In the books, he kills Joffrey during a melee, but tourneys are expensive to film. I agree. That is one of the moments that could have been handled better.

I think these paintings comes from the Targaryen/Valyrian traditions since they are kinda like the pagans of this world (or the romans against the Christianity represented by the Seven) and the rest of Westeros are probably not very comfortable with these (which is probably why Alicent replace them later).
I don't recall an example of Westeros being homophobic (though maybe I'm forgetting something), it's just that in a feudal society, you need to produce heirs, and that requires heterosexual relations.

During Tywin and Olenna's conversation Tywin expresses disgust at the idea that he and his boyhood companions fooled around. And then there's the High Sparrow who is very blatantly homophobic given what he did to poor Loras. In the books it's unknown. What we do know is that Highgarden and the Reach doesn't seem to care, and it's possible Dorne doesn't either.
