  • Learn the secret to knitting a hat in the round on circular needles from start to finish! No switching to double pointed needles is required! [Instruction starts at 2:57]. Consider relaxing your tension as you come to the top of the hat, it is easy to hold the needles and yarn very tightly as you finish the last round - go gently instead!
    Please see this blog post for additional tips on not switching to double-pointed needles:
    www.waterknyt.com/2019/11/kni...
    Note on the yarn and pattern in the video: The yarn was a hand-dyed offering from Blind Buck Farm called "Flag Blue", and may no longer be available. The pattern was created for the yarn and is no longer available.
    I have plenty of other patterns for you:

      That is so awesome! It is a bit unnerving making these videos (I really enjoy sharing knowledge as someone self-taught for the most part, but still feel a bit unschooled/nervous as a "media maven", lol), and your comment has made my day! It makes the process of putting a video out there for the world worthwhile. I'm so glad you got some use out of what I shared. I HATE DPNs! With a flaming passion. And I predominantly knit in the round (I make a lot of hats), so this video has saved me from the pain of switching to DPNs at the decrease section of my hats. While watching it, I was like "Oh, DUH! Of course you can pull out the extra cable!" Thank you, Wendy!
    BTW - I use ChiaoGoo Twist Red Lace needles, which are insanely flexible and don't have a cable "memory" like other brands do (they won't get permanently bent out of shape) so they will be perfect for this method. :)

    How do you avoid the stitches from getting stretched out where the cord is sticking out? Have been struggling with this trying to close on the round

    • @Waterknyt
      @Waterknyt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there Coral,
      Some tips are to ensure you have a very flexible cord, keep your tension loose and aim for natural fibers, especially wool which has inherent coil/spring. Some stitches may stretch and wet blocking will help even out the fabric. I address some more tips in a blog post: wendyannlindquist.blogspot.com/2019/11/knitting-secrets-no-dpn-required.html
      All the best to you and keep knitting with a smile,

      So glad this video may be of some help to you. If you do opt for dpns, go for tighter tension, that's how I manage them when knitting socks, where I definitely prefer dpns (in my case, I like them for speed)..when I knit loosely with dpns it is much more difficult to me.

    • @Waterknyt
      @Waterknyt  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Round knitting on circular needles creates a tube, there is the outside and the inside of the tube shape. Alternately, you can knit back and forth on circular needles the same way you would with straight needles or dpns. Vogue knitting has an article on the basics of circular knitting here: www.vogueknitting.com/pattern_help/how-to/beyond_the_basics/circular_needles

    I tried using this method with 12 stitches decreasing to 6 stitches and it was quite difficult using the circular needles. I don't have DPN yet so I trudged away with what I had. My stitches were spaced out at the top so it didn't turn out right even after cinching.

    • @Waterknyt
      @Waterknyt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there, thank you for the feedback on how things went. I regret your results did not turn out the way you wanted. Some considerations that come to mind would be the tension when holding the yarn, gauge of stitches per inch, yarn type/color and flexibility in the circular cord. Before I detail those, you might want to try the following: if you have another circular needle in the same or one size up or down, you could do the decreases two circulars in lieu of dpns. The Berroco yarn blog has a nice tutorial on that method: blog.berroco.com/2013/08/13/emily-explains-knitting-with-two-circular-needles/
      For the possible reasons the method in this video didn't work to your standards (which I'm sure are great and all knitters like their efforts to come out fantastic considering the time we put into these projects), a loose tension and more relaxed stitches help, as noted in the video description. Another help when reducing to a small number with this method is the yarn, a bulkier/fuzzier yarn will be more forgiving than a fine, silky, or superwash yarn, as would a darker color. Lastly the flexibility and length of the cord would be a factor, with the greater flex and length assets in this method.
      Sometimes when I finish a hat with this and it is obvious my yarn was pulled too much in the process, I adjust the yarn by sewing up tightly on the wrong side when I weave in the end and giving a final help with steam or wet blocking.
      I hope you'll give this method a try again on a different project and wish you all the best!
      Knit happy, Wendy Ann

      @Waterknyt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NOTE: Berroco's method is general on knitting with two circs, not specific to decreases

    • @jmearabe3
      @jmearabe3 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you for the advice. I was using a shorter circular and after watching other you tube videos it seems a longer circular would have been better? but the hat was a tester and my first hat and also I think the pattern and the you tube video that accompanied the pattern were conflicting. the written pattern ended with 12 stitches but the video ended with 6 stitches so I was confused and tried going down to 6 stitches. I wonder now if the 12 stitches would have been OK.

    • @Waterknyt
      @Waterknyt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Twelve stitches might have been fine, I have some hat patterns that end with even more than 12, (see "Genesis Hat" on Ravelry.com under my name as an example of a hat knit with a light worsted weight that ends with 18 stitches ). Have fun with your knitting adventures!

    Can I use this to decrease on any hat? Particularly a sweet pea?

    • @Waterknyt
      @Waterknyt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kristen, great question! If your hat is knit in the round and you have a flexible knitting cord on your circular needles, the conditions sound to be right on target to use this technique. Some sweet pea hats have an i-cord at the top, which can be completed with a circular needle. Let us know how it works for you!

      Kristen, You are so very welcome! It is often a matter of experimentation, and what works for you is what you should go with! Many of the techniques I embrace are a result of using my intuition to move forward with a project. • @Waterknyt

      Hi Serap, glad you find the video helpful. The magic loop technique I am aware of uses a very long circular needle (often 32" or 40") to work a small knitting circumference. It is similar to this technique, but here you use a 16" circular needle.

      @@Waterknyt THANK YOU I HAVE USED YOUR TECHNIQUE. BUT 😔NOT TO THE END I COULD NOT !! WHEN SOME 8 STITCHES LEFT I TOOK THEM OUT OF THE NEEDLE AND GATHERED THEM USING YARN SEWING NEEDLE (THROUGH THE STITCHES). ❤️❤️❤️💐🌹💐

      @@serapugurlugil9214 That's fantastic! 6 - 10 remaining stitches at the end is about average! [Instructional Note: Cut a long tail of yarn, and using a blunt-tip yarn needle, thread the yarn through the remaining stitches. Remove the needle, bring the yarn to the inside of the hat and pull tightly. Weave in the yarn end and you're done!] Sounds like you did it perfectly!👍🎆🎆🎆
