So much fun especially if you can get something closer to 14” assuming your country allows it legally. Super popular length up here in Canada where overall length of 26” is required by law but 14” or 14.5” is the most popular for this kind of gun. I had an 8.5” Dagger pump assist magazine gun in 12ga but I sold it since I kept thinking I was gonna send my fingers down range with a load of buckshot. I think I own 3 or 4 shortie 12ga guns around 14” and it’s just about right for fun and fishing but other then home defence, (not legal here, kinda) or coyote blasting if they enter the fence-line around livestock it’s kinda dumb to have anything under about 20-28” barrel; other then fun of course. For fun strap on a side saddle, a light and a red dot and have at it, (not for me but my son loves it). Hell mount a bayonet and a fore grip and really got mall ninja, (you will be judged but what do you care you are having fun, what do I know I own two 500 Magnum pistols so I can’t judge). 😳

John-Paul Silke gotta have an 18 inch barrel on a shotgun in the states. Unless it's something like a mossberg shock wave or Remington tac-14 with that type of grip

There's nothing wrong with your introduction. Your channel, because of your nature, is friendly in tone and nicely presented as always. I'm happy to be called a "friend" even if it is just online. Great video, once again, as always. We get to see such nice and interesting things that as far as I know no other channels really cover. There are too many explosions and dramatic scenes in so many gun channels and yours is a calm and collected gem among them.
Edit to add - I've gladly subscribed to your Patreon as channels need all the encouragement and support possible in the face of anti-shooting sports YT.

Hi Mike. I used to shot a Baikal over and under that a friend of mine owned,it had 27 inch barrels if I remember rightly. It was no Holland & Holland, but it was a delight to shoot and I would recommend one to anyone who wants a no frills gun that does the job.

I'm in the UK and intend on getting a shotgun license next year. I would happily purchase a baikal. My cousin in Ireland had one for the last 15 years and it's given no trouble whatsoever. I've fired it a good few times myself. Nothing fancy but built to last in my opinion

    Another delightful video!
I've got a pretty neat story about a 1950's~ Baikal IJ24E over under I purchased awhile ago. Brand new, Unfired. Still in the original packing from the factory in the USSR. Story goes someone purchased it way back when, and stuck it down in between a wall from the attic. Someone was doing renovations and found quite a gem. Unfortunately there was some mouse piss on the stock that marred the finish in a few spots. I picked it up for $350. What a steal. A new IJ24E is around $850 cdn. Made out like a bandit on that one. Quite a few differences between the new an old. The old ones were hand checkered, hand engraved, and had double triggers. The new ones have machined checkering and engraving and a single trigger.

What a great story! Absolutely fantastic that you got that gun! And you are correct - those older models are gentler on the eyes and still tough as tanks. Thanks for writing.

This video helped me pick which sbs was right for me, and how to spot a few of the characteristics that make up a good quality double. Baikal search brought me here. There aren’t many videos on them
As for your introduction and instructional presentation, I feel very comfortable in saying that many new shooters in the contemporary firearms community (and even those seemingly more interested in the run and gun spray and pray 3gun jamborees) are very hungry for your kind of instructional and informative platform. Don’t change a thing.

If you don't appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of a double barrel, there is something wrong with your soul.

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns
      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Those doubles - I guess if one could only have one gun a strong case could be made for a 12 Ga. double. Eventually even the best pumps and semis fail and doubles can shoot loose - but a few hammer taps or a little work on the hinge pin and one is back in business. Just a thought : )

Isog, You may not know that before Browning offered the BSS affordable shotgun, it's predacessor was being made in Japan by the man who founded the Mirocho (sp?) Gun manufactiring company. The Browning /Winchester people saw the "B C Myluck" shotgun and so admired it that they contracted with it's maker to manufacture the gun under their Browning name ! And so the Briwning BSS shotgun was born, and the grew into many old Winchester designed guns being made by this same Japanese company .
I was fortunate enough to find and purchase the uncommon original BC Myluck model, a 6.5 pound 12 ga. Beauty that has wonderful balance and fitting for me .

In the seventies I literally wore out two Spanish doubles. I had a gunsmith who repaired them for me. each time I got them back the trigger pull was tougher. He even case hardened the parts for me. Finally he told me I needed to find a new home for them. I asked him why they wore out so quickly and he replied that the cheaper Spanish guns were hand fitted with soft steel parts to facilitate quick assembly at the factory. The better grades such as AYA were made with better steel, subsequently more durable. The cheaper guns were beautiful with color case hardened frames and they were light and easy to carry. I asked him which side by side he would buy for quality and durability. His response; Browning BSS. I took his advice and bought a twenty gauge BSS Sporter with the English straight grip. After firing thousands of rounds over thirty years I've never had a problem. Three years ago I took the stock off to refinish it and looked inside. There was virtually no sign of wear. Recently I was in a fancy "Gun Library" where they had some new beautiful Spanish doubles for $1400.00. They had a gently used BSS for $1,100.00.

I have a traditional English 12 bore side by side, boxlock ejector made by John Tisdell of Chichester, it's ~100 years old. When you handle a gun like this and look a little closer you realise the skill and time that went in to making it. Intricate engraving and the way the parts fit together so precisely is impressive. I was interested in buying a side by side and looked at several. When I shouldered this particular gun it stood out from the others as it happened to fit me very well.

You have the best gun Channel on TH-cam and are the most liked as well.Nice personality and great firearms, that seem to be a cut above the quality of the other lower grade guns we see on TH-cam. You have encouraged me to seek out and buy fine firearms, instead of the cheap, junky plastic ones that are so popular right now.I now buy top grade Swedish and German Shotguns ,instead of plastic stocked, soft steeled ,Turkish ones. You have taught us how to see the difference, and now we are going to recycle our plastic instead of shoot with it.

Can't miss with a BSS : ) ...why they stopped making them...no one knows. I still don't follow why SXS shotguns are not the most popular. O/U maybe a little easier to hit with but with experience the SXS is just as good - especially in the field. The repeaters are great but that's a lot of parts and complexity for one extra water fowling shot. Of course - for defense the repeaters are another story.

I've owned and shot doubles since I was a teen but never knew why chopper lump barrels were so named. I'd venture to say that one of the major reasons why we all find British guns, especially older ones, so much more pleasant to shoot is that their stocks always have more drop at heel and comb. They are more anatomically suitable to the human body than the very straight stocks on modern factory-made guns. The gun should fit the shooter, not vice versa.

Just picked up a old sxs bsa I believe 1950 12g 2 3/4 chamber, nice proof marks etc, nitro proofed, and a pedersoli sxs percussion cap, oddly should been a 20 gauge but it's. 700 all the way down the tubes uses 14 gauge wads and cards, very odd, takes a. 690 round ball with a
.015 patch. I love the options you get with a smooth bore,

My gunsmith here in the UK recently mentioned Baikal shotguns in conversation, saying the internal components are very well finished and crucially, properly case hardened. His opinion was that if you see beyond the snobbery, they are very well made and good value guns. As an aside, Beretta use the monoblock method of barrel construction and nobody criticises Berettas!

I love double guns and have owned some real decent guns in my time. Even my craptastic polymer OU “tacticool” 12ga I use for fishing near the Alaskan boarder just “feels” better. Since it’s a fishing gun tossed on the beach I bought cheap and reliable but people who have never handled and shot a double really have no idea how one can cost $6,000-$20,000 and be worth every penny. (You obviously can get much more expensive but really it’s like wine and a $6,000 gun has so little difference from a $20,000 or more gun that we are talking 2-3% better at this point other then decorative flourishing).

Hello Gold One - your words are gold to me. I'm doing my level best for all to see what it is that we are interested in - that all the good gun people around the world are just that : good and abiding people, most with families and full of love and faith of many kinds; care and dedication for their community and country; and most of all, a steadfast belief in the sanctity of freedom. I've received messages from places where there is little or no freedom and for sure - they don't like it and in a heartbeat would be like us at any cost. Freedom does not come without risk and consequence - but the alternative is not life - but rather a form of incarceration in the name of security.
I'm so glad you bought a Safari! What a rifle! What a legend. I hope this polymer age will pass and we can return to the types of guns and beliefs that got us here. And yes - the oils, gold and silvers are the way to go - at least for me. Thank you for writing and all the best to you.

"Socialism is not in the least what it pretends to be. It is not the pioneer of a better and finer world, but the spoiler of what thousands of years of civilization have created. It does not build, it destroys. For destruction is the essence of it. It produces nothing, it only consumes what the social order based on private ownership in the means of production has created."

I just redone the stock dark red stain and tung oil and the barrel and receiver i used spray paint in flat black and done 3 layers. The gun looks very awsome now . The shotgun was sitting in a barn for 50 years and my bro bought it for 250. It shoots far and we used #2 shells and we were hitting our targets at 100 yards away. Oh yeah its chambered for 2 3/4 but thats ok.

In other words, they're all functional, quality guns, but one is like a luxury car.
This was a very interesting video. An old double barrel is definitely on my list of things I'd like to pick up one day. I have a couple older guns, and a couple newer ones, but the old ones are so attractive to me. It's just a matter of justifying the expense for something I don't need.
Oh, and your introduction? People on here just like to complain. Don't worry about it.

Hi Jim, Good point - we all struggle with need and want. I guess cave and fire is need so most everything else is probably want : ) I think you deserve a few guns - like everyone else; and they don't go down in value - like cash in the bank. Just my humble opinion.

    • @jimf1964
      @jimf1964 5 ปีที่แล้ว

USOG Absolutely right. The beauty of buying a really nice old gun, is the beauty of the gun, but the bonus is it keeps becoming more valuable with time.....unlike a few new gun purchases I've made.😥
I'll be picking up a few things down the road. I'm just at the start of getting out of some long and difficult times. That's why I was very appreciative of this video. I never knew about bushed firing pins, or about the barrels. If I get a shot at an older gun, I'll know a lot more about what to look for. I can spot quality work in wood and metal, but this is some valuable advice. Especially if I find something really quality built, but in rough shape.
Thanks for sharing your collections and knowledge.

I have a Browning BSS which was the first shotgun I brought back around the early 1980s. I had just got into waterfowl hunting at that time. I really did not know much about shotgun at that time, but liked the looks of the tradition old waterfowl guns. I went into a gun shop and saw this gun which looked almost new with no ware. I think i paid $300 at that time. I used that gun for trap shooting and waterfowling for a number of years until steel shot became mandatory for waterfowl. At which time I brought a Browning pump that could handle the steel shot. I still have the BSS. Still in great shape. What do you think this gun is worth today? I don't believe it is made today, but maybe I'm wrong. At one time I thought of having the screw chocks put into the barrels so I could shot steel shot or see if there was a replacement barrel that was made for that gun but never did. It still a beautiful gun. Interested in your thoughts. Thanks.

Hi capthal - depending on condition and exact model - I see the Brownings change hands for between $1200 and $2500. Sideplate models are more. Upland models are scarce. I bought one for $1400. with some evidence of use but still about 80-90% Hope this helps. Sometimes people panic about something and let them go for cheap - like $800. - but that is the exception. Hope this helps.

Have loved the BSS for years now. Have used one for a long time on many sporting clay ranges even though several much more highly prized O&U guns are readily at hand and could be used if desired, its the BSS that usually get put to work. There’s just something about a SxS that I love, and the BSS has long been my fav. Therefore, the more highly prized pieces remain put away, and its the good old BSS which usually gets put to work on clays and various field work. I’m convinced it’s pretty much indestructible and it fits me as well as other fitted pieces which cost far more.

From my experience is an extremely durable shotgun with excellent steel and the springs don't break - or mine never did. I would say the Baikal box lock will last as long as any box lock can. I can't say they are better or worse than a British gun in terms of durability - which is saying a lot.

The moroku DBBL gun costs about 5000$ in India with average condition
Baikel arms shotgun cost about 3500$ average condition.
The webly and Scott sells for 6000 to 8000 $.
The Westley Richards shotgun will sells for 12000 to 18000$ easily.
The Holland and Holland with some gold lettering will easily sell for 20000$
A typical browning shotgun sells for 9000$.
A typical Beretta model 1935 pistol in .32 cal which sells in USA FOR 350$ will cost 8000 to 1000$
A typical mauser rifle may cost about 15000$
The Blazer you showed in one of your videos with a straight pull action ( plus slightly engraved body and multi callber barrels ) will sell for 50000 to 60000$ .
And a Beretta or glock or Smith and Wesson or Walther pistol with a spare magazine and box that you can buy for 1000$ will sell in India for a price of 30000 to 40000$ .
The above mentioned prices are for average guns ( reblued and restocked and or repaired , with or without factory recoil pad. )

Makes me so sad to hear people getting taxed to death because of a fun and lawful hobby. I’m in Canada and we pay a premium over American prices and can get most of what they get plus a whole lot more which would make many Yankee’s green with envy. I gladly pay these prices since our dollar is weaker, (a good thing for world trade I may add) and our health care and infrastructure which is 1/10th the size but in many ways better run, (mostly due to size not incompetent government). Many other countries don’t allow such open freedom as the USA and this freedom was extended to me when I lived in Washington. I love the USA and hold them responsible for many of our Canadian freedoms and often correct my brethren of their ignorance.

I have a question. You talk about measuring and assembling the gun with regard to regulation so that the barrels converge at a set distance. How do the makers go about regulating the barrels? I am imagining some kind of adjustable rig/jig that hold the barrels in place for firing before final brazing/welding or soldering into their final positions. Is that how it is done or is there some other simpler or indeed more complex manner in which they accomplish this regulation of barrels?

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns
      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

There are traditional ways involving wedges and spacers and brazing/solder etc... and then there are modern laser and robot systems such as I believe Beretta uses. The convergence points are mathematical equations now; although I'm sure the British still use their minds and test.

    • @Stigstigster

If you're willing to pay the price for bismuth, lots of older guns will be available. If you must use steel instead then newer guns will be needed, esp. for heavy loads. In Britain these have superior steel proof marked with a fleur de lis. Then there are over and unders, too. Unless you are experienced with sxs doubles, learning to shoot them well will require work. O/U are easier because of the easily seen single sighting plane. They are also available with a larger variety of rib designs and choke tubes.

I think that we should get things right!! The Webley & Scott gun you are handling in your video is a 700 series gun made in Birmingham England built and finished by hand and made to last a lifetime of work, unfortunately production ceased approximately forty years ago they are far above the quality of the Webley & Scott guns you see today. The barrels are not if chopper lump construction the lumps are dovetailed but ware wise just as good, in this world there is nothing perfect this gun does not have a replicable hinge pin in the action casting so all putting back on face has to be done from the barrel hook. Saying that my two 700s after some fifty years use still close up like well fitted bank vault doors. If you are under thirty and you can find one of these English "Plane Jane" factory hand built guns at a good price purchase it, because when the shooting world wakes up to the fact that these guns had other more up market names engraved on them and sold at London gun prices their value will quadruple.

The India might be a worst market for firearms . As the government have restricted the grant of licence to its citizens . There are only 3 licences in 2017 for 30 square kilometres of area.
The government has ordered all higher rank officers to avoid providing gun licence unless it's an extremely genuine case .

Hi Sathvik - India can easily surpass China - but in order to unlock the potential of the people of India there has to be freedom. I can assure you that no matter how much people fear freedom....there is no price too high to pay for it. : ) Take care my friend.

    It's useless here sir .
Since arms rules 2016 , air rifle exceeding .22 cal or 20 joules of energy requires an arms licence . The government is not at all thinking about the number of air guns that have been sold in the past . I assure atleast 10000000 air guns are there in India . Even though it's impossible taks the government is still on its argument that air guns are dangerous weapons .
The British influence will never go in the governing system of India .

Hi Jamie - A friend of mine in Houston sent me ; "They can fool some people some of the time. They can even fool most of the people, most of the time - but they can't fool all of the people, all of the time." As for me, I don't pay much attention to the media and all the political games - I think there is a fundamental wisdom in the American people and when it counts - they stick with the constitution and what works - which may not be ideal or what people imagined - but it works.
