My BM Bass/Bluegill pond is LOADED with crawfish and I know most them feeds on craw all the time. So throwing a craw style lure is almost useless because they are SICK of crawfish lol. I'll throw a perch crankbait and they smash it hard even though they NEVER seen a perch before. Some fish just want to try something new and sick of the same old meal everyday. Especially on really hot days, they love trying new stuff.
Matt Stefan just put out a similar video yesterday about how matching the hatch is a myth. He was comparing crawdad lures though. I agree though. If match the hatch was the be all end all then everyone would be throwing and winning tournaments using Live Target lures.
It's basic bass behavior. Bass have a tendency to be territorial. Eating whatever fits in their mouth. As apposed to walleye. That follow food around main lake basins
Randy, thankyou for the insight on both light and water clarity effect on lure color and perch patterns. I hope I can retain all the knowledge you're slinging our way. Thanks again for the videos!
I agree. The action of the lure means more than color 100%. Bass dont see color like we do, so lures that we think look super realistic may not look as good to the fish. IMO color is important solely for visibility based on water clarity and sunlight intensity. For reaction strikes, the fish dont have time to study the lure anyway. Its a natural reflex for them.
The bass in my clear lake have perch in their bellies, but I've never caught one on my perch Rapala. I do catch them on my white/chartreuse spinnerbaits and Heddon Torpedoes.
Me being a primary pond fisherman in Kentucky, 90% of my lures are perch color and I hammer them. The only thing that doesn’t work for me that’s a perch pattern is a crank bait, everything else, from a swim bait, so a swim jig and a chatterbait I hammer them with perch patterns. Even the glide baits I throw are perch patterns. Now I don’t know if it’s because I’m fishing a pond and not a lake is the reason why I have so much luck on perch patterns, but I do.
Randy what you're saying is true but matching with the bass are eating at the time you're out there fishing is a golden rule for instance trout fishing in rivers good old pot skis balls of fire versus Rock flies and hellgrammites and for instance why does a shad pattern on a wiggle wart make a difference between a crawdad pattern on a wiggle wart what about the many colors of the in bodies are you fishing for what you know good and well it makes a difference maybe subtle but it makes a difference
Great information. My lakes don’t really have perch as far as I know. We have shad, bluegill, some crawfish and frogs. For this reason, I have never purchased any baits in the perch patterns and colors. But, now I will give that color/pattern a try. Also, I have always avoided lures in “Baby Bass” colors and patterns. My intuitive mind has always thought, “Why would a Largemouth or Spotted Bass” hunt, eat and be a cannibal to its very own species? It just doesn’t make sense. There should be no reason to cast a lure in a bass pattern. But now, the various lure patterns are created to be visual signals to bass.
You use what works ,I don't argue with the bass. Let the bass tell you what they want! Perch works because that's what it wants, da. Don't try to figure it out !
This is one of the rare times I'm going to disagree with Randy . As the sun gets up I switch to more transluscent type of bluegill /perch colors and it often keeps that bite going as I usually fish in clear or even very clear water . Lucky craft is one company that has a very nice selection of ghost gill / perch patterns in many of their hardbaits.
Now this is an advanced bass class, straight to the juice, less than 10 minutes, what most people are looking for!
Good job on this one!

How bout a plumb colored plastic worm? It doesn’t look like anything that swims.

Why do bass bite a bubblegum floating worm? Nothing looks like it.
I have never really done any good on perch pattern. Jerkbaits or that big swimbait. Never caught a fish on either one.
Sometimes the more real it looks to us, it looks more fake to the bass. Matching is more than just a look or color.- but the look can definitely help.
I've never caught a bass on a Perch colored bait including a jerkbait. Worst color!
Opposite for me!
