PBS Newshour did a story on discrimination faced by some women in country music, seeking to be signed with a record deal as a singer-songwriter, being told, they cannot sign her now, they already have a female singer-songwriter under contract. I know this is a stretch, but the above kinda reminded me of the early days of women in television news, after graduating with honors with a degree in journalism, to be hired as a cub reporter, required certain appearance adjustments, false eyelashes, pouting red lips and most of all, streaking blond dyed hair, and in some extreme cases, a straight haired wig, may seem like an exaggeration, but are you sure?

Let’s say one of the all-news cable networks, or even one of your local stations has on staff an over sixty-year-old gray-haired woman with distinguished journalistic skills, it’s a given, you will never see her. However, what you will see, and often, are streaking blond hair dyed women with clownish red painted lips. It seems some viewer managers think we as consumers of news would rather see a displayed pimped-up woman in place of my sixty-year-old described above journalists.
