- In 1973, Kevin Johnson wrote and recorded one of Australia's most endearing autobiographical rock ballads, "Rock and Roll (I gave you the best years of my live).
This was Kevin's second top ten hit, following on the success of "Bonnie, Please Don't Go " which reached No.2 nationally in 1971.
The song was covered by Mac Davis in the USA and reached No.15, Terry Jacks covered it and had a hit in his native Canada, both in 1974. - เพลง

Probably the best song about never quite making it in the music business. It's a shame this talented musician never broke through in the United States. Gorgeous and autobiographical. Singer/songwriters...take notice!
He may not have broken in to the USA as you say but over 50 Americans have covered this song including Sonny Curtis and Mac Davis who reached number 15 and 22 respetively.

'Two song repertoire'! One song repertoire would have sufficed if the single song was this wonderful song. Indeed by penning and performing this most sublime , ageless, sentimental and most brilliant of songs Kevin Johnson disproved his own lyrics : he is a star. Having grown up (and grown old - who is that old man staring at me from shop windows) with this song I can assure Kevin that he was always one step beside me and equally beside the countless rocknrollers who identified with the 'loser' character but also loved the superb tune and those great guitar riffs. The song remains as popular as ever with a certain age cohort of Irish rocknrollers (in part due to the great evangelical work done on behalf of the song by the legendary Irish broadcaster Val Joyce!) and will always be one of the great classic pop songs about popular music. Potent but not cheap! Well done matey and great after all the years to see you 'performing ' the song. i love this song, i first heard it with changed lyrics to fit the 1996 AFL theme song titled 'Aussie Rules I Thank You.' It is adapted really well and version with altered lyrics really resonates with me as a fan of the game, but the original lyrics are fantastic too

I remember this well and liked it. Sorry, but Mac Davis corrupted this song, particularly by changing the words to the cliched "I'm just a simple country boy...."
Every cover of this song ever done ought to be banned. They're an insult to the mastery of the original.
I have heard a version by Cajun singer Doug Kershaw which is great but not a great as this the original.😊

Agree it is great too. Over the hills and far away is a much more philosophical song pertinent to everyday life. Kedron Brook is also a favourite.
