Had a blast reviewing these designs from Burnout Paradise. Let me know which games have designs you think that I'd find interesting and I'll be sure to look out for them! Best, Frank
@@FrankStephensondesignAre there other examples of "high profile/veteran" designers doing this in entertainment media? I can't think of any notable ones. This sounds like a great way to make some extra money. If something you designed was downloadable content (DLC/micro transaction) and you got 5% of the revenue from that car or whatever, that would be a lot of cheese.
Thanks Frank. I was lead car designer on this project, way back in 2006. All commenters should appreciate these cars were designed in 2006, and sometimes way before that (as some are from other Burnout games). Comparison with modern cars after that date means I was ahead of my time! My favourite is one I personally designed, the Watson R25 Racer and Frank guessed correctly that I do indeed have an Automotive Design education… Go get your education kids, it gives you the chance to do cool stuff like this.

Thank you Frank. I was the Exec Producer on Burnout Paradise, this video was insightful and brought back a lot of happy memories for me and some members of the team.
This game is so amazing, replayed it a couple months ago and the memories from the 360 days booting up this game for the first time with the sunset and Guns n Roses playing was incredible.
@@ultraguy8771 It seems to be broken for some people but in my case it worked fine. If it works it's amazing, the graphics are old but still pretty nice for a game this old and the driving is very addictive. The music in the game is amazing too btw, there is a bit of everything.
Definitely second that. Some the designs in Ridge Racer 7 are bizarre. Like Burnout, you also have the added bonus of there being fictional manufacturers too.
This is really interesting because to me the Thunder custom is a complete mess, and the Montgomery Hyperion is a really tasteful blend of the E-Type and 240Z!
I've been waiting for this one so much. Burnout's vehicles always felt well designed, not to crazy, quite realistic and cool. They could've went full GTA V and done some absolutely crazy cars when it comes to the graphics, but it seems like they decided to focus mostly on the shape and simple lines of the cars and only started doing the graphics after they were happy with the overall shape of the vehicles. Atleast that's how I feel about it, I didn't watch the video yet. I can't wait to hear Frank's opinions

5:25 Frank sees Ferrari in everything :D I'd say that's a Koenigsegg CCX front + old Audi R8 rear mashup with some weird rear lights. (Upd: Huh, the guys are right, that's Noble M600.)
I'd love it see that too. In fact, some details first seen on NFS body kits were later seen or real life cars. So I guess there is some validity to them
The Tempesta and the V16 Revenge have always been my personal favorites from Paradise. I think I've seen a bit of them from time to time in my own sketches. I love sketching exotics. They have so much emotion to them, though American Muscle will always be my favorites. As for game cars to look at, I think Split Second might be an interesting one, if you haven't already.
ive noticed everytime a car comes up that CLEARLY resembles a koenigsegg/mclaren, he goes on saying its a ferrari/lambo-esque design... this makes me wonder if hes somehow contractually forbidden from using the koenigsegg or mclaren name
@@FrankStephensondesign It's because all of these cars were designed BEFORE McLaren did any road cars (except for the F1 from 1994). So Frank, you are perfectly correct that none of them have anything to do with McLaren design... Also, I think there was only one Koenisgegg in 2005 and I didn't like it at all. :-)
I'd love to see what Frank could do with the car design tools that are in Automation: The Car Company Tycoon Game. It would be fun to see how he tackles designing a car from almost scratch on any of the bodies that are based on real life cars in that game, and how he'd handle designing with fixtures instead of pencil and paper.
the car at 5:21 actually has three more references (not sure if intentional), but the front headlights are based off Koenigsegg CCX/CCR, the front bumper (especially the middle vent design) is DEFINITELY based on an NSX, and the rear is based on a fictionalized version of a Noble M600.
Ridge Racer Type 4 (though its a old game, the designs on some are so cool). 1+ for GT vision. Maybe also critique the ships and vehicles from Star Citizen, tons of effort went into every design to make it feel realistic but obviously futuristic (plus they sell for real life money in the thousands, crazy I know).
I think you should at some point look at some of Hot Wheels original fantasy castings. Especially lately they've been doing some really good ones. But, of course, the classics like the Bone Shaker, the Deoras and the Twin Mill would be interesting as well.
I loved the V16 Revenge! It has been on my heart since the Revenge days in 2005. Every time I see this car, it gives me the absolute chills and every time I used this car, I try my best to not crash and being an absolute psychopath in taking down others. This car tells me its designed to be out, looking for blood. And i can tell you, only a blood lusting driving skilled lunatic will want this car. Not some cocks with less skills and more cash to spend.
I'm surprised you didn't mention any influence from old Dodges (Charger, Challenger) on the first one. I think that's closer to it than a Chevy or Pontiac. Great video, these are always fun!
