Her interpretation is timeless, because it is believable, grounded in kindness and willingness to be vulnerable and believe in love, even when it is entirely unexpected. I like others' versions but Ms. Cook's is the one that moves me.
Nobody sings it like her; There were and are many good sopranos singing this song Laura Benanti,Kelli O Hara,Judy Kuhn,Madeline Kahn,,Rebecca Luker ,Ruthie Henshell etc but she is the first and the best. She sang it from 1963 when she introduced this song till 2003 at 75 always singing the high B. Unique
This is as real as musical theater gets, which is very real indeed. In that world, people break out into song when prose fails them and break out into dance when gestures fail them. And as Barbara Cook shows us, break out the truth when lies fail them.
I'll never forget hearing her in this role, in out-of-town tryout (SHE LOVES ME) in Philadelphia. One of the best evenings of my theatre-going life. By marvelous coincidence I got to tell her so in person when I found myself shoulder-to-shoulder with her, exiting the NY PHil. performance of SWEENEY TODD. What a treasure she was. RIP. Ms Cook.
Great thanks for posting this incredible treat! I watch it every day. I just want to hug her after I watch this delight--it is my favorite rendition of her singing HER song! Also, that the audience really appreciates her performance adds to the joy! So charming, so very wonderful!!!
Simply thrilling. They don't make them like that anymore... BTW, do you know if there is any video footage at all of Barbara singing My White Knight, regardless of when or where?
This is so wonderful. Is there any other video of in the early days of her cabaret career? I saw her that Reno Sweeney during a newspaper strike. I wonder if that was during this engagement.

Nobody has even sung "Glitter and Be Gay" better than her, either. And the day she died I ate ice cream, of course.
