
How many 16 year olds have the courage to stand up to her critics with an acerbic riposte like Narcisista instead of cowering down? Fed up with constant criticism for singing in English, Pau came up with this angry retort. Her mother asked the girls to tone it down when they showed the 1st draft for grammar check.
That is why Pau is saying "No soy loca na Malinchista" or "Neither am I mad nor Malinchista". And herein comes the history part that one commentator had talked about earlier. Malinchista is a Mexican term for a traitor, a cultural turncoat who prefers alien culture to own roots. Malinche was an Aztec / Nahua woman who got friendly with the Spanish invaders & facilitated the conquest of Mexico. A treacherous soul to some.
Ah, the delicious irony of time when a packed house in Madrid sang these same lines with Pau a few weeks earlier. The conquered have become the conqueror now!!!
