From the 1870s through the early 1900s, when a small fire broke out in the interior of the home, a glass orb known as a fire grenade was taken from a wall-mounted-bracket or kept handy next to the fireplace and thrown at the base of the flames. The grenades were filled, in some cases, with salt water (used because it would not freeze in the winter cold), others were filled with carbon tetrachloride and sealed with a cork and cement. The concept was simple; the glass orb shattered on contact and the contents, as it spewed onto the flames, vaporized into fire extinguishing gas.

What an amazing collection of bells, the round one with a square handle on the top is a crotal bell, put round an animals neck on a collar, my late Mum would have loved them. I have never heard of the fire grenades, I wouldn't want to break one of them as you dont know what's in them. The Christmas box had wonderful items in it and I'm not surprised Ashley came in for that, you need some room to put the village houses on display. Have a wonderful day my friends, God bless all love and hugs Mary-Ellen UK

What's in old glass fire extinguishers?
Early glass fire grenades were full of a salt water solution with added bicarbonate of soda or muriate of ammonia. Due to the use of salt water as an ingredient the fire grenade was advertised as non-freezing. Carbon tetrachloride, a dangerous chemical, was used as the fire deterrent in many glass fire grenades.

I'd love to see you auction off some bells and other collectables. Could you split them up in smaller lots for some of us who are not resellers? I'd really appreciate being able to get various collectables without having to commit to an expensive large collection. I know I'm not the only one who doesn't have the room for them.

Shur-Stop were very early fire extinguishers. You would place these little fire extinguishers in those holders to have all around your house or business in case of a fire. I worked for a company that owned an old mountain lodge build in 1900 and those Sur-Stop extinguishers were everywhere.

12:30: Rule of thumb for china: the thinner and lighter, the more expensive! Oh, and that little bowl might well be the sugar bowl. Does the lid fit on it?
27:45: One for Wade, it is indeed a curling iron. Put it in the fire until warm (but not red hot obviously) and curl your hair. Or burn it, whatever.
Anyway, best wishes, and may all your storage lockers be as rewarding as this one!

Some of those antique bells will sell very well. Especially the ones that are made of pewter, silver and copper - Oh and I dont know if you guys figured it out already, but the white and blue porcelain spare lid?? That goes to the little cup thats not a cup, if that makes sense. Its a sugar dish I believe.. And the thing you guys thought was an old curling wand is an old wick sniper :) Real fun video for Christmas day! I hope you all had a great holiday too!!! Small edit; Keep the medical cotton balls, swabs and tongue depressors in the canisters that they were found in. Those will sell better that way and if the buyer doesnt want them in there, they can toss them. :)

Today we have fire extinguisher encased in a box/mounted on a wall in a bracket. The wire bracket you have would be mounted on a wall, glass ball with liquid chemical rest in the wire bracket.
