    These LD games need to be recreated in HD using camera negatives, color correction, digitally cleaned up, offered in 4:3 & 16:9 aspect ratios, and with optional Sega CD soundtracks to be worthwhile.

    Honestly I'm going to pick this up for my switch just for the pure curiosity of the games. Some of them like time gal have gone up quite a bit in price on the Sega CD so it will definitely be nice to pick this up to experience some of these games for the first time.

      I remember that one! It doesn’t seem to get talked about much these days. I know it wasn’t a great playing game, but it was darn impressive for the time period. We all thought the future would definitely include some incredible hologram games, but pretty much nah…😛

    I would buy this just for Time Gal! I played it for the first time on the Sega CD. It was the best purchase I made for it back in the day. I still enjoy it today. It is a bit easier than the other LD titles in my opinion.

    This is great! Laserdisc is notoriously expensive and other console ports of these LD's were poor at best in terms of video quality compared to the LD and the arcade editions. I love these games and just trying to find them is a hassle let alone the prices currently. 100% ordering regardless of it being in Japanese.

    Probably now the best way to play Time Gal since the Laseractive version is thousands! Would've been cool if they could've snagged the rights to Triad stone/Strahl off Data East, that's the best example of this type of game imo.

    the laser disc games with Dragon's Lair and Space Ace were jaw dropping amazing for the time and was a promise of the future but as time went on games evolved so yes they are interesting but quite dated now for modern gamers who expect way more. It is def one for those who want a collection of past games and considering I own both Capcom arcade collections I do agree to a degree but this isnt something I would buy for myself. Plus Sega CD wise there is way other games like Lunar and Vay which appeal way more and also the Japan only ones of which there was some sweet JRPGS in there

    Yeah, i agree. They are not "good games" as in the hardcore gamer sense, but they are fun with friends, and i think in 2023 they are especially fun on streams where a streamer can introduce their reactions and riff with chat over it.

    It's slightly off the topic, but i remember seeing music laser discs at ' sam goody' in the mid 80s. One was singer melissa manchester and the other was elton john actually frim a concert in russia. He was probably the first western artist to perform there. I remember seeing part of it playing in the store and as I recall the frame rate seemed low even by the standards of the day.

    With the Laser Disc games it was a 50/50 chance to get the right answer to move or you just died. So it was basically like flipping a coin. But really isn't what you find in games now of days that you have to explore while playing most games.

    I’m one of the crazy few that actually owns TimeGal on LD and even play it on my LaserActive once every few years. It’s a fun novelty and I’m sure some will enjoy playing a collection of these, but they aren’t great by any means, not even for the time.

  • @chrislaustin
    @chrislaustin ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm in the minority when it comes to LD games, but I love the genre. I actually owned Time Gal, Ninja H, Cobra Command and Road Blaster for the PS1, when most probably didn't even know they got released. The fact that a company is even acknowledging LD games in this day and age is a huge step in the right direction. As there are tons of amazing offerings that never saw proper ports, and often were never even seen in arcades due to the expensive upkeep and high breakdown rates. I'm hoping this release spurs more developers to release more offerings, but sadly it is highly unlikely. The fact that so far this is only shown for Switch and Japan, says their taking a wait and see attitude. The high price is also an issue, but if a proper clean up of original footage is being done, that is not cheap. So hopefully this comes west and also gets offered on other systems, as that may bring the price down if this gets offered on a disc based system, so fingers crossed. I for sure plan to get this at some point for the unreleased game alone and to show support for actually releasing LD games in 2023.

    I can see a possible US release with Time Gal & Hayate, as those had US releases. Yamato never came to the US, so they'd have to re-dub all the voices (subtitles would not be good in a quick-tine event game). Also, Road Avenger should've been on this as well.

    Folk hate the Quick Time Events in games in the early 2000s, yet love old LD games. I don’t get it. Sure the artwork is nice and all, but watching a Bluray of the animation would probably be more involving than constantly being interrupted with “action”, “left”, “up” and having to watch the same scene over and over every time you make a mistake.

    @HeavyInstinct ปีที่แล้ว

    I spent a lot of time in the arcades back in those days and TBH, I didn't enjoy these games even then. I would walk right past dragon's lair to put another quarter in the Tempest or Donkey Kong machine and countless others of course. The laser disc games just never felt like actual games to me. I have them in my emulation build just for the nostalgia aspect of it but to this day, I never play them.
    They were sort of a "spectacle" as you say. I remember standing there looking at the graphics thinking they looked cool and all but the few times I actually spent the 50 cents to give them a try, I just didn't find them fun to play. Costing twice as much as all the other games didn't help either. That made no sense at all. At least from the consumer's perspective.

    • @Madlittlepixel
      @Madlittlepixel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I remember some places actually charging more than 50 cents for some of these Laserdisc games. Like you could put a quarter in so many other games and play for a decent amount of time, but I felt like these laserdisc games took your money and it was over quick.

    • @HeavyInstinct
      @HeavyInstinct ปีที่แล้ว

    Laser disc game would have been very impressive when they were released. But even then, it wouldn't have taken many people long to realise they weren't anything special and the term graphics was being used very losely for what was just video sequences. In a way, all they were was a think fast chose your own adventure. With the advent of fmv games in the early 90s on home console, they made a resurgence where they could be repackaged for the home market. But they're really nothing special as games go. More an interesting piece of gaming history'

    Meh. I remember playing Don Bluth's Dragon's Lair -- it wasn't that fun at all. I'd rather just watch the cartoon without any button pushing. Thanks for saving me money.

    Ah yes. The Nintendo Switch, dumping ground for quick and dirty ports, and shameless cash grabs. I don't think these games are necessarily worth purchasing outside of original hardware. Granted, they are pricey for the OG releases, but like...these are titles you could release on DVD and play on your remote. Blueray...if resolution is your thing. I won't pick on people for buying these, but it's certainly not something I'd purchase outside of a heavily discounted, used market.

    Actually laser disc games were NEVER popular. My dad was one of the few people that owned a laser disc player. Nobody we knew really knew anything about laserdisc. Also, we didn’t even know about laserdisc games. So it’s a niche thing within a thing that is already very niche to begin with

      LaserDisc games weren't something for a home system. They were an arcade only machine that used LaserDiscs to play the game video. They were a unique experience until CD-ROM was released.

    Let's be clear, movie games like uncharted have as little gameplay as those old games
