- The same day the "Late Show with Stephen Colbert" bandleader received 11 Grammy nominations - the most by any artist this year - the love of his life was beginning chemotherapy treatments for her second battle with cancer. Jon Batiste and bestselling author Suleika Jaouad ("Between Two Kingdoms") talk with correspondent Jim Axelrod about how their world was turned upside-down, and how they met adversity with an act of defiance.

I've always been drawn to his music and personality. Now I know why. A high-vibrational being.
If more people were like Jon and his beautiful wife, this world would be just about perfect. I wish them both the best.

Tears in my eyes when she talked about being alone in the hospital and him recording these beautiful lullabies and playing them for her over the phone.🥲

Jon is the embodiment of a fully actualized human being, i.e. an individual who has attained the highest level of what humans are capable of.
I completely agree with this. He inspires anyone who is around him. It is infectious and completely real. He has reached a level of enlightenment I aspire to become.
He has a lightness of being in following music and where it takes him like to his wife’s side with new tunes.

When she said he wrote me a lullaby every night that just squeezed my heart and brought me to tears. What a beautiful couple their love is strong. I hope she beats her fight with cancer and they live a long and happy life together.

No way on earth when I watched the Late Show did that smile on John's face could ever have led me to believe that he was going through a struggle of this magnitude. I am sending healing energy and love from Jamaica 🇯🇲 to you and your wife. My family was traumatized after my very young aunt died of this disease in the 1990s. Be strong both of you.

I sensed something when watching the show that night and couldn’t place it…like, a certain sadness or like he had some knowledge we didn’t in that moment, but never dreamed it was the health of his wife…all makes sense now.😮

I burst into tears when I heard about the timing of the phone calls about his awards while they were at the cancer treatment center together. I had no idea they were going through this. They are both the best of humanity.
Her book was well done and she mentions meeting "Jon" later in the book
@john tower I don't remember that in her book. Hope not. She said "Now, more than a year and a half since my first chemotherapy treatment, I’ve come up with a plan to preserve the memory and delight of my mother’s favorite recipes. I only eat the very best of her cooking when I am in-between chemotherapy treatments. I try to make sure not to mix nausea and my favorite foods - because I have found that it confuses not only the taste buds, but also the emotion and memory of eating itself.
As I continue to cope with the effects of cancer and treatment, I am determined to preserve one of my favorite things in life - my mother’s cooking and the many childhood memories that go with it. As a result, I have to refuse her cooking once in a while, saving her food for only my best days. I hope there are a lot of those ahead. " She posted pics of her Swedish mom on FB too
@john tower no I just see pictures of them at dinner in December and she mentioned seeing them snd Jon only in hospital. Not my business but they do seem to speak .

This story left me nearly in tears. I have a similar situation; I got diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in April 2020. I don't really know cancer/chemo without pandemic rules. The cancer center has huge waiting rooms for patients to bring their entire families, but it's always so empty since I've been there because nobody's allowed to bring any guests even now in April 2022. This is maybe the loneliest I've been for so long in my lifetime. Everyone's still masked, so I have yet to even see the faces of all these healthcare people who treat me on the regular. I mentioned it during one of my last appointments, and the PA lowered her mask from across the room. There was a long moment of genuine human eye contact before we both got a little misty/awkward. I've been mostly home quarantined for almost 2 years due to chemo. Life completely changed so suddenly, and I wonder if it'll ever seem the same again. I wouldn't wanna recall any of this if not for the internet giving me and my family a way to communicate. Love, patience, compassion, and kindness are important commodities right now like air, water, and rest... We cannot thrive for long without love. It gives me such gratitude when I stumble across stories like this! Thank you for this touching video!! I'm going to share it with some of my loved ones this week. I wish this couple all the best the world has to offer!
Edit: Thank you for the encouraging and heartwarming comments. I'm okay. My cancer is managed with chemo, so the goal is basically just to not get sick and to keep things as they are. I'm doing very well actually. I just got hit with unexpected emotions in this video. Your kindness is appreciated!

Bless you..... I've been down a similar path. Not to your degree, but one that has completely rocked my world (including early stage breast cancer). I understand a bit about the incredible impact Covid has had on treatment and healing. And also the view one gets from on their knees. I used to think that view would be the worst possible. But I now see it as my greatest gift. I wish the same for you. And for so very much healing. 💛

Such beautiful souls. After 25 yrs together and apart I married my husband. 3 weeks later he got sick, neurologic symptoms, sore throat, fever and a cough. He passed from acute respiratory distress syndrome at the start of the pandemic. He loved Jon Baiste. Every time I see Jon I'm reminded of my husband. I hope they are able to grow old together and keep creating beautiful things.

We should all be humbled.
As a disabled person who has had to endure this situation on my own. My husband's response was "Disabled??? I don't want to take care of anybody disabled!!" After being struck down by a hit-and-run driver left on the roadside with 37 fractures and every organ compromised, mine was a journey of solitary long term recovery. With MS and CCL I have been barely able to hold myself together as I endure my firstborn son succumbing to covid after 97 days in hospital. Music has been a mainstay for me. KENNY G & STEVIE WONDER along with the Broadway soundtrack of HAMILTON I am listed as catastrophic with a grieving depression I cannot describe on this 250th day since my son's death 💔 😢 I am thrilled to hear of a loving relationship with a supportive spouse. I shall borrow some hope from these two.

I was meant to watch this… my husband has stage 4 colon cancer and I’m hoping he will live… however the doctors say he won’t.. I’ve never been more terrified, yet seeing this has given me a bit of glimmer of hope that I needed tonight. I had no idea Jon was going through this, and I completely relate to this situation right now. I hope he knows that he isn’t alone, I’m fighting the same struggle, and I hope that he knows the healing power of music is real, keep writing her those songs, they are healing her in more ways than one may realize

God's healing to you, trust his word like you're crazy, blind and mad.
By his (Jesus') stripes he is healed . Irrespective of what the doctors report is. Yes they're intelligent, knowledgeable and smart, but aren't God.
Don't key into that report. Simply say you've heard it, you see the symptoms of the disease , but like you're crazy believe God to do this. Your husband and you have nothing to lose. Success and healing in Jesus name
Just a little update: Jon is not only an 11x Grammy nominee, but a 5x Grammy winner. And that's just this year. Strap in, indeed.
Don't forget that he won an Oscar (jazz composer) for the Disney pixar movie "Soul".

Who can not love Jon Batiste? I know, there probably are plenty of people who hate him for the usual stupid reasons, but that says much, much more about them than it does about Jon. I love Jon Batiste. That with all of his awards, he still is gracious enough to entertain so many of us on Stephen Colbert is one reason I love him. This interview just proves beyond his talent he is good human being. I wish him a long lengthy prosperous career.
If he’s going to be any late night talk show’s band leader, I’m glad it’s Colbert’s. They are of a similar caliber and reflect each other’s brilliance.
Jon is ethereal. A hugely talented man with a gentle soul. He never strikes a wrong note in his music or in his life. They will go forward through this together.
But don’t put that on his shoulders. He’s not perfect.

I'm so moved by this touching story. I have a high level of respect for Jon Batiste taking care of his love...behind closed doors. No one knew anything about his relationship,yet he loves her. No one knew anything about his marriage, yet he takes care of her. Proves you don't need to expose your life on social media, for clout, just to do the right thing.

This segment was incredibly touching. It's by grace and design that these two human beings have each other. I pray for healing and happiness for both of them.
I feel like I need to listen to them both and contemplate their words, their method, and their love, every day.
Not sure why I feel like putting this out here but I was nearly in tears watching this segment. I was previously aware of both Jon and Suleika's individual talents but the irony of the reoccurrence of her health issue simultaneous to an award season and all the accolades that have come with this point in Jon's career is heartbreaking.
Many years ago when my life was at the pinnacle I lost everything practically in one season season. It took years for me to sort it out until once again I felt stable. Battle-weary and scarred, but stable. Then, one year ago out of the blue, I got a cancer diagnosis, cancer was never in my family. But if grief makes one sick... (?)
Now I'm in a city I didn't previously live in because I was here when I was diagnosed and the city has a great research and Cancer Hospital. I knew nothing of cancer even though I have a biochem background. All I knew is from the movies like 'terms of endearment' and here I was, detached from the world during a pandemic, heading into weekly chemo.
I have the same walker that Suleika has. I chose green. Verdant. Life Giving. Green for the renewal of spring.
Sometimes there are simply no more tears, but even before Jon mentioned defiance I uttered the word.. DEFIANCE.
I pray God gives u strength to continue on yo healing journey,bcos u will heal...I assure u.💖

I'm in the 'scanning' stage of colon cancer now. Every 6 months I get a CT scan to see if anything is back. It can all be taken away so quickly. But not today. Today I am alive.
There are only 2 good things about surviving colon cancer:
1. I am alive. (Let's just stop here for a moment to recognize how beautiful the world is.)
2. I met the most fantastic people who worked so hard to keep me alive.
Nothing else to recommend about colon cancer.
Jon is my hero. So glad that the honors he's recently received will allow the world to see and follow his inspiring example!
