im putting all of my patreons names in sharpie on each single knob! i still have a fair few knobs that need names!
if you'd like your name on a knob! think about supporting these projects over on my patreon it helps to make these big things and im working on something right now that will make it possible for people to be able to come and play on them! info over there :www.patreon.com/lookmumnocomputer

wait, if 10 oscillators is 20 x 40 cm, and you need 100 of those modules, 20*100 = 2000 and 40*100 = 4000. Then the final machine is gonna be 40 metres by 20 metres, and not 4 by 2 meters, right?

@@wrraf i need 100 of these laid out in a 10x10 grid. so it wont be 100x100 that would make it a 100,000 oscillator megadrone, which may very well be possible! but lets take it in steps :D

Sounds like something straight out of Clockwork Orange.
Also, half the amount of soldering 1,000 is still five times the amount of soldering 100. So, either way, there's some crazy amount of work going into this.

i tried making one of these buzzers today! after 2 (failed) attempts i had an fun buzz, although for some reason the led didn't do anything and the bass sounded nothing like it did in the video. maybe I shouldn't run it directly into my audio interface? I'm still happy about the outcome regardless since it was also my first time soldering anything! This project you're starting now looks incredible, I can't wait to see (and hear) the outcome.

Hi, glad to see you resurected the project. K.I.S.S. principle, Keep It Simple Stupid, plus repetition works. My first build was an18 Oscillator "Delia Device" using 6 banks of 3 oscillator, each bank had a different capacitor value. I used the 9v version, so it needs lots of pre-amping, a hell of a lot, so it picks up a lot of noise, in a lo-fi way, each bay has a master frequency knob which affects other parameters, unintendedly. It has lots of other great unintended glitch's. I would never have tried without your excellent channel, especially something as complex. I occaisionally de-bug a bit more, as I gain more knowledge. But I want to leave it unpredictable. Keep up the good work.

Make them tiny with multiturn trim pots and tune each module to q cord. Then you can tune cords for each key, like the old spinnet/air organ cheater cord buttons.
Also, a bandpass filter may be more useful.
If nothing else, set up some with High pass, some band pass, some low pass. Then you can span them across the frequency spectrum.
    A few thoughts...

  • @spookypen
    @spookypen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I think you're going to hit the law of diminishing returns way before 1k oscillators. What might offset that is to run the oscillators in banks of 100, run them through 10 separate amplifiers hooked up to 10 separate speakers. Positioned correctly you could create some interesting dynamics as the drones interact in physical space (bit like moray patterns).

Maybe an idea for the next big project: SMD components and an assembly house. If you only let them solder on the SMD components and not through hole components like pots, it's not that expensive you might even break even compaired to all throughhole and self assembly, with SMD components being cheaper. And more importantly safe you a massive amount of time, because let's face it, soldering 1 or 2 prototypes is fun, soldering a 1000 isn't.
And a random neat prototyping fact: 0805 smd components are perfectly sized to solder between the pads of a prefboard/stripboard.

On a bit of a digression, you gave me an idea for something interesting music folk could do over voice chat, that involves one person starting a tune from scratch, possibly timed. Then they would send it/stream it to another person who would take that skeleton and add some meat, and then it would continue on to another person who adds their own stylized tweaks, and so on. Like a conveyer belt, building some magical piece of sound ambrosia live in like a half hour. You could even do a real-time scenerio of a revolving piece of music that you have like 20 seconds to spice up before it's out of your hands and on to the next person. I dunno, something to do. Maybe unfeasible. Might just end up like that I Love Lucy episode.

It's probably going to end up sounding like a beehive scratching its collective arse!
With that number of oscillators, and without any form of temperature compensation, you going to have major problems with drift simply due to the convection currents that will be circulating in the case. Although it is possible that you might be able to ease the problem somewhat if you try to match the transistors into batches for each bank so that they detune at roughly the same rate.

I would highly recommend building a couple rigs that hold all of the components that need to be soldered on in place so you can just go down the line and solder them. A two man team would speed this up a lot, one placing the components in a second rig and the other soldering. You'll also really want a solder gun with a solder wire feed if you don't already have one
(they save so much time and you can hold components while soldering)
Damn this is going to be pretty darn cool, good luck my man and I hope to be able to support you!

Hey! I have dabbled with surface mount. However I’ve never really liked the way it looks. It looks far too computery. I’d like to think my machines live in a present day where people liked through hole 😂. It just looks nicer and bigger. And this machine is more of an art piece hence the choice for through hole. Trust me it did run past my mind. I have a half finished surface mount pcb for this which I ditched :)

@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER You are the man! Built one of these oscillators and it's sound is so unique, I love it. Someone could build a super complex synth based around that oscillator and it would be awesome.

2300 pots and knobs. 200 jacks. 100 panels. Oscillator components 100 times. I don't even imagine how much this costed.

That is awesome! Looks very cool. and the design sounds amazing! I think it will sound massive, high voltage synth. Daydreamer might be one of my favorite tracks, can not wait to hear the final rendering. :D

@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER Think it got the kind of feel to it that I enjoy alot in music, so unless it got a bunch out of tune violins or something I will enjoy the tune. Just ordered up parts for the ADSR by the way, finely getting on the Kosmo train. :)

You should consider building a rotating 10 unit high decagon from those...that would look dope :)
