Santana was one of my first Idols ..when i started to play guitar ..back in the 90´s in Swizerland ..i also started to listen to much Guitarmusic in general , and bought nearly all of his records .. (Moonflower ..Lotus , Black magic woman etc. think i have to "re-visit" all of his great records .. Saw Carlos tour with Al Dimeola in 1980. First at SB CountyBowl and then the next night at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. Al Di Meola opened both shows. You could hear a pin drop during Al Di Meola's set in Santa Barabara. People we're stunned Al DiMeola fresh from Return to Forever with Chick Corea was really something in those early days. WIde open Marshall stacks. Carlos came out a did a mediocre set. to finish. Which was really rare. The buzz was all Al Di Meola. The next night in Berkekely something OVERNIGHT took hold of Carlos Santana in his Home. Not only did he smoke every Al DiMeola lick, riff and mode he did it BETTER. In fact, Al Di Meola was standing on the side of the stage and his eyes and mouth we're wide open. Carlos Santana can play any body else's notes with more ? than anybody I ever saw. He came back out with Carlos for a finale that was spectacular. PS: Saw him do this same thing with George Benson in 1976 Don Kirschner's Rock Concert on TV. except in that case Carlos did his magic in OCTAVES like George Benson and Wes Montgomery on steroids.
Damnit man! I saw Santana from cheapskate hill at the Greek Theater that year as a kid. But now I know that I missed seeing Al for the first time. Luckily I got to see him a couple of years later with Paco De Lucia and John McLaughlin. Steve Morse opened up for them (solo acoustic set) and joined them for a couple of tunes as an encore. By far one of the best shows I've ever seen to this very day!

Great video again. Your guitar sound is once again amazing. Coupled with your teaching format a real ear Opener. This is a powerful lesson hidden in Santanas mellow vibe. I learned some of his stuff years back but didn't understand what I was playing modally. I could do it because the chords pull you to the correct melody tone or note, usually just a slid note at the end of a passage of notes. I think this is a great example in modal melody. A must visit for all.
Yea, that's something many great players have done. The end of that tapping riff Eddie does in the intro to _Hot For the Teacher_ is a good example because of how simple, attainable and obvious it is, not how complex and difficult (not that it's all that easy to play well ofc). He taps on the 12th fret and pulls off from the 8th, 7th and 5th frets on the E, B and G strings ending on an A note (7th fret D string), witch makes it A dorian with a flat 5.

Always loved Santana and his tone. Abraxas - fantastic, "Let the children play" - loved that from a later album, "Festival". I have a Squire strat at the moment but not too happy with the fretboard (a little rough). I keep looking at the PRS Santana SE. Have you had any chance to. try that model out? Would you consider it a good upgrade?
Santana was just 22 or 23 years old when he played Woodstock(!). He and the band were amazing. Thanks again David! (And yes, Santana makes Dorian great.) Say, a weird thing (to me) I learned is that Black Magic Woman is actually a Peter Green tune first recorded with Fleetwood Mac with a few different rhythmic feels and lyrics. (Thanks to one of Jeff McErlain's TrueFire course for that!) Santana really made it their own.

PART#2 lesson keep showing more dorian and harmonic minor Santana licks in the 80's live concerts would help learn more about modes.His brother Jorge Santana is way better with using Spanish scales and harmonic minor. Jorge Santana phrasing uses more leading tones and dissonances that sound out of key but has that Santana magic to it. I doubt many people even know who Jorge Santana even is or have heard of him with Carlos at lives concerts in the late 80's

Dorian is one of my favourite Modes ..some of the greatest Guitar Pieces are in Dorian ...("No Quarter" -Led Zep , "Mean Street" -Van Halen , believe it or not ..LoL , it´s in A-dorian) For Example ..Did you know Pagey´s Live Improvisations of "No Quarter" Solo ? If you Play it in D (The Studio version was pitched down with tape recorder ) Just Play around the D-dorian Scale and DON´t play the B ..i mean just play melody´s and licks around the D-dorian scale without the b note and sometimes add the "Blue Note" , the G#.. There you have Instant Page sound ..it´s Bluesy and dorian sounding ..very Cool ..
Theory always confuses me. Wouldn't the corresponding Dorian mode in that first lick in A minor (A aeolian) be D Dorian, which has the same notes? I thought that's how modes worked: same notes across the whole fretboard, just different starting points. Hence, wouldn't A Dorian be better suited to a key of E minor/G major situation? Perhaps you're just showing how close two keys can be to each other? Another question: why would you have to hit the 6th to be considered aeolian - can't you just avoid whatever notes in the scale to make whatever phrase sounds appealing? Seems like Santana is just popping between Aeolian and the minor pentatonic form, which I'd think is a common way to solo (at least that's what I do - use all the scales I can in that key to keep things interesting: A natural minor & the corresponding modes for those notes, A minor pentatonic, A blues, and sometimes A Harmonic Minor and/or Lydian Dominant if I can make it work). Loving these videos though, don't get me wrong.

I played in this really popular blues jam in Annapolis back in the 90s and this dude that played like 2 grouos behind me literally played behimd his head Jimmy style, walked off the stage playing, and stood face to face with me while i was sitting at the bar in front of the stage. Literally the dumbest shit I've even seen playing live. Funny thing is , there was a dude that played that night that toured with ZZ Top as a backup guitar player. My guy thought he was Ralph Machio thst night 😂😂

A Aeolian is the 6th degree of the key of C and A Dorian is the 2nd degree of the key of G, so couldn't you just riff in C for A Aeolian and G for A Dorian?
Personally I don't believe in "good solos" I believe in "the right notes" And guess what.... Santana was so closed to Miles Davis. That's what I'm talking 'bout.
Love his music and his musical "instinct" , but he is absolutely CLUELESS when it comes to politics and what the avg. "Joe" deals with on the daily. A few times I've seen him live and he'll lecture the audience on politics . He once said "we" need Hillary in the White House - this was around 2011 or 2012 , ...needless to say , haha! The crowd booed him down. And thank God they did: "we" don't need a multi-millionaire musician telling us who "we" need in the White House. The guy has been out of touch with the common man for decades. He owns several properties in Hawaii etc.. - he's rich , and he's done very , very well for himself considering he came from Tijuana and played dives and bars as a teenager etc. He made his career , here, in the USA - he became very wealthy on the economy and laws , here. I guarantee , if he lost everything , he wouldn't be praising Communist politicians like fucking piece of shit Hillary Clinton or Obama. Carlos plays the note meant for spiritual music. Might not be the most technical guitarist on the planet but when he plays its melodic and immaculate

Love his music and his musical "instinct" , but he is absolutely CLUELESS when it comes to politics and what the avg. "Joe" deals with on the daily. A few times I've seen him live and he'll lecture the audience on politics . He once said "we" need Hillary in the White House - this was around 2011 or 2012 , ...needless to say , haha! The crowd booed him down. And thank God they did: "we" don't need a multi-millionaire musician telling us who "we" need in the White House. The guy has been out of touch with the common man for decades. He owns several properties in Hawaii etc.. - he's rich , and he's done very , very well for himself considering he came from Tijuana and played dives and bars as a teenager etc. He made his career , here, in the USA - he became very wealthy on the economy and laws , here. I guarantee , if he lost everything , he wouldn't be praising Communist politicians like fucking piece of shit Hillary Clinton or Obama. But alas, such is the Liberal way: they want money for social programs etc.. but they mean YOUR money , not their money.
