    I just bought one of these a few days ago. Original owner, 84k miles and a 5 speed. So far everything said in this old video is spot on. Somewhat torquey engine with mediocre performance. Not that I'm complaining - it's just how it is. Yes, a lot of body flex on mildly uneven surfaces. Even his comment about the color of the trunk lid being slightly off is true about mine. It has original paint and the red is slightly darker. Overall, a fine commuter for the money.

    I'm not that impressed with newer dashboards. The dash with the gauges for this Celica GT was super well laid out. I appreciate the excellent analogue gauges.

      Meanwhile I prefer the newer ones that shows your vehicle in a 3rd person pov, digital gauges, mpg, extra gauges, and a cool compass with a map 🤷‍♂️ lol
      I always found it cool when cars in the 80s had them and I still like them but I just wish the technology would’ve been capable for it in the 80s. If they were like they are now then it wouldn’t have been a problem lol

    '87 GT hardtop during college. At the end, sold it with just under 300K miles. Original motor and transmission. Just a new radiator, a bunch of brake pads and a s*** ton of brake light bulbs over the years. Gawd, so many bulbs. Loved that car, though. Like driving a go-kart.

    Call me old fashioned, the previous generation was my favorite, across the board. Styling, switchgear, drivability. It lost a certain something with the FWD design. Nothing like being "pushed" away from a light rather than "pulled."

    I had one of these for 5 years. ‘88 Base model ST 5 speed felt like it wasn’t that reliable compared to the corolla I had before it. 188k miles and it went through several alternators , 2 radiators , numerous brake pads, oil pumps and a few other things I’m probably forgetting. This was in addition to the things like clutches and struts/shocks. It may have been a abused by previous owner but this was pre-CARFAX days too. On the plus Still handled great even with cheap kumho 13 tires on the original wheels. Had a magnaflow exhaust with 2.5 inch tubing that sounded decent. I miss it from time to time but I think I miss my 244 Volvo more

    I had the 88 GT 1600cc with no smog equipment making more HP but about the same 0-100 km. performance. Very very reliable but with 13 inch wheels and rear drum brakes it was actually dangerously short in the braking performance. Good memories though, a chick magnet in those years.

The older rear drive models are getting very hard to come by where I live. Really regretting selling an 83 Celica I had.. I had the 87 st 5 speed and it was good car, i would trade it for 83 Honda prelude also good car then traded that for 89 prelude si wonderful car and traded that for 90 Toyota CELICA gts which didn’t have turbo but all the body kit. Beautiful car but felt heavy and just wasn’t as good being the transmission would pop out of gear in second and third and at 144k miles: my si before had 177k and was perfect just not quite as attractive but way more toss able. Miss those cars.

Would always start up. I only had to replace the alternator and battery. Had her five years. Some crackhead ran into her destroying her. I cried 😢 like a 👶

    Why they ever changed the Celica's to RWD I'll never understand.

    • @JackBandicootsBunker
      @JackBandicootsBunker 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because the Supra continued as a RWD. Remember, once upon a time the Celica and the Supra were the same car, then, the Supra continued the RWD lineage while the Celica changed accordingly to FWD/AWD. As the Supra grew bigger than the Celica, this helped Toyota offer mainstream sports cars of three sizes with three different drivetrain options: MR2 with MR, Celica with FF/4WD and Supra with FR.

    • @ParadoxdesignsOrg
      @ParadoxdesignsOrg 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      i guess back then companies were trying to push out FWD cars a lot more than "ancient technology" RWD cars, so you do have a great point there. The MR2 on the other hand just came out of nowhere. that's a creature onto its own. lol. cheers.

    • @JackBandicootsBunker
      @JackBandicootsBunker 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      paradoxdesigns Exactly, that was an entirely new concept of an affordable and economical 2-seater Mid-Engined runabout. Conceived in the same vein as the Fiero, except Toyota executives took their heads up their arses and realized it had to be a true sport vehicle, unlike GM which fucked it up with the components they used for the Fiero. Cheers :)
