As a windows handheld user, I can relate😆. literally every time my aunt wants to play on my legion go, I just put it on steam big picture mode so that she doesnt need to navigate through a desktop.

Hey, first, thanks for this review. Followed everything this morning and have a working Legion Go with Bazzite. Two quick questions: what is the default resolution and is there a way to change that in any way? Second question is, have you run into issues where you select what’s essentially the Steam button to bring up the left menu in a game and the ability to quit the game, the animation is severely delayed?
the default resolution for games will be the native screen resolution, but you can change the resolution per-game via the steam settings for that game. not sure about the 2nd question, haven't really seen that.
Note, Nested Desktop app was recently removed from Bazzite because it is broken with KDE 6. Valve needs to update Nested Desktop app for KDE 6, but since SteamOS is still on KDE 5.27, it probably won't be fixed anytime soon. Once Valve fixes Nested Desktop, it'll probably be back.
I just picked up the legion Go today and had this video saved to set up. Can you explain to me if there is any benefit up doing dual boot now? Is the nested desktop app separate from Bazzite or is the app Bazzite itself. Sorry completely new to Linux but I am ready to learn and try it for the first time. Also if nested desktop doesn’t work is there other alternatives you recommend?
@@paradox8038 Regular Desktop mode still works perfectly fine, it's the nested desktop app that no longer functions. Dual boot is worthwhile if you want a console-like experience via Bazzite, but still want to have Windows available for specific incompatible games.

Hi I followed this exact guide to dual boot and my emudeck data has been corrupted, I uninstalled and im trying to reinstall but It asks for a Sudo password and I can’t seem to get in. I can’t find a time stamp did you happen to set up a sudo in this tutorial?
So I got the latest of all this installed some of the items are not in the same place as this video. Also as stated here manual GPU clock slider is not showing up anywhere when turned on. The Watt slider looks like it moved to TDP area.
Im not very familiar with linux OS's and after almost two whole days of trying to get Bazzite on my ROG Ally Z1 extreme I have up on trying to install bazzite directly and ended up getting it to work by rebasing from kinoite to bazzite. Now i cant seem to get simpledeckytdp or HHD to work. When i run the command i get failed to restart plugin_loader.service failed and cant seem to find any fixes for it. Can you help a brotha out? 🙏
I followed this tutorial and had no problem with the dual boot setup! A couple of the parts look different now with an updated Bazzite, but all was well. I have a couple of questions. First of all, though most things seem to be at the right resolution, some things in desktop mode on Bazzite (Ryujinx, for example) have fonts so small that the menu bars are barely visible. I had integer scaling set up in Windows. Could that be an issue? If not, how could I fix this? Secondly, I cannot get a virtual keyboard to pop up in desktop mode. Any suggestions? I'm liking this setup so far. Thanks!
I can't get fedora bazzite to remove from boot order despite deleting and resizing. I have windows first and it's not an issue but I hate that it's still an option. Why??
Im confused, When you removed linux, you returned to the steam os menu. So you have steam os and nested desktop windows? Am i making sense? SteamOs+Windows?
may i know how to do the automount the partition, i created an additional partition, however it won't auto mount it. and It seem missing the "Disks" management tool in bazzite. any alternative way to do it, except etc/fstab, cause not familiar in command.
i follow your guide to installed, but seem i still having a lot of problems like quick resume, not fully working and switch to desktop and return to steam game mode will be black screen. and while in sleep mode the battery drain very fast, and can feel the charging port very hot, tdp setting follow your guide. follow your guide until the last one, to remove all partitions and back to windows.
Could you boot from an external ssd portable drive? Instead of using partition space from your enternal drive? Would I just use the same partition steps for the external drive, if it shows up?
sure, you can install it on external. just a warning though, the LGO had stability issues when booting off an external SSD, I don't know if Lenovo fixed the problem.

When I’m on battery power everything works fine, but when I plug the charger in it runs extremely slow and is unusable. Any idea why this is might be happening?
For me the install failed in the middle of the installation by saying that there were some python files missing / not functional in _opener. I am currently not sure what to make of this information because I plugged the usb drive into the legion go directly. Verification after Balena Etcher finished also didn't throw any errors. So strange. Not quite sure what to do from here
So what I understand from the start and conclusion of the video is that you can get SteamOS on the LegionGo and still have windows as the desktop mode. Are there any downsides or bugs to doing this? Because having SteamOs on a handheld system with more features and no compatibility issues sounds like a dream to me. I know that Bazzite is what's installed but is there any difference between bazzite and SteamOS? Is it just a recreation? Bonus question: Does this boot automatically into Bazzite and go to the windows desktop by going to the desktop mode like the steamdeck? Edit: Ok I just watched Ari's demonstration of the dual boot system. Very cool way to handle it. I hope that you don't need to boot into that menu every time but it's better to do that than not have SteamOS lol
hey Aru thanks for all the videos tutorials and contribution i'm really wanting to dual boot but i am hoping to play my games on a game only partition one partition is already set for windows only and i have this partition with 3.5 tb of games in it the partition is NTFS is there anyway i could access and play those games from windows and bazzite vice versa ?
Bazzite does have an NTFS driver built in already, so it can technically read files from Windows. You need to be extremely careful though, there's always the risk of the NTFS partition getting corrupted when being accessed by multiple operating systems. The only way I'd consider it is if your games are on a separate game data only NTFS partition, that way even if the data partition gets corrupted, your important files can be on your Windows boot partition.
i'm getting stuck at the creation of /boot/efi error selected mount point is already set for another device :( i dont really know what to doo if i deleve the other efi partition this would probably screwing windows boot manager

Gonna try this out. I have the 1tb legion go and was wondering if I should just partition 40gb for windows just for the updates. Question, how's the performance on Bazzite compared to windows? Also, can you install development apps like Visual Studio Code and other software developer IDE? Would be awesome to use the legion as an all in one device.
yeah, you can keep a small partition for windows, that's totally fine. As for performance, unfortunately I'm not the best person to ask because I basically never used my windows partition. As for development apps like VS code and other software stuff, you can definitely install it via distrobox or rpm-ostree, but the dev environment setup is definitely a bit more complex than a traditional distro. I've been doing all the Decky plugin dev work on the Legion Go itself, works pretty nicely.
@@lckillah i think there's definitely value in keeping windows around for game compatibility reasons + bios/firmware updates. There's no way to do bios/firmware updates on the LGO with linux.
how do you choose which OS to boot into (sort of like a GRUB menu) instead of going into BIOS and choosing from there? I'm attempting to set this up on my Win Max 2 7840U and eventually my Win Mini 7840U once I get it
Did you also install SimpleDeckyTDP using the normal curl command in the past? It seems like the ujust command doesn't exist anymore and I am a little wary of just going that route. I mean I did it right now but I'm also still just rolling back to 20240220, just wondering if there is anything to watch out for in that case.
Okay it seems like the latest version of the distro got rid of the ujust command for that. On the previous version (the one that stops the fans) it's still available

hi, im follwing your guide but im having an issue, whenever i try to update bazzite it just says its installing scripts and nothing is happening, when i try to launch bazzite in game mode it launches upside down and the controllers dont work despite installing decky hdd.
hrmm, this sounds like something that you should ask about in the bazzite discord. the hhd dev + bazzite devs might have a better idea on what's going on. That being said, recently some new gamescope updates have led to a bunch of reported bugs. A rollback to old bazzite might be a good idea while waiting for bugs to settle down + get fixed.
So unfortunately, resizing a bazzite partition after install is very tricky. basically you would need to do three things: 1. resize windows partition smaller 2. somehow move the already existing bazzite partitions such that they are at the beginning of the "free space" on the disk 3. extend the size of the primary bazzite partition You cannot move partitions while booted into bazzite, and windows doesn't recognize the bazzite partitions so you can't move them. Thus the entire process is complicated and requires you to boot Linux off a usb, and manually move + resize the partitions while booted off usb. there's two alternatives that I'd recommend 1. create a data-only partition with the free space you reclaim from Windows, and have bazzite auto-mount that data partition and use it for steam games 2. do a clean reinstall of bazzite. Up to you on which you'd prefer

I’m having an issue where the device will not boot into game mode. It goes into an install but hangs with 1 percent left. If I reboot it restarts the entire process. Any ideas??
Decky loader has a bug where it only shows up after the device gets an internet connection, after it can still be used offline. This is not a Bazzite specific bug, but I think they did fix the bug
integer scaling does work. That being said, I personally think the global FSR is better than int scaling. Int scaling is only really good for pixel games.
primarily because it can also delete the Linux partitions if you decide to ever go back to Windows full time. The built in Windows disk manager can't delete the Linux EFI partition

(Legion Go) when trying to partition around 700gb to bazzite, i get "[Error Code: 4642, Error Text: ERR_NTFS_TOO_MANY_FRAGMENTS]" during restart. only about 160 or so gigs on my 1tb SSD. even tried to do half and half and i get same error. it doesnt even get used to often tbh. any ideas?
You can either press steam + x to use the Steam keyboard, or enable the maliit keyboard with this script github.com/aarron-lee/legion-go-tricks/blob/main/bazzite-maliit-keyboard.sh I personally prefer the maliit keyboard on desktop mode, but that's my personal preference

It was working beautifully since kde 6 came out, then a couple of days ago there was a minor update, I'm not sure what got updated, but it completely broke. Anytime I try to start it I just get a black screen and the FPS counter freezes. I'm just wondering if it's just me or if anybody else is having the same problem.

nothing really, this video is basically the same video with some minor corrections. maybe take a quick look at 21:21 for unified frame limiter, and 19:55 for RGB control. And as an extra, you can setup a CSS theme at 26:52. But that's really it
for games? in steam settings. if you're asking for desktop mode, unfortunately right now the best you can do is change display scaling. different resolutions often don't work in desktop mode right now on the LGO.

Legion go has higher peak performance, but worse battery life, than the Steam Deck. Basically you need to choose the tradeoff you are comfortable with.

LegionGoRemapper has some missing stuff. On windows, u can bind the back buttons to any keybind/keyboard button. LegionGoRemapper on Bazzite on the other hand, doesn’t have that

@@yoandrewntsahh, ok. I know your problem. You probably used the wrong installer for SimpleDeckyTDP. Go to the SimpleDeckyTDP Github, there's a specific "BazziteOS installer". It does some special extras to enable the GPU slider on BazziteOS.

The manual partitions are primarily for to create a separate EFI partition for Linux. That way, Windows won't accidentally wipe the Linux boot entries after bios or OS updates.
I put Bazzite and had to revert to windows. After a couple of days the update system broke for me and was having issues with controllers and display rotation and stability issues. I do think Bazzite is superior to windows but it still needs work. I would give it another month or two and see where things are. Buy another drive or dual boot. But be very careful. Sucks having to reinstall everything.
Due to the fact that Steam OS consumes fewer resources, it gives you FPS more steadily and smoothly. The picture is smoother than on Windows and there are fewer drawdowns in frame time.
yep, should work fine. though currently i'd recommend keeping around some way to run Windows. Bios and Controller firmware updates only work through Windows right now.

@@aaroncamm2024steam + X for keyboard on desktop mode. As for xbox, you can just set it in your hhd settings. note that xbox controller doesn't support the back buttons or gyro
you can install VPNs, try asking in the bazzite discord. I don't know if mullvad specifically is supported, but it might be possible that it will work.

Yooo aru, as you probably saw on discord, I have a question (as always), can you do a rebase guide for those that want to try gnome or wise versa? I heard that the gnome version is much more tablet friendly 😅
Gnome can be more tablet friendly, but also has some incompatibilities with SteamOS features like nested desktop, some bugs, etc. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it unless you really want the Gnome experience.
if performance is your reason for considering Bazzite, you should stop. Some games are better on bazzite, others on Windows. The main reason to choose bazzite is for quality-of-life features, such as working quick suspend-resume, per-game custom TDP controls, per game fps caps, etc.
Have you used a Steam Deck before? Then you know how absolute crap Windows 11 is for handheld gaming. Not to mention Lenovo’s pathetic attempts at optimizing the OS. It doesn’t matter how much better certain games run on Windows if it’s a constant struggle just to launch and have the controls work as intended

Deleting the portion to get rid of Bazzite doesn't work for me . If i restart my Legion Go it goes into grub> and Bazzite is still in the boot menu.

Hi, is there a way to lock the cpu to a certain frequency? the power saving governor doesn't do much and disabling performance boost isn't enough.

uhoh, did you touch your windows partition during the bazzite install? if done correctly, it shouldn't touch the windows partition at all.

@@aru3Turns out the flash drives I used were just faulty. Getting a proper one and using that as my boot device did the trick.

You need to be extremely careful though, there's always the risk of the NTFS partition getting corrupted when being accessed by multiple operating systems. The only way I'd consider it is if your games are on a separate game data only NTFS partition, that way even if the data partition gets corrupted, your important files can be on your Windows boot partition.

that sounds like you need to defragment your windows partition, or delete some files. something in windows is preventing the resize
Gonna try this out. I have the 1tb legion go and was wondering if I should just partition 40gb for windows just for the updates. Question, how's the performance on Bazzite compared to windows? Also, can you install development apps like Visual Studio Code and other software developer IDE? Would be awesome to use the legion as an all in one device.
yeah, you can keep a small partition for windows, that's totally fine. As for performance, unfortunately I'm not the best person to ask because I basically never used my windows partition. As for development apps like VS code and other software stuff, you can definitely install it via distrobox or rpm-ostree, but the dev environment setup is definitely a bit more complex than a traditional distro. I've been doing all the Decky plugin dev work on the Legion Go itself, works pretty nicely.

@@lckillah i think there's definitely value in keeping windows around for game compatibility reasons + bios/firmware updates. There's no way to do bios/firmware updates on the LGO with linux.

Did you also install SimpleDeckyTDP using the normal curl command in the past? It seems like the ujust command doesn't exist anymore and I am a little wary of just going that route. I mean I did it right now but I'm also still just rolling back to 20240220, just wondering if there is anything to watch out for in that case.
Okay it seems like the latest version of the distro got rid of the ujust command for that. On the previous version (the one that stops the fans) it's still available

Valve fully disabled the TDP slider for non-deck hardware, so the experimental toggle no longer works. it's been removed

hi, im follwing your guide but im having an issue, whenever i try to update bazzite it just says its installing scripts and nothing is happening, when i try to launch bazzite in game mode it launches upside down and the controllers dont work despite installing decky hdd.
hrmm, this sounds like something that you should ask about in the bazzite discord. the hhd dev + bazzite devs might have a better idea on what's going on.
That being said, recently some new gamescope updates have led to a bunch of reported bugs. A rollback to old bazzite might be a good idea while waiting for bugs to settle down + get fixed.
Hey I initially gave bazzite about half of my available space. I want to make that partition bigger now. How do I do that?
So unfortunately, resizing a bazzite partition after install is very tricky. basically you would need to do three things:
1. resize windows partition smaller
2. somehow move the already existing bazzite partitions such that they are at the beginning of the "free space" on the disk
3. extend the size of the primary bazzite partition
You cannot move partitions while booted into bazzite, and windows doesn't recognize the bazzite partitions so you can't move them. Thus the entire process is complicated and requires you to boot Linux off a usb, and manually move + resize the partitions while booted off usb.
there's two alternatives that I'd recommend
1. create a data-only partition with the free space you reclaim from Windows, and have bazzite auto-mount that data partition and use it for steam games
2. do a clean reinstall of bazzite.

I’m having an issue where the device will not boot into game mode. It goes into an install but hangs with 1 percent left. If I reboot it restarts the entire process. Any ideas??

Since the latest BIOS update, the Decky plugins no longer show up in Game Mode for me. Have others noticed this?
Decky loader has a bug where it only shows up after the device gets an internet connection, after it can still be used offline. This is not a Bazzite specific bug, but I think they did fix the bug

sure. first enable dualsense edge as the controller emulator, then in steam input remap your back buttons to whatever you want

integer scaling does work. That being said, I personally think the global FSR is better than int scaling. Int scaling is only really good for pixel games.

Any reason you prefer using a 3rd party partition resized over native Windows disk manager?
primarily because it can also delete the Linux partitions if you decide to ever go back to Windows full time. The built in Windows disk manager can't delete the Linux EFI partition

(Legion Go) when trying to partition around 700gb to bazzite, i get "[Error Code: 4642, Error Text: ERR_NTFS_TOO_MANY_FRAGMENTS]" during restart. only about 160 or so gigs on my 1tb SSD. even tried to do half and half and i get same error. it doesnt even get used to often tbh. any ideas?
There's most likely some sort of windows files that need to be moved or defragmented.

Currently Valve forces the button as one of the ABXY buttons in steamUI. In an actual game, you can remap it to do nothing via steam input.

nothing really, this video is basically the same video with some minor corrections. maybe take a quick look at 21:21 for unified frame limiter, and 19:55 for RGB control. And as an extra, you can setup a CSS theme at 26:52. But that's really it

for games? in steam settings. if you're asking for desktop mode, unfortunately right now the best you can do is change display scaling. different resolutions often don't work in desktop mode right now on the LGO.

Legion go has higher peak performance, but worse battery life, than the Steam Deck. Basically you need to choose the tradeoff you are comfortable with.

LegionGoRemapper has some missing stuff. On windows, u can bind the back buttons to any keybind/keyboard button. LegionGoRemapper on Bazzite on the other hand, doesn’t have that
You shouldn't use LegionGoRemapper to rebind back buttons, use the Dualsense Edge controller emulation via hhd + steam input to remap

About over a month ago, I didn't have to add the partitions manually when installing Bazzite on my Legion Go.
The manual partitions are primarily for to create a separate EFI partition for Linux. That way, Windows won't accidentally wipe the Linux boot entries after bios or OS updates.
Are there any downsides to completely replacing windows with bazzite?

If you’re not a power user I would advise against replacing windows completely.
I put Bazzite and had to revert to windows. After a couple of days the update system broke for me and was having issues with controllers and display rotation and stability issues. I do think Bazzite is superior to windows but it still needs work. I would give it another month or two and see where things are. Buy another drive or dual boot. But be very careful. Sucks having to reinstall everything.
Due to the fact that Steam OS consumes fewer resources, it gives you FPS more steadily and smoothly. The picture is smoother than on Windows and there are fewer drawdowns in frame time.

you can install VPNs, try asking in the bazzite discord. I don't know if mullvad specifically is supported, but it might be possible that it will work.

Gnome can be more tablet friendly, but also has some incompatibilities with SteamOS features like nested desktop, some bugs, etc. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it unless you really want the Gnome experience.

if performance is your reason for considering Bazzite, you should stop. Some games are better on bazzite, others on Windows. The main reason to choose bazzite is for quality-of-life features, such as working quick suspend-resume, per-game custom TDP controls, per game fps caps, etc.

Have you used a Steam Deck before? Then you know how absolute crap Windows 11 is for handheld gaming. Not to mention Lenovo’s pathetic attempts at optimizing the OS. It doesn’t matter how much better certain games run on Windows if it’s a constant struggle just to launch and have the controls work as intended
