Coach after completing my first half marathon I no longer have doubts. I'm now on my 7th month of running at 39 and the way I see it I have a good 10 years left to try to touch greatness. Right now I'm training for a sub 3:20 marathon. People can call me crazy but I fully believe within time I will eventually go well under 3 hours when I'm in my 40s. I'm nowhere close to my potential and that is my motivating factor, I'm going to shock some people
Excellent topic Nate. I’m up to marathon number 17, I think, lol. I can honestly say that I’ve never stepped up to the starting line without thinking “I did everything I could do in this training block“. Regardless if it was enough or not. That usually ends all doubt. There is no cheating the Marathon. It will find you out!!
So true James. Thanks for setting the bar VERY high for us late 40 somethings...you running as fast as you have at 53 years young is inspiring brother.
Great advice! I've found the 10 day taper to really help too. Dropping too much 3 weeks out really leaves you feeling a lot of doubt about whether you still have fitness.
Last week I had my last XC race of the season, ran a 17:05. the goal was sub-17 but i am still proud of that time (30 second PR). the conditions were not ideal, it was over 75 degrees F and sunny. also our team walked around the zoo all day the Friday before the race lol I have a flat road race on Saturday where I hope to break 17, the conditions are looking much better and I am confident that I can do it! do you think I should do one more speed workout on Wednesday or just do easy runs and strides? race is on saturday by the way (I did 6x400, 1x800 on Saturday, and 6x200 on Monday, all of these just under goal race pace)
Awesome work dropping that 17:05 Zman. THAT is what I'm talking about and a 30 second PB? #respect Yes, you are well capable of a time WELL BELOW 17 minutes. Keep up the great training and racing.
Until CIM, my first marathon, I'll have plenty of questions, but I'll ask them one at a time so you don't get sick of me... First seems simple but curious, how long of a warm up would you do before a marathon and how close to the start of the race would you start that warm up? My bad that was 2 questions.
Not only am I training for race day, but I sometimes, even at the beginning of my training block, no matter my fitness level, imagine myself at the start of my race. It helps me have a good run. By the way Coach Nate, just wanted to ask. Where did all of the good racing flats go? Ex. Tartheredge by Asics is good, but it seems like everyone's going to Heaven with all of this high stacked carbon plated stuff. I'm sorry, but my feet actually like to put in some effort too. Lol. What are your thoughts on the "super shoe" movement? I'm old school, I love my low profiled racing shoes.
Keep up the superior work Kenley. I believe in you brother. I think runners need to wear what feels best for them for sure. I ran my fastest 5K-10K-10 mile-half and full marathon PRs in non-super shoes. I think today, runners who choose to not wear them are at a slight disadvantage versus those that do but if the athlete doesn't put in their work in training no super shoe is going ton aid in anyway.

It is that high motivation level you have that is going to get you under 3:20. THAT is for sure. Keep up the great work.

Sir I have only 4 days left before my 5k race can I do race pace practice 2 days ??
I would do a mile warm-up, 1 mile at goal 5k pace, 1 mile cool-down TODAY, NLT tomorrow, not 2 days out. Good luck in your upcoming 5k.
