Been in my plans for a long time... I was going to attach the ruffles to each other but I actually like the idea of having a petticoat layer.
I can assure you, Melanie, this sort of dress I would never wear in public, especially with those fabrics. It's extremely patchwork-esque and something you'd make for a doll, not a $4000+ skirt. It'd be a completely different story if it was in more consistent colour scheme with matching ruffles with lace trim on each layer, that's the kind of dress I'd rather dance in compared to this thrift-esque style

When I first saw the picture of the original Gucci skirt I thought it was so ugly and over the top, but seeing it in movement completely changed my mind. It's actually very beautiful, elegant, fun, and eye catching. It makes a statement without being tacky. Again good job on the amazing work, and this time I really have to lift my hat off to the designer of this skirt. What a bold and ingenious design
Definitely, I think that she also styled it much better than what was shown on the model (I mean, they paired a busy floral skirt with a busy floral top... that's way too much for my eyes to handle at once). It looks so cool!

The weight of the tiers stretched your fabric a lot, making it not align when you tried to sew the back together. Your tip to use a heavier lining fabric was spot-on. I have been drooling over this skirt style for a few weeks, thinking I could cut up some vintage sheets, but not sure how to do the underlayer/lining. Thanks for demystifying that part. When I am able to go thrifting again, this is going to be one of my sewing projects. That's for showing all the steps and tips. Love it!

@barbara correa i can’t afford them but that has nothing to do with why i don’t like them, they’re just not my taste. it has nothing to do with money, i don’t believe clothing is fashionable just because of the price, i believe clothing is fashionable when it looks good. i will admit that there are probably other wearable gucci products, but none of them would fit in my wardrobe by any means, while this skirt is very similar to all the other skirts i own
The Gucci blends more. The colors are more muted and from the same palette, especially the second layer and the blue one. And it lies flatter. But I really like the fun pops of color on April’s version. It goes with the style of the skirt. I rewound and watched the modeling part at the end three times. It’s just so fun! And she looks just beautiful in it - as usual.
You could possibly achieve a more muted look by dying the completed skirt in a diluted brown dye bath. Or you could make your skirt from vintage/heavily used fabric. I have some faded bedsheets that are quite muted.........
i like this version better, it's very fun, i like the contrast between the patterns and colors that meanwhile still keep the vintage vibe, it feels more like a patchwork style which i really like, i only prefer the way the gucci skirt's layers lay down, but that could be achieved by using lighter fabric
The fabric is totally different on the original. It looks like a poplin and not broadcloth and I am guessing is a rayon cotton blend not 100% cotton, hence the differnt hand am drape. But it is difficult to assertain on my tiny 10.5 “ screen

I just finished this skirt's ruffles and it is just huge and heavy. (I should weigh it) But so beautiful. I saw this silhouette used as an actual petticoat recently for an 1850's look … was beautiful also in all whites.
I’m into the silhouette but not so much into the specific fabrics. I’m imagining how avant-garde hairs it would look with some choice geometric prints or high contrast solids though.
@@styledbygabi I would think with vintage looking floral prints like...tea roses and the color and florals you see on old school bed sheet sets to be similar since there is a common theme you know how some bedsheets have stripes and florals and smaller print that are similar but still somewhat different. I think that would work great for this. Same color scheme and similar florals but different enough for each tier. I think the bottom works well with the top but that's because the tones are similar. I don't know if I would wear them separately. I def am going to try this pattern out but I think I'll be more patient and wait to come across the right fabric.

When we did gathering at school we was taught to divide the stitch into smaller parts, incase the thread brakes it won't affect the whole piece 😊 Haha, sorry it's hard for me to describe because English is my second language. My teacher here in the U.S. A. Taught me to do the same thing. Less chance of the threads breaking. Back 8n the late 70s or early 80s. When prairie skirt were popular.

I remember those! I had a three-tiered one in 6th grade (which was the 1971-72 school year), each tier the same pattern in different primary colors, when we studied square dancing. I grew up to be a minimalist, but I do love pastel floral skirts.
I’m gonna say it. Companies like Gucci make ugly clothing. And it’s been done before. I don’t think Th is skirt is ugly but I’d would never pay that amount of money I can do myself.
It's super easy; make sure the selvage of the fabric faces you and cut about couple inches into the fabric and then just tear the rest. This method works only for cotton and for other fabrics you tug the sides around the cut a bit and then pull the thread in the fabric to make a clean cutting line in the fabric. My friend told me that years ago and she learned it from someone who works in fabric shop. Just make sure the selvage of the fabric faces you, it won't work if it doesn't face you.
Anna Joy it also works better with natural fiber fabrics like cotton and muslins, synthetic fabrics won’t tear as cleanly (I’ve made that mistake before!)

as child of the 60's, this skirt is a perfect representation of the style of the 60's and early 70's, (which was a throw back to the 30's & 40's, and probably even further back) before Disco came along to sequin-sparkle the world...there's nothing new under the sun, or in fashion. "Everything Old Is New Again"...
Love the skirt, much better than I thought it could’ve possibly looked....but the second layer bothers me 😂 (I know it’s there because it’s a replica from the Gucci one but still)
Honestly despite having some machine competence I prefer the historical method for gathering. It's easier for me in a way I can't really describe. There's a lot to learn from doing stuff by hand. I'm not saying "modern methods bad" at ALL (sergers ♡) just that so many methods are available today a person can find what works for them.
@@TheVelvetKitten I mean, if you start and immidately hate it we have machines. Just a personal preference for me. Might also be relevant that I learned to sew *very* young by hand so it's more familiar.
A different way of doing this would've been to use one of the fabrics as the main fabric, which would take the place of the white fabric, then stitch all the other fabrics on top of that main fabric. I've work this type of skirt as a child in the '70s. Back then it was called a sister skirt and depending on how many tiers you had, the name of the skirt was created; eg 3 tier skirt would be called a "3 sister skirt." Still your version looks more time consuming, it is still cute. Thank you for sharing this with us!!
Amazing! You’re such a talent. I can hardly thread a needle. Having a physical problem (colostomy bag) that needs a lot of thought when buying clothes, it would be immensely helpful if I could sew and make my dresses exactly how I needed them to be. Edit: Maybe the quarantine would be the right time to pick up some sewing skills...🤔
What a great straight forward tutorial! If anyone out there is feeling like their tier fabrics don't quite coordinate or too bright a simple tea/coffee bath would give all the fabrics a more vintage look. Remember to test on scraps first!

Well fine, but nah really, this skirt is gorgeous and absolutely reminds me ancient Minoan skirts, with the addition of the V-neck... is kinda similar to Minoan shirts... just more covered, something tells me you might know your ancient civilizations?
It strikes me that this could easily be made using thrift store bed sheets or duvet covers as your fabric looks a bit like sheeting. One could even use striped sheeting for a non-circular underskirt and the line would be already marked.

I love this tiered gathered skirt design. I first fell in love when I got a skirt from Uniqlo on sale for one 4$! Of course it wasn’t as gathered but it was essentially the same style. Recently I made a gathered two layer knee length skirt and I love it. I definitely agree it’s more difficult than it seems bc of all the fabric. It took three days! Eventually I think I’ll get a rolling hem foot. Also, The weight from all the fabric made the waist stretch and I had to add a tighter elastic for the waist instead of the original shirred waist. I’ll definitely be hitting up the thrift stores after quarantine for pretty fabric. And I’ll use tips from this video and a similar video by BlueprintDIY to make a future skirt. Excited to be drowning in fabric. Lol this is a long comment.

I really love peasant skirts even though I don't wear them too often; I've made some with plaid shirting fabrics and ethnic fabrics, but I've done a more basic tiered style without all the layered ruffles. I checked the details of that Gucci skirt, thinking it may have been made with silk or some pricier fabric. No. It's cotton. I can get high-quality quilting or apparel cotton from JoAnn's or a quilting store. The materials costs are definitely on point, and you can even go less if you wait for sales. Manufacturers get that fabric at wholesale, so that's a serious designer markup. Personally, I like this skirt better than the designer one. I guess Little House on the Prairie is coming back again. This stuff was really popular when I was a kid. I will say that I like your version better, and I feel that you pull off the look far more comfortably than the models.
You know, I would actually sew this but A. Unfortunately this skirt wouldn’t suit me and B. My most hated part of sewing is hemming! 😅😓 so this isn’t for me but it look REALLY GOOD
just to give you a tip, when gathering something you need to times with 2.5 and if you using gathering foot it will fit with the measurement that you want after gather. example if you want 20" x 2.5 = 50" so when u gather with sewing foot it will get 20" so it will safe you more times.

I remember those! I had a three-tiered one in 6th grade (which was the 1971-72 school year), each tier the same pattern in different primary colors, when we studied square dancing. I grew up to be a minimalist, but I do love pastel floral skirts.
One of my mom’s coworkers had me make her an apron that looked like this a few years ago. Ruffles are honestly just my worst nightmare.
I’m gonna say it. Companies like Gucci make ugly clothing. And it’s been done before. I don’t think Th is skirt is ugly but I’d would never pay that amount of money I can do myself.

It's super easy; make sure the selvage of the fabric faces you and cut about couple inches into the fabric and then just tear the rest. This method works only for cotton and for other fabrics you tug the sides around the cut a bit and then pull the thread in the fabric to make a clean cutting line in the fabric. My friend told me that years ago and she learned it from someone who works in fabric shop. Just make sure the selvage of the fabric faces you, it won't work if it doesn't face you.

It's important that it's a weave fabric, not a knit.
Anna Joy it also works better with natural fiber fabrics like cotton and muslins, synthetic fabrics won’t tear as cleanly (I’ve made that mistake before!)

as child of the 60's, this skirt is a perfect representation of the style of the 60's and early 70's, (which was a throw back to the 30's & 40's, and probably even further back) before Disco came along to sequin-sparkle the world...there's nothing new under the sun, or in fashion. "Everything Old Is New Again"...

Honestly despite having some machine competence I prefer the historical method for gathering. It's easier for me in a way I can't really describe.
There's a lot to learn from doing stuff by hand. I'm not saying "modern methods bad" at ALL (sergers ♡) just that so many methods are available today a person can find what works for them.

@@TheVelvetKitten I mean, if you start and immidately hate it we have machines. Just a personal preference for me. Might also be relevant that I learned to sew *very* young by hand so it's more familiar.
A different way of doing this would've been to use one of the fabrics as the main fabric, which would take the place of the white fabric, then stitch all the other fabrics on top of that main fabric. I've work this type of skirt as a child in the '70s. Back then it was called a sister skirt and depending on how many tiers you had, the name of the skirt was created; eg 3 tier skirt would be called a "3 sister skirt." Still your version looks more time consuming, it is still cute. Thank you for sharing this with us!!
Amazing! You’re such a talent. I can hardly thread a needle. Having a physical problem (colostomy bag) that needs a lot of thought when buying clothes, it would be immensely helpful if I could sew and make my dresses exactly how I needed them to be.
Edit: Maybe the quarantine would be the right time to pick up some sewing skills...🤔

What a great straight forward tutorial! If anyone out there is feeling like their tier fabrics don't quite coordinate or too bright a simple tea/coffee bath would give all the fabrics a more vintage look. Remember to test on scraps first!

It strikes me that this could easily be made using thrift store bed sheets or duvet covers as your fabric looks a bit like sheeting. One could even use striped sheeting for a non-circular underskirt and the line would be already marked.

I love this tiered gathered skirt design. I first fell in love when I got a skirt from Uniqlo on sale for one 4$! Of course it wasn’t as gathered but it was essentially the same style. Recently I made a gathered two layer knee length skirt and I love it. I definitely agree it’s more difficult than it seems bc of all the fabric. It took three days! Eventually I think I’ll get a rolling hem foot. Also, The weight from all the fabric made the waist stretch and I had to add a tighter elastic for the waist instead of the original shirred waist.
I’ll definitely be hitting up the thrift stores after quarantine for pretty fabric. And I’ll use tips from this video and a similar video by BlueprintDIY to make a future skirt. Excited to be drowning in fabric.

I really love peasant skirts even though I don't wear them too often; I've made some with plaid shirting fabrics and ethnic fabrics, but I've done a more basic tiered style without all the layered ruffles. I checked the details of that Gucci skirt, thinking it may have been made with silk or some pricier fabric. No. It's cotton. I can get high-quality quilting or apparel cotton from JoAnn's or a quilting store. The materials costs are definitely on point, and you can even go less if you wait for sales. Manufacturers get that fabric at wholesale, so that's a serious designer markup. Personally, I like this skirt better than the designer one. I guess Little House on the Prairie is coming back again. This stuff was really popular when I was a kid. I will say that I like your version better, and I feel that you pull off the look far more comfortably than the models.

just to give you a tip, when gathering something you need to times with 2.5 and if you using gathering foot it will fit with the measurement that you want after gather. example if you want 20" x 2.5 = 50" so when u gather with sewing foot it will get 20" so it will safe you more times.
