How about: Don't mindlessly wander around the entry/exit to transition or the run finish after your race is done. I've occasionally had to dodge people from earlier waves who seemed to think that because they were done, the whole event was done and the could walk or stop and chat wherever they wanted.
I showed up super early to a race once to get a prime transition spot, and a half hour before race start someone showed up and tried to cram in next to me instead of setting up further back in the setup area where there was plenty of space. Show up early, or accept what you show up to.
Don’t simply blow your nose of green slimy moist snot unaware of other athletes near you. Happened to me when I was cycling during my 70.3, an old man infront of me blew his nose, snot splattered on my face and some even went into my mouth. Had to waste half of my water bottle just to clear it off and force myself not to throw up while cycling. It was very disturbing and disappointing.
I laughed out louder than I probably should have This happened to me once in those water parks - saw a fat loogie headed towards me in the lazy river. Couldn't avoid it in time.
That's why I like swimming in an Olympic swimming pool it's much better than a standard pool, and since I usually train alone it's safer than open water .sometimes I go in open water if lm with a group, but that's rare. Well guys take care and keep on training👍💪🤠🏊♂️🚴♂️🏃♂️🥋🏋️♂️
C sm, I am a sub-5 hours-Ironman biker. I have only one bike, my TT bike. Yes, I do not go for social rides too often, unless it is specified to be fast and long. However, there could be "half-serious cyclists" who simply do not like to buy more than what they need. Let's face it, number of cycles owned is not proportional to how good a cyclist one is!!
Do no sneak your way thru the starting line. If you are in a draft-legal tri, have the decency of rotating places so to share a bit of the wind breaking burden. Do not suck the wheels all the way up to T2. Also, do not mock slower bikers when passing by, they may overtake you in the running leg.
1. You can get multiple suits of the same type and size and rotate their usage. You also go there to train, not to parade, so if someone thinks you look "silly", let them. You should not care. 2. Find a club that does or just ride alone. You don't need a club to read a clock and a power meter. Considering drafting is illegal in Iron Man competitions, you might as well be better outside a cycling club as most groupies tend to draft in long rides. If you want to train, go on the bike you're going to race, if you want a more social ride, then normal road bike is OK. 3. This I do agree with. If the lake is dirty or you got "problems", better wear something that is not white :) 4. Yes, knowing the goal of each of your training sessions is important. 5. Transitions can be very hectic, but I do agree you should take care about the other's people equipment. 6. That is just being an asshole. Unintentional dunking can happen, or very close splashes. If the water is really dirty and you're caught by the "washing machine", events like these are almost unavoidable. 7. Disagree. Your body needs to know how to react in race equipment. Also aero helmets look really cool :).
If you are slow, stay on the right side and let people through, do not choose best starting group if your PB is slower. Every major running event is like a Giant slalom...
"Running back up the course with medal when finished" Cheering at the finish is great, but we know what psychological game you are playing when you run back as far as you can.
standing in the middle of the lane end is my pet hate and will lead to the person having 2 feet shoved off them while i tumble turn. Nothing wrong with the right kick set in the fast lane. ive seen plenty of guys do sub 1.30m/100m of kick.
john McLean so infuriating, I hate swimmers who pick a lane based on their ego and not their lap speed, slow recreational breast strokers in the fast lane drive me nuts.
Well, why so many conformity rules? I have no problems with others looking stupid or it is rather my opinion that they do. Why not wear an aero helmet or use the tri-bike? Some may only have one bike ... Most rules have two sides.
The bike thing is a safety thing. It's not safe to ride in a close group on a time trial bike. MOST bike clubs don't allow you to ride one on club rides
Someone gave my rear derailleur a nasty punch in T1 when taking out his bike after the swim... It made me end the race after 7k and repair costs over 200€.. So don't be a T1 *sshole, please!!
As I am new to triathlon, this was a very informative video for me! Some of those rules, especially the ones regarding biking, were actually new to me. Glad I found out about them on this way before I made them :D Big like from me :)
Comparing group training to your previous races. "Oh man if this was the [race you were in last season] I would have taken this hill in a much lower gear!" "At [race name] the water conditions were way worse than this, you all can't complain!"
I fully agree on the dunking part. Freaking dangerous and can get someone with water anxiety killed. Just don't do onto others what you don't want others to do unto you.
Guys, I love the channel but why are you so obsessed with what the guys at your club think about you using your gear? If they have a problem with it, then perhaps they’re not quite in tune with the “supportive nature” the triathlon community likes to boast about? I, for instance, am a fat knacker trying to get my useless, round self in shape and have recently donned the Lycra for my rides. It’s not because I think it looks cool, or improves my aerodynamics, it’s because it’s comfortable and prevents my perineum from chafing into dust. If I hear any comments at a club about how stupid I look, they’ll be referred to a mirror. Nobody’s winning any trophies for style with what looks like half a nappy shoved up your crack. Wear what you want, ride what you want.
When riding in a pack you don't have the same aero, speed and areoposition/breaking transition. This is a danger for you and the other riders with you as you can't keep formation!
@@r4Ynethics but how does that make any sense...i mean on race day you are cycling with alot of people...I dont think thats the right moment to try out a bike which takes longer to use the brakes...is it not better to use the bike with friends and just be aware of each other...
I did my first Try-a-Tri this year. My race No. was 273. It was only when I arrived in T1 that I realised I had racked my bike in space 278 by accident!
I am brand new to training with Triathlons and there is a cycling shop near me that does group rides on Wednesday that I am super excited to do. I wound up buying a used try bike with the Aero Bars and it's the only one that I have. Why is it considered bad to ride one in a group ride / should I just not go to the group ride so they don't hate me?
A lot of groups/clubs don’t allow TT bikes at all, but if it’s a pretty informal and small group, and you agree to not get on the aero bars, they might be comfortable riding with you. Otherwise, it’s not uncommon to get a cheap road bike for training.
At my local running track, the rule is all about 'effort'. If you are 'on your effort' i.e. going as fast as you can, then you are perfectly ok to use the inside lane, even if you are relatively slow. Faster runners should pull out to overtake you. The error would be to 'jog' in the inside lane and get in the way of other runners who are running as fast as they can on their 'effort'. It generally works quite well, but not sure if it is a universal rule. As in all things, a bit of consideration and courtesy goes a long way
Indeed - repeats in lane one (especially anything longer than a 400, as the stagger doesn't work out so well), but active rest jogging/warmup/cool down in the infield or lane 6/8, no matter how fast or slow you think you are.
Meh. Stay courteous, even when you are busting your butt on a hard interval. It's not that difficult to navigate a mini-slalom course around them. It's all good and they are out probably busting their butts too instead of sitting on rockers at home.
I use the rule if I am running for time over a specific distance I can use the inside lane. If I am running for time only and the distance is of no concern than I run in an outer lane. Most slow runners and certainly most walkers are only on the track for a set length of time and distance does not matter so they should be in an outer lane.
The only rule I disagree with is wearing the aero helmet on TT training rides. When I wear my road bike helmet and sunglasses I can’t really see when I’m in aero. So, I choose to wear the aero helmet. 😎
The no dunking should be stressed more. I have lost my WEDDING RING and had my eye gouged during a sprint, not to mention bruised back during an IM5150. Some guys take it way too serious!
I know that look at 3:22 - that's the look of someone who's a bit of a control freak (like me) and really, reaaallyyyy doesn't want their stuff in places they didn't put it, otherwise head might go a little boom! I feel you haha.
Your 7 unwritten rules cracked me up. So true. Keep them coming. Also, I HATE when I over take a rider and they speed up just as I get past their front wheel. I see and hear this quite a bit from women who over take a guy. Guy cant stand to be passed by a woman. Shoot, I get passed quite a bit by women, they are the studs for sure in my book.
I think enough cannot be said about swimming etiquette during a open water swim and triathlon swim. I have experienced the worst from scratches to fists on the back without any action taken by officials. Marshals are quick to point out drafting on bikes etc but nothing during swims. show some swimming etiquette for those idiots who don't know how to swim in open water or races.
Racing Ironman for a number of years all the way up to Kona level, I have to say these rules are pretentious, even though I follow them too. I don't wear my tri suit to run, or aero gear to train ,etc. But if someone choose to wear it...why do we care? It's not hurting anyone else. The other suggestions about not moving other people's stuff in transition are in fact written in the rules if I am not mistaken? I know you are both tri insiders...I think you can come up with more interesting content then this very generic list.
Also, why the hell would anyone care the slightest if you wear an aero helmet during training? I mean unless, it's blocking out all noise so that you can't chit-chat then that's understandable. But otherwise I just don't see why that should be an unwritten rule.
hey guys! I'm wondering if you have any tips about running "downhills"... I run for quite some time now and I'm getting fairly efficient on flats and uphills with some tips I learned with you and watching Patrick Lange running :D, but don't know why I struggle so much when the grade goes down, it's like my core muscles get turned off or my balance disappears... help! btw love the channel! learning a lot and getting inspired! cheers!
Bruno Vasco focus on controling your body, leaning forward, and just let the hill speed you up. your turnover (left foot right foot left right...) should naturally speed up if you resist the urge to take massive strides, which can drive a lot of impact thru your legs. this isnt science, well it might be, but im just speaking from personal experience and hearsay.
8 - swimming competition should not end with starting road racing. 9 - road racing should not end with marathon run. 10 - pentathlon lasts few days with recovery time between the rounds, so shall be tri-
Triathlon- by far the best sport with the biggest disparity to the worst culture. Triathlon or competitive CrossFit are a close tie. GTN you guys are awesome but just being honest about the general culture. Too many rich pricks that couldn’t make the varsity team growing up 😂😂.
I don't agree with the aero helmet and TT bike comments in this video. Not all of us can afford two bikes and I think you should train as you race. If you are planning to wear an aero helmet on your race day, why not wear it for the training sessions? It would be silly wearing it on the trainer, yes, but why not for a club ride? We train with other riders and never made anybody feel bad about showing up with a TT bike, aero helmet or for wearing a full tri-suite. If you get ridiculed for it, you might as well find a nicer set of people to train with.
Naw, baby, naw! The only "road bike" I own is a tri/time-trial bike with aero bars (and I will lean forward and use forward controls all I want). If the group can't keep up, then they do not need to train with me! Okay....this is probably why I ride alone :(
HNX Media it's not about keeping up, it's about safety. Your hands are far from the breaks + you have less control. If something happens you cannot react quickly enough.
Totally 100% agree with you. I was just trying to be funny. Safety first, ESPECIALLY in a group. Hurt myself, fine. Hurt others, unforgivable. Ride safe, my friend. Namaste!
you can't write an un-written rule in the comments as it then becomes a written rule. only joking. hate it on road rides when people dangerously overtake then immediately turn off. Not sure if it's a rule tho
It said that “Don’t wear aero helmet on training ride.” But I like aero helmet and if I wear only for race day, $100+ helmet end up using only once or twice a year!! Triathlon is money costing than other sports!!
Is the "no TT bikes on club rides" rule a UK thing? It definitely seems reasonable if everyone else is riding their road bike, but I can't think of any tri club I've seen here in Western Australia that DOESN'T ride TTs for club rides
Interesting. In the US, on my group ride, TRI bikes and/or aero bars are discouraged. This is because in a tight pace line, being aero is dangerous. Hands need to be right near the brakes at all times. TRI bikes are intended for riding alone. That's why they're aero!
In my eyes it's a safety issue. Riding your TT bike on a club ride might be ok, but riding it in the aero bars is definitely a no-go! You have much less control over your bike (unless you are Sebastian Kienle); thinking of crosswinds, controlling the distance to the rider in front of you, avoiding road hazards or reaching for your water bottle. And speaking of water bottles: pls. make sure your BTS bottles are safe from being ejected when riding on a rough road.
No valuable advice whatsoever. You come up a bit like airheads with petty fixations on what is proper an what is not. Do not wear white! You will look silly with an airstream helmet! Use different clothes! Precious.
Oh god. My regular swimsuit looks like a trisuit because it has longer legs. I probably look like a complete loser at every swim. I need to buy a new swimsuit.
The no white suit rule is silly since white reflects more light, thus keeping you cooler than black which absorbs all light for instance, and the difference is quite significant. Torbjorn Sindballe used to use full suits to help him with heat dispersion for this reason. Next best colour is yellow but it's far less effective than white... That is a reason I won't be getting a GTN kit except if there's a winter kit available, black is predominant on it, which is a bad idea even if it might look cool.
How about: Don't mindlessly wander around the entry/exit to transition or the run finish after your race is done. I've occasionally had to dodge people from earlier waves who seemed to think that because they were done, the whole event was done and the could walk or stop and chat wherever they wanted.

You should immediately switch sports from triathlon to UFC

So unfortunate. But good tips
Playing this in my head itself made me barf!! Will keep this in mind.
yup! completely agree, same thing applies to pool swimming when people are around (also spitting)
Kevin Liang a kick at him while passing him would have been understandable. Not saying it’s right. But I’d understand.
You forgot an important one: don’t train in open water alone. And if you must, stay close to shore, wear a colourful swimcap and maybe a buoy.
Thank you!
Good point. Buoy is a must have for OWS
Why not? I always train in open water alone, I do have a buoy
Bollocks. I love training at the beach and always on my own and sometimes in the dark !
So you should own two very expensive bikes?
Got it.
yogibear6363 have you already witnessed a triathlon? All the bikes over there are like that's. They are expensive but worth jt
The appropriate number (n) of bikes to own is n+1
Let's face it, if you are even a half serious cyclist, you already have several bikes. You just can't break your heart by selling the older ones.
C sm, I am a sub-5 hours-Ironman biker. I have only one bike, my TT bike. Yes, I do not go for social rides too often, unless it is specified to be fast and long. However, there could be "half-serious cyclists" who simply do not like to buy more than what they need.

Nah. I got a nice traditional tri bike with rounded tubes and aero bars. Really nice.

Something about this video... I think you guys have hit a nice, comfy groove and tone for the channel, and look much more at home... Great work!
Pierre Fitter I was thinking the same thing. This was a both informative AND pretty entertaining!
"Running back up the course with medal when finished"
Cheering at the finish is great, but we know what psychological game you are playing when you run back as far as you can.
Sounds like no one has ever come to run in with you during the last leg of a tough race.
Don’t take selfies in the transition area 🤬
mrgq1979 what if your the first person there?
Ron Bradshaw you definitely can...just not in the middle of T2, LOL
Do you mean pre race or doing race?
John P. Argueta during 🤬
People take selfies... during...??? wtf lol
Love how the set you guys have is increasing with more and more Tri stuff :)
TIL : Triathlon community is very conservative
Politically?

Bruno Vasco Check out Kilian Jornets downhill technique. He is a trail runner but it still helps
I love this
8 - swimming competition should not end with starting road racing.
9 - road racing should not end with marathon run.
10 - pentathlon lasts few days with recovery time between the rounds, so shall be tri-
Transition zone etiquette is non existent in Miami Florida
What? No aero helmet?
Triathlon- by far the best sport with the biggest disparity to the worst culture. Triathlon or competitive CrossFit are a close tie. GTN you guys are awesome but just being honest about the general culture. Too many rich pricks that couldn’t make the varsity team growing up 😂😂.
Can someone explain the "No TT Bikes/Aerobars" on club ride rule? Why is this considered faux pas?
Don’t wear your Ironman branded kit 24/7
Great!
No dunking....unless someone starts backstroking while using you for sighting and zig-zagging. Then dunk them!
Namaste!
HNX Media you took the words right out of my mouth. I love the sport- just hate all the elitists that are part of it. Try Lone Wolf society on Strava.
you can't write an un-written rule in the comments as it then becomes a written rule. only joking. hate it on road rides when people dangerously overtake then immediately turn off. Not sure if it's a rule tho
amazing info... Felipe Pacheco from Brazil....
Joshua Galvin Think it indeed applies more to doing club rides with cyclists
Joshua Galvin this rule is meant for regular cycling club
The guy is wearing an aero helmet in the no aero one.
So t wear white in case you crap yourself? This happens!?
Hi
Bye
No valuable advice whatsoever. You come up a bit like airheads with petty fixations on what is proper an what is not. Do not wear white! You will look silly with an airstream helmet! Use different clothes! Precious.
This was all rich people shit. Worried about which bike you bring smh
Individul sport means no rules!
DONT USE DIRTY SHOES ON RACE DAY!!!!!
Btw I would add, if you're concerned about white getting semi-transparent, remember you will have your race number in front of your private parts...
Some of these rules is why I don't join a club.
Bring careful about wearing or not wearing cleats with hobby riders
Don't switch from freestyle to breaststroke in an open water swim. getting kicked in the face when overtaking a slower swimmer isn't fun.
just witness this last week with a swimmer in front of me.. stay out of the way too if you are one that loves to switch between strokes
Farting on a group ride anyone?
🤢🤢🤢
Silly unwritten rules.......
Rule #1...don't.
If you pee in your wetsuit at the pre start line area at least have the common decency to kick some sand over it
Good thing I always carry some pocket sand
simply not taking up too much space at the bike racks. Really awful to see someone who has taken up half the rack. Newbie move.
The worst must be spiting , its a filthy habit here in South Africa..please NO...
Steal nutrition off of another competitors bike.
Haha :D
Don't be a pretentious triathle telling people pretentious triathlon rules.
