@@bombaexplodeza1377 Joseph Alessi is an amazing musician but he couldn't do what Frank Rosolino did. I heard him try to do jazz improvisation and it sounded like dog shit. Alessi is primarily a classical musician.

Rosolino was one fantastic trombonist, 4 sure and one my all-time favorites. but even with that in mind I wouldn't say he's the best to grace the earth. all of us will eventually hear someone who strikes us that way, but there are so many we'll never hear.

Frank had a very articulated, arpeggiated, almost "choppy" style, to be sure. But his lyricism didn't really come close to Carl Fontana's and Bill Watrous's IMHO. Watrous certainly gigged with Rosolino to good effect and certainly learned from him, but Watrous had a sweet, syrupy style that Rosolino did not have. Fontana also had a very doodly style that Watrous emulated. Definitely interesting how they all learned from each other. And how they're different at the same time.

Frank was the best! Never heard another trombonist with his technical skill, huge range, and melodic beauty. Thumbs up to you Paul The Trombonist from a past T-bone player that hasn't played since 2005 due to a bunch of physical crap. Well, I think I'm ready to try playing again; My restored 1935 Bach model 6 is lonesome in the case, and I have music inside of me that needs to get out.

@@jangunnarolsen5946Rosolino was the best; Fontana and Winding were great, the others you mentioned had their moments. Other than Rosolino; Trummy Young , and Juan Tizol are the ones that rank above the rest for me.

We all have to acknowledge this man's talent, at the very least. Even if you don't emulate him in your playing, you have to realize that this is STILL a very high-level of musicianship. Rossolino had an incredibly secure upper range.... it catches my ear by surprise because I'm so fixed on his dexterity and clarity on trombone!

What strikes me also: the way he sings in 'Please don't bug me' is so similar to the way he plays in on the trombone (clear, fast articulation, bending notes etc). What a fenomenal trombone player and what a performer. He truly is my favorite jazz trombonist of all times.

Jazz Scene USA was clearly the best format for presenting the jazz talents in our country. This program featuring Frank Rosolino shows what an outstanding musician he was. At this time of his career, he could be seen every evening on the Steve Allen Show as he was an integral of the band that was led by pianist Don Trenner. Frank also played some hilarious parts in the skits that were part of this program. He led a "commando attack" on the Hollywood Ranch Market which was across the street from Steve's studio.

You know what's really crazy...I don't care at all. He's a mf'er of a trombone player. The greatest.

Dude is good but it strikes me as odd that nobody tempers their love just a tad bit

He died tragically, way too soon.

Rosolino....moves me through the black and the white...slides me up and down....brass and steel...smokey streets...New York....and Atom Bombs.....junk in the arm and blues on the sleeve. Rosolino.....where is your moody blues shoes? At the end of a shotgun...blood on the bed...and blood in my head. Rosolino....the bell tolls and yet ...you...blow...on.

A pure master of his chosen instrument the trombone ..Such a tragic life ....
On November 26, 1978, Rosolino shot both of his sons as they slept. One died instantly; the other survived, but was blinded. Rosolino shot himself in the head immediately after shooting his sons and died.

Despite his end, he’s a human being like us, his vains had blood, like ours do. Jesus teach us to love men as he loved us. I am sure God forgave him. And he’s probably in purgatory. (i’m catholic)
    Blessings y’all 🎺

I'm not catholic, but I pray there is a purgatory because of his drug use. I'll always think his wife shot him and the boys and then gassed herself. No, I'll never believe Frank would shoot his sons.

    ロソリーノはまさにヴァーテュオーゾ。だが…ジャズに於いてJJよりも扱いが下。ずっと釈然としない。

He had a way of playing quick ideas without sounding like a tenor player trapped in a bone player’s body
