    Nice one 👍🏽.
Just happened to see this today and goes along the same lines.

The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.

Acceptance was one of the big things I got out of my Instagram journey as it was the first time I looked at my self as a Stroke Survivor. You no have to accept where you are before you can move forward. And just keep swimming.

Thank you for sharing this! I am pinning this comment. FYI, you are part of my inspiration when I think of the people I witness who are "successful". I am sure it is not easy to work as hard as you do every day. Your mindset MUST be your secret weapon. :) Thanks for inspiring me and all of your followers.

Great Video. I fall into this category. Pryor to my stroke my A1c has been around a 12 for several years and I was about 50lbs overweight and had high blood pressure for most of my life, along with bad eating and drinking. I told my family and love ones that I put myself in this situation and I have to get myself out of this situation. I changed my eating habits, my A1C is around 7, I've lost about 40 pounds and I stopped drinking alcohol. My recovery is going very well, It's been about 16 months since my stroke. I'm 44 and I wasn't prepared to go back to my parents house or my grandparents house and lay around the house feeling sorry for myself. I took full responsibility of what happened to myself. Not only did I go back to work but I also received 2 promotions and running the company when they were prepared for me to go home on disability for the rest of my life. I may never be 100% but I'm going to get as close to it as possible

Family, friends and caregivers can also have an effect on our belief in recovery. Be thoughtful of what you say around folks recovering. (My loving dad "protected" mom by telling everyone they met that she couldn't speak, so she kept her mouth shut. 6 years later he passed and slowly she began to speak)

The episode was a great one.
I have ALS and it's not easy. There is so much negativity around me. I call ALS the hopeless disease. No ever give me any hope of a long survival.
Every ounce of determination has to come from within.
I enjoy stories that despite the odds a person can go on to greatness.
    Thank you for the inspiration.

SPOT ON. She is my favorite therapist to listen too and watch. She has helped me get through so much without even knowing me. I had a spinal cord injury 3 years ago and have hyperspasticity and nerve damage that required me to learn how to walk.. not knowing what caused it is the worse.. I was a 4 sport athlete so we assume it was from years ago and took time to affect me.. this video came at the right time because I've tried and tried to positive and was about to give up.. getting my mindset back on track. I've recently had a lot of bitterness and anger. Thoughts of Why did this happen to me? It doesn't matter why, just keep pushing through it. Too much progress to give up even though I've recently went backwards a few steps. Nothing has ever stopped me before even if I failed a few times at it.

    Dear Dr. Tobias
I want to say a big thank you for your videos. I am from Greece my mother had a massive srtoke 2 months ago in her left side of the brain. She is in a rehab centre. She has right side paralysis and she cannot speak but she is trying to (actually she is speaking her own language “nia nia nia”)She has shown the main progress in understanding. It’s been one week that sometimes she feels sad , probably now she realises what happened to her.Your videos are so encouraging and helpful as noone of her doctors has given to me such guidance. And unfortunately in my country we are not so specialised in strokes. I wanna help my mother with everything I have. I am amazed of those information you provide to us. I will try to encourage following your advices. I am determined . Thank you again and again

Very helpful. You do a great job of describing the thoughts and feelings that stroke victims have. This lets the victim know that you’re talking specifically about them. Since they know that you truly understand, they know that the advice you give applies specifically to them. This makes them motivated to follow the advice. They don’t put the advice in the category of “that will never work for me” or “that’s not my situation”.

I was a traditional artist and sign painter before my stroke; I was also left handed; unfortunately the stroke left my left side paralyzed. I constantly dream about doing art with my left hand again; so for now, my art is digital and right handed. I keep telling myself that I will someday use my left hand again. Sadly my stroke was pretty severe and the left arm is barely moving at all. One of my dreams is to just hold a pencil with my left hand. I may not know when, but I will.

Keep at it! If you have to strap that device to your hand do that. It might also help to start with a digital notebook. I am sure there are apps to make the pen more or less sensitive. Unfortunately I do not have one but you might want to look into that.

You will! My right side was effected and within a 7 month period, I have taught myself to write. I’m quite slow. It’s not as beautiful as my former penmanship…. but I’m too grateful to compare it! I am now teaching myself to type…. which is challenging due to spasticity. I have every intention on accomplishing this goal in order to get back to writing books. I am copyrighted but not published. We can do all things we make a conscious decision to do. In time! Infinite love and healing energy to you!💗

Nothing said here really "stood out", yet it was spot on. Sure, those of us attempting rehab will face disappointment/depression (I've been there), yet after 13 years post my last TBI, I still strive to make my body as functional as possible because I don't care to settle for less than I realistically could, nor do I fancy succumbing to self-pity.

Thank you for addressing these issues! I try to keep a positive attitude about my recovery. My stroke was 8/11/20, I can walk without a cane, but sometimes it is scary for me. The spasticity kicks in and I lose my balance. My arm is back 100%. I am back at work full time and can drive. I live on my own again! I have so much to be grateful for! I have been asked to be part of a study on the effects of treadmill walking for stroke victims. I feel like this will benefit me tremendously and help with the spasticity. I have to keep pushing and can’t give up until I am my best. I get tired sometimes, so I take it a notch back until I feel ready to push on. This journey has taught me a lot about myself. My neurosurgeon told my daughter I would never walk. She refused to tell me until I was walking. So glad she didn’t!

Thank you for your openness and honesty. You’re absolutely correct. Mindfulness and self awareness is vital! Mindset regarding the health event is EVERYTHING! Ones who believe they can heal usually do. Ones who are hopelessly complainers and lack the self consciousness and responsibility usually don’t. You are the co-creating energy in your own reality. So will you succumb or overcome? I am an overcomer! I am sending infinite love, light, innerStanding, supportive, and healing energy to all who are navigating through any challenges in this moment. Nothing stays the same. Change is inevitable. Cry, shout, journal, make voice recordings…. Whatever you need to get you through. Then meditate, trust, and MOVE!!! No one is coming to save you! You are your own responsibility!💗💗💗🦋🦋🦋

Initially after stroke, I was very confused. Therapists were instrumental in getting me started on recovery. However, it is very important to take charge of your own recovery at some point, earlier the better. Only you can recover to the extent you want. Repeating exercises/stretches the number of times necessary to gain function is far beyond a service person's call of duty. Also the breadth of your rehab will expand. 5 years since my stroke and I still find muscles that I haven't awakened and worked on. That is where online content sources like this channel help me continue my recovery.

It's all about the attitude. Initially, it took months to realize exactly the scope of the full extent of my hemorrhagic stroke and what that meant, but once I began to understand more clearly what I was dealing with, I then started to work within the parameters of my new 'reality'. Instead of recovery, I have begun to use the term 'discovery'. This helps give a positive and motivational focus to my daily tasks and home therapies. Also, the information shared on this channel is invaluable.

Great video and while it's raw for some people to hear, it's true as my neurologist also said the same thing. I'm 5 years post stroke due to a pfo (hole) in my heart. I was extremely fit and 38 years old age when it happened. 6 weeks in state rehabilitation and I'm walking pretty good, the arm and hand is slower to recover as I was told it would be. I have worked my arse off to recover because I believe I will be able to use my hand again one day and return to work. Don't ever give up !! 🇦🇺💪

to move on from something like a stroke, you have to accept that it happened. even a small stroke is a life changing event. the main thing is to know your new limitations. you can build beyond them, but you can't ignore something that can easily cau massive issues if ignored.

I saw a personal trainer yt and she had a mantra which was "sensory first and then motor". She used a massage gun on her arms and legs before her workout. Would that be a good thing to do for people with neuropathy to wake up the nerves before doing exercises? For example I have CMT and I'm beginning to get foot drop due to neuropathy would the stimulation from a massage gun help to activate the nerves for improved motor function?

Doctor Tobias i was always in a good shape, before mine stem stroke. I have been destroyed by my own success. because i was a healthy person, and watched my food and was every week, at the gym. My goal was then only that stay healthy and see my son grow up, and his choices the he willl make in his life. After my stemcel therapy in Germany, i accept my life is now. Now my goal is to walk again and that is why i watch every week your program. Now i only uses blood thinners( xarelto 10 gr,) because the docters here, they don't want to take any risk because I had a pulmonary embolism.

I feel I am holding myself back because of risk adversity. Do you have advice on pushing through reticence to try? I mean there's a fine line between taking unnecessary risks and complete risk advoidance. It's not blame, or victimhood but self confidence.

    • @rehabhqofficial
      @rehabhqofficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, this is a very real thing but that isn't "lack of motivation". Risk avoidance is good and you are correct it is a fine line. That is why it is good to stay in therapy. Generally speaking, those who must "go it alone" should lean more to the cautious side. Just know, that you are not being lazy and you do not lack motivation. You are probably doing what is best.

  • @darkodarkovic7827

My experience is that if cognitive functions are not severely affected, one should first calm the conscious mind and realize that we can do the most for ourselves. Of course any help is welcome, but our mind and body can do the most in recovery. It is very important to have a positive attitude and think about what I can do, NOT what I cannot do. Listen carefully to your body and realistically expect small positive shifts that cheer you up. The help of a physiotherapist is very important because they understand how the body works. Self-pity and hatred only hinder our progress.

🌸🌸 Thank you Dr. Tara for your respectful comments. Every stroke is different. And every personality is different. And the shock and grief changes us. And all the tears of the horrible first weeks take their toll.
But if we survive, life goes on. And the healing is both body and mindset. And so much more is possible over time ...
I now take my fate as the opportunity to retire from old job structures, to build an online business, to meet new people and to slow life down from that hamster wheel. You are right, healing is also finding new purpose, new joys, new contents, a new pace and new passions.

I like training, but it does not like me. Following a basal ganglia stroke 7 years ago, I have developed dystonia down my affected side. It is difficult to ramp up the training at any level without getting a reaction two days after the exercise. Difficult to know the best way forward. I used to be a sports person, so I understand training to improve.

Watched a little over half. How do you do that, T? Spanking us nicely with positive vibes. Will be saving the remainder for the next time I may have needed a pep talk. (Oh, wow! Right there! That's one of those weird French compound interrogative slash subjunctive conjugations I was just reading about, a future probable verb tense used in combination with a past tense in the very same sentence, lol. Grammarly did not like that at all. Tres déclassé. You're out of order, sir. Fffocus, Andrew.)
Great one, Tara. Yes, once upon a time I had prided myself as an "outlier". Doctors told my sisters to begin closing my estate. What estate? After the divorce the lawyers took good care of that. The doctors told them he had a week left to live at the very most. There's another first, talking about myself in the 3rd person. Better stop that shyte. I sound like shyte. No, haven't had a glass of vino in..)
Yes, it was exactly 16 yrs of bad road ago. Walked and drove my fav old green pickup out of rehab 3 months later! Sounds heroic, but all the credit goes to a 26 yr old phd neuro-physical therapist, and where have we heard that before? But hey, that's fine old newsprint. It's a story. That's all it is. Recently I've been a bad boy, and began letting myself become darn near chair-bound. Enough already. Time to get back on the horse. We still have a couple more chapters to write.
Thanks for this. We all have our own ways of climbing inside of ourselves. I suspect you know what I'm talking about. Chico cracks me up by the way.
