Just days after the death of Patrick Kavanagh, Diarmuid O’Muirithe talks to Kavanagh’s old friends about him in McDaid’s pub, Dublin.
The friends include Thomas McGowan, Tomas Toibin, Hayden Murphy and Dr. O’Riordain. Kavanagh had frequented McDaid’s pub where he mixed with locals and his literary peers.
A warm hearted individual and boyish in his humour.
One can feel his spirit still in this pub where he sat for many years. So much of his conversation has lived on...
This report is in Irish and English.

My friends tell me that Patrick Kavanagh’ was a Wildman, a good man who had a special way with words, I would have loved to have met Patrick and had a chat with him about farming, life and poetry. I would also like to meet that very fine, wise and fine spoken poet of a man who spoke his mind towards the end of this video, this man was/is also a rare one, his own words explained what a very outspoken man he was/is

There are qualities of imagination, emotion, expression and being which seem peculiar to Irish men. Industrialisation instrumentalised the working men of England - my country - and our souls, by and large, were never allowed to evolve unless we either left or retreated into our own inner worlds of escape; everything we do has to have a point.

Ahhhhh, Kavanagh, McQuaid's great friend. He always had a great welcome for himself.

I have heard first hands stories about him being a dirty old man, carry-on which would get any modern day celebrity 'cancelled'...
