      I’d love to give the Polks some fair consideration, but this seems like no contest. I own the Sony’s, and while they do lack in bass, they are champs above anything the Polks could hope to do.

    I have the polks and use them for rear surrounds... there is a decided difference between the 2 , thats without question...as to Which type of sound You prefer, thats Subjective...those sony's sound more "in ur face" forward in the mid freqs while the polks sound more laid back in the mids... myself, I actually Like a more recessed midrange..now perhaps thats Not a pure flat response that audiophiles rave about but its easier on my ears...I hate a honking, forward, mid freq in the 2-4khz range and usually eq it down a tad....that said, the sonys Do fill those mid freqs more than the polks and if you were watching a graph, they would likely be more flat in response..I can see why most people choose them... they sound decent

      If you want to hear what an actual midrange dip sounds like, listen to the new Polk XT15s. The old T15s don’t have a midrange dip as much as they have a peak at around 2.5khz that overpowers the lower midrange, causing vocals to not be heard as easily. I get that this could be perceived as a midrange dip to some people, but it’s more like an everything dip: they also have absolutely no low bass or high treble to speak of in comparison to either the Sonys or XT15s.

    I was using a pair of T15 for my desktop system, wasn't thrilled with the sound. After hearing about the Sony SSCS5s found a pair used for $75. Couldn't believe the difference in sound quality. Am going to give away the Polks.

    I had purchased a pair of Polk T15's when Fry's was closing for less than fifty dollars. After using the pair for awhile I never felt like the T15's ever sounded worth the little I paid. So out of curiosity, I opened one of the speakers to find no fill or any sort of crossover, just a chained wires to the terminals.

    • @djijspeakerguy4628
      @djijspeakerguy4628 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That does not sound consistent with the set of T15s I had. T15s are among the worst speakers you can get for the price, but they do have small crossover components glued to the back of the terminals, as well as a thin layer of stuffing (which is what I assume you meant by “fill”) in the back. A speaker with no crossover components on the tweeter will cause the tweeter to blow.
      I think your T15s were not genuine Polk ones! Even big electronics stores can get shipped fakes sometimes! Out of curiosity, how heavy were they? How thick was the box material? Mine have extremely thick MDF sides with triangle bracing, and the magnets are shielded which also makes them heavy. The tweeter magnet is tiny though, but it’s a strong neodymium magnet. Does this description sound like your pair?

    Did you change volume setting to to get higher sound from sony 6 ohm to complete with polk t-15 ? I had sony center 6 ohm center and had to increase volume knob to get same performance from 8 ohm speaker, which drives easier with lower volume setting. Actually the better test would be sonys against the polk t-100s.

    I have no dog in this fight as I use Fluance SX6w's and Klipsch R 41M's, but I just bought a pair of the Polk Audio T15's for a friend of mine whom I'm building a small system for as a Christmas present as right now she's using Tunein on her smart tv as her radio and I have a vintage late 70's Hitachi SR-504 receiver I've cleaned the pots and switches on that I plan on giving her to use with the speakers, along with a new, still in the box Sony turntable that came with another receiver I bought on FB marketplace. I also intend to get a DAC so she can run her TV through the vintage receiver if she likes. Personally either of these speakers sounded good to me with the Polks being a little higher in sound but I think she'll like that as she prefers 70's & 80's pop and rock.

      I would say upper midrange and lower bass (below ~85 Hz) are "withdrawn" on the Sony, but quite a lot of people actually like a withdrawn upper midrange (2-4 kHz interval) - and the Sony has a lot of fans. But it's certainly not a neutral speaker.

      When it flips to the Sony after 2:43. You can hear some low bass actually get added in, and the vocals get clearer. Sure, the treble gets brighter though, so for many people, that’s the first thing they hear. You should really listen to both sets for an hour straight before deciding what to get. The speaker you get bored listening to after the longest time should be the one you buy.
      You’d be better off with one of those cheap 90s all-in-one stereos than the Polk.

      @@FrederickW I use $1,200 floorstanding speakers as stands for my little Sony bookshelves, they do a great job of it. The Sony's simply have a cleaner, more detailed sound, and believe it or not, a slightly less harsh treble as well, and after adding a Sony Core 10" subwoofer, the bottom end is filled out and it sounds great. Altogether, my Sony bookshelves and Sub cost about $200, and my DAC, preamp, and amp, about another $200, and I'd put my $400 system up against anything under $1,000 US.

      The Sony SSCS5 speakers punch well above their weight class. Theres a concept called diminishing returns which you should familiarize yourself with
