- The Middle East's longest-ruling monarch, Oman’s Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said, has died aged 79.
Three days of mourning have been declared - and the process has begun to choose who will take over; Qaboos had no children and never publicly named a successor.
He was credited with modernising the Gulf country and mediating between rivals in a volatile region.
Al Jazeera's Rob Matheson looks back at his life.

if all middle eastern leaders would be like sultan Quaboos, having the welfare and social evolution of their people at heart, the middle east would be a different place.
It's not in the interest of big powers. Middle East is a paradise of resources that attracts foreign powers to interfere and exploit the resources at the cost of peace.

He tried to bring in regional peace, he clearly knew after the results of 2 wars against Israel. They aren't easy to be defeated. So he worked to bring peace in the region. Broker peace deals and avoid bloodshed.

I worked in Muscat in the year 1980 in Ruwi(Honda Junction).
And during that time, I got know that
SULTAN QABOOS was a benevolent sultan
and how he became the sultan.
At anytime in a particular day of the week, the Omanis
can go to the palace to request for assistance
from the sultan.
He was a not only a benevolent one, but one that
modernized OMAN.
Oman was (is) absolutely a beautiful, peaceful & MODERN country & a
very moderate one in term of religion.
He should be considered as in
HISTORY of OMAN as
the FOUNDER OF MODERN OMAN.
May ALLAH bless his soul & may OMAN continue his legacy.

If all governments in the Middle East had behaved as wisely and as good as that of the late Sultan of Oman, then the region would not be in the terrible mess that it has been for a long time. The legacy of the late Sultan Qaboos means that he has left his country a haven of peace and stability in a very turbulent region and it can only be hoped that his successor can carry on the good work that Sultan Qaboos did for his country and his people.

The only sensible leader in all of GCC... The man was a really honest person and he always made sure that his country was safe from idiotic Islamic clerics... I have heard from a family friend who was a part of the Royal Palace that he kept his own bed and even did his own chores.. That is not a normal Arab royalty behavior. He was humble. Perhaps the only man in modern history to overthrow his own father! Quite interesting he was never married nor had any child. Never naming a successor is also a bit odd, especially since he had health problems in his last days. A very interesting man he was or even mysterious. An only son, I wonder if he was also an only child, which might mean the complete end of the monarch. May he rest in peace.
