    I could never really understand why dried clay was used to make a slip when the clay is already moist. Im very new to the slip idea and really interested in learning more. I can’t find ready made colour ones where I live, so I need to make my own. Thank you very much.

    Thanks for the video. May I ask what the porcelain powder was that you used as the base of the slip (container with red lid). Thanks.

    I'm new to pottery, this video is very helpful. So, correct me if I'm wrong, slip is pretty much under glaze? Like the ones you can buy pre-made in all the colors?

      Hi Samantha, Slip is liquid clay. It is not underglaze but since you can put a glaze over it, it acts like an underglaze but is not referred to as such.. You can add an underglaze colorant such as Amaco Concepts to slip and you can use it as an underglaze. Don't put slip that has underglaze added to it anyplace on the pot that will touch the kiln shelf because it will stick.

    What was the liquid colorant you used instead of the dry mason stain? Thank you for making such an informative video!

      Thank you! That's good to know since underglazes are on the cheaper side then most mason stains! :)

    Why use colored slip rather than an underglaze?

      My comment would be: Interesting idea - make a small test and be sure to use a bisque tile or plate under your test piece. My thoughts are that the glaze addition would flux/melt and end up like Egyptian paste. There are so many variables that a thorough test would be needed for every glaze addition. You may be on a new and exciting line of Claywork. My caution would be to use a mask while mixing and protecting your kiln shelves. Let us know how this works out. B

      You can try adding a powdered glaze to the slip. That is not normally done, however, because powdered glaze has flux which will make it flow during the firing. If you experiment, don't put it anyplace on the pot that will touch the kiln shelf because it will stick.

    does this have to be fired to cone 10? or can it be fired lower?

    • @barbaracostanzo5742
      @barbaracostanzo5742  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It can be fired lower but a cone 10 clay fired to cone 6 may not vitrify but I've done that with clay 525 and no water seeped out of the pot when I tested it. If you fire to low temperature like 04 or 06, it probably will not be totally waterproof because a cone 10 clay won't vitrify at such a low temp. You can also choose to use a white clay that fires at your desired temperature to make the slip.

    Can you post a link where to buy the dry slip

      You can make slip with your own clay body. It doesn't have to be dry. You can dry out trimmings of your own clay if you want to make your own powder. Make sure to wear a respirator when dealing with powdered slip/clay.

      Slip is liquid clay. You can make dry clay from your own white clay by letting small pieces dry out.

      Reserve a blender for the studio. Don't use tools that you cook with.
