    STORYLINE:
The British inquest into the death of Princess Diana and her companion Dodi Fayed opens on Tuesday with the aim of officially deciding, once and for all, what happened when their car crashed in Paris a decade ago.
The likelihood that it really will stamp out the rumours and conspiracy theories that have swirled around that one-car accident in Paris, however, seems remote. Neither is it likely that Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles will testify, as Fayed's father hopes.
In Paris, flowers and portraits of Diana left weeks ago to commemorate the tenth anniversary of her death still adorn the flame of liberty statue.
Located just above the tunnel where she had her fatal crash, the statue has become the main memorial site for the princess. One visitor, American tourist Christina Wienmann, is in favour of the British inquest.
She told AP Television "I think it's a little bit late but it's worthwhile because I think there are too many unanswered questions really. I think a lot of it is really that now that people are revisiting the scene and answering the questions there is a lot of interest in 'hey what really happened?'"
Police in France and Britain concluded that chauffeur Henri Paul was drunk and lost control of the couple's speeding Mercedes, which smashed into a pillar at the Pont d'Alma tunnel on August 31, 1997.
Paul died along with Diana, 36, and Fayed, 42; bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones was the sole survivor.
French courts absolved paparazzi, who were chasing the couple, of responsibility for the crash.
Former London police chief John Stevens led an investigation that concluded there was no substance to claims by Mohamed al Fayed, Fayed's father, that the couple were victims of a conspiracy including the Queen's husband, Prince Philip, and the security services.
That has not satisfied everyone, especially al Fayed. On Monday, his spokesman said Mr. al Fayed believes that the Coroner's inquest is the last chance to arrive at the truth of this matter.
But a coroner, or a coroner's jury, has no authority to blame any individual for a death. Its role in an inquest is to determine who died, when and where, and how.
"How" is the contentious part, and the jury is expected to hear testimony about the deaths for as much as six months.
The inquest predictably attracted so much attention that court officials built an annex to accommodate the swarms of journalists.

We ask governments in all countries to unite the bridge pillars as high as one or two meters so that if a car hits a bridge support, it can still slide not as badly as a car crashes into a bridge pillar so that an accident hitting a pillar like what happened to Princess Diana does not happen again,

A major accident with three deaths and the tunnel was still open? I guess this was some time afterwards...

This was certainly not the next morning. I have been blessed to pay my respects there twice.
It’s unfortunate that the RF can’t send some money over to Paris, it’s not like they are broke, at least Prince William, to repair the flame and perhaps make it the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Tunnel

Why were they in the tunnel? That wasn't the way home.

The memorial flame is the same as the flame on the Statue of Liberty
