Abell Elevator inspection fail and a ride on the 1967 Dover @ Blackburn Science Murray State

- this is a quick view of the old Abell elevator in the Blackburn Science building which is original to the building. It failed inspection in 1999 and they never fixed it so they just shut it down. It is also the only lift in the building that accesses the roof where the telescope is. I remember when I went up to the roof in astronomy class and the first thing the teacher said is "no pointing the telescope at Elizabeth Hall" which is the girls Dorm.

Now that is a fine example of a vintage elevator. WOW! That motor is absolutely gorgeous. That motor and those fixtures really show what a real elevator is. WOW! I really hope you can get this is HD God-forbid it is modernized.
I think Dover and Burlington made some of the best relays. Just listening to them click and harmonize with the motor is amazing.
6 years later and this is still perhaps the most epic vintage dover motor on youtube

This was the first elevator video I watched.
Saw on another video comment somewhere that it was supposedly meant to increase efficiency. But they stopped doing it to eliminate the risk of people tripping or stumbling because it hadn't fully leveled yet.
Ahhh, hear those relays click, music to my ears. lol

Yep. This elevator made me realize:
(1) People close to my age do this stuff (found those much older than me, as well).
(2) Got me started, but before I had a game plan, did the YT's first ever "Man-Powered Elevator" video. (Look what I started, as if you didn't know.)
That Motor Was Epic!!!!
Update with this elevator: Fire Service was installed and call stations replaced with Innovation Universal buttons.
I like this Dover elevator
The Abell elevator failed inspection back in 1999, because one of the interlocks was broken. That meant the door could be opened while the cab was elsewhere, and someone could've fallen down the shaft. That could've resulted in a serious injury or death. I read a comment once that it was never fixed because it wouldn't have made financial sense for the university to do it. More than likely, it's been modernized by now.

same here.. I know an old Otis that does that too.. it's at my doctors office.. I don't know if that's normal or not.. the Otis looks like it's from the mid 60's
some elevators that age randomly creak and pop. what are those noises? it still looks nice.

I thought they could have just replaced the entire door interlock and keep that elevator working, if you are saying that is the only elevator in the building then there has to be an issue with the ADA legislation in the US, which could force them tro bring that lift back into operatioon as if one or both of the other lifts, if there are two did fail then a lack of disabled access could provide a legality issue for the building owners which I think could cost them mroe than a simple lock.

Josh the Abell got shut down because they never fixed it and I read a comment and Andrew was saying they didn't have the money to get the part. It failed inspection in 1999. And unfortunately this elevator has been modernized and looks like the east elevator according to a comment I read on the video of the east video.
