When you solo, you only get the chord as a reference. For example, on your chart, it says: solo and the chord symbol is C9. That is the only information you will get. So you have to think from the chord. If you want to play C lydian dominant, you think 'up a 5th' and play the melodic minor scale up a 5th which would be G melodic minor (which in turn gives you C lydian dominant). I suggest you click on the lesson link above where you will find all this explained in pretty simple terms.
Is this Chris Juergensen? if so my student just let me have your book because it was a bit over his head and to my surprise it is a superb book so far!!! I read most the beginning up to the spirit of guitar and it was late so i thumbed through the rest. But I am going to use this book for an infinite amount of applications and teaching concepts. thank you!!
This guy is so entertaining to watch and listen to. Its like "youse guys hit that dominant 7th and botta-bing youse got da sound down kaptchie?" Sort of a cross between Steve Vai and Bowser!
@chrisj64 sorry for my bad engish, in italian language is "esatonale" scale. "scala esatonale" in C is: C-D-E-F#-G#-A# (=Bb) obviously you know that. it has got 1 note only (G#) different by C lydian dominant (G) and 1 not less (A) thank you for the video!
Great lesson Chris! Quick question,...Does the 5 chord in the 2 5 1 progression have to be a flat 5 in order to use the lydian dominant scale? Is there a better scale idea if the 5 chord is standard?
@chrisj64 thanks! just started playing it, its a nice mode...abit confused though still cause i always thought lydian was a major mode, bet then i guess dominant is neither major nor minor, or maybe uim wrong. i dont know, i haven't studied much music theory
hi, great jam+vid.i undertstand a bit of theory, check out my songs, I use a few modes. i tried lydian dom b4, but i go for eerie sounds, didn't think of the obvious b7 chord! very jazzy.cool number 9.quick question.why and when does melodic minor come in? I think lydian dominant is a mode of melodic minor? so when you go back to melod min you are returnin to the 1 chord.? also...why does mel minor change shape descending? will the chords will change when descending? Appreciate your help thnks
marco escalante yes, it's balanced because of the #11. The 3rd and 4th in mixolydian don't get along as well as the 3rd and #4 in this scale. Dominant chords that resolve are generally altered chords so the altered scale works better
I feel when I get used to stuff I like it less that's what happened when I learnt Phrygian Dominant but I know what you mean about getting used to the intervals in you ear
Hi Chris! Is there a way to play an arpeggio over a dominant chord in other to play that b5 without playing the entire lydian dominant scale. I find arpeggios much more melodic than a scale. Hope it makes sense...For example i like to play the m7b5 arpeggio starting on the 3rd of a dominant chord.
Excellent. I play bass. Trying to integrate this. Thanks

Thanks! The book is still popular these days. Thanks for buying it. -CJ
Fantastica lezione ( wonderful lesson)
Thank you. Your explaination of "The Lydian Dominant Scale Mode" is far better than most because you explain the theory but then apply.

Sort of a cross between Steve Vai and Bowser!
could you say "Think up a 4th eg g melodic minor, up a 4th is c lydian dominant from there in the continued pattern on g melodic monor"
Great soloing.

thank you for the video!
you make the scale rad as hell holding the chord tones out.
wow this is really fun stuff.. I'm gonna pursue this - can you tell me a good place to get backing trax like this? MIDI perhaps?

Excellent !!! thx
@chrisj64 thank you again!
Nice lesson man, and well phrased soloing : )

im confused...whats the difference between melodic and harmonic minor??
(Facepalms) Melodic Minor is WAY better. It has a raised 6th. How can you confuse the two?
on 4:28 esatonal scale?
is there a reason why this scale works well over dom7 chords not resolving the the I chord?

it has the rad chord tones- namely that flat 7 and maj 3rd.

@chrisj64 i thought it was harminoc minor
very nice..very like scott henderson! cheers!
Ronojoy Barooah any other tips to sound like Scott?
Sushi, cigarettes and beer. Love it!
Great lesson. Thanks for sharing.
I love Lydian Dom.

Hi, Chris! Can you tell me if your "Infinite guitar" series books comes with audio files or cd? thank you!
Marcus Vinicius Silveira de Oliveira it doesn't come with audio files but I usually just have my students use iReal Pro for tracks.

"...like sushi or cigarettes or beer..." LOL
You forgot scotch.
Cool lesson.
@chrisj64 oh.. duh
dominant implies a major 3, no?
Victor Bingo dominant suggests 1, 3, 5, b7. Lydian suggests #11
yeah
sweeeeeeet
Hes right play over the 5 chord .
Thanks thanks thanks :) god!!!
By the way, this scale is indeed a lot like cigarettes.
hahaha you are so cool
WTF? Th links here take you to some online gambling BS.
Thanks for telling me. I’ll fix that. This lesson is so old that something strange must have happened to the links
@@chrisjuergensen love the lesson and track.
Cigarettes stink. Sushi is great though.
