This brings back memories fill up the oil & check the fuel , 3 miles to the gallon of fuel & 100 miles to the gallon of oil ,when u leave it idle put a bucket under it catch the leaking oil & dump it back in the engine when you are ready leave ,years ago you could tell the guys that ran detroits in the truck stop they were all deaf & there right arm was bigger than there left arm from shifting gears & They smelled like oil. HAHA

If any of you are railfans like me, the sound of that KW reminds me of why I like EMD locomotives (with their 2 stroke diesels) over the chugging 4 stroke GE locomotives. My dad used to drive truck, hauling steel in the late 50's early 60's (pre-interstate highway days), and he told me that he loved his detroit diesels.
James Evans..... I "love" Both versions of these uni-Flow Scavenged engines as well (Detroit Diesel & EMD), but... they have Nothing in common with each other, other than they're Both of the Uni-Flow Scavenging design, and both use self metering Unit style injectors, and the older Series 567 & 645 engines used Rootes Style blowers... but other than that, they had absolutely Nothing in common... including sound.
That old 318 sounded good with the Jake sneaked on it. I owned a 1973 just like that one but mine had the big cam 350 Cummins in it with a 9 speed over drive, 3rd and 4th gears where turned around in it to make it over drive and I loved driving it.
They used more than one 281 Pete in that movie, though they were portrayed as one and the same... but, if you remember, one had a Detroit (8-71) and the other, a Cummins.
Oh, that was a sweet sound and complete with flappers even... KW W900s have always seemed the best looking truck to me since I was a kid. He's done a good job with this one, a nice combination of new mixed in with old-school. Glad you shot different views on this drive, too. I'm still partial to old-school rotating beacons (they still haven't matched the look sufficiently well with led's) instead of the modern lights but it's getting harder and harder to find them, much less replacement lamps (they're getting ridiculously expensive). That's just being nitpicky, of course lol ... Love this setup and the old Bantam, too! Straight exhaust sounds great but, yeah, I like my hearing, too... lol The missed gear was amusing but anyone that tells you they haven't missed a gear (ok, maybe not the "drivers" with "automatic only" on their licenses these days) would be lying to you... :)))

I love the two stroke Detroit's! They sound so awesome and are so bad to the bone! I want to find a old truck with one in it one day and refurbish it! We use to have a frac pump in our fleet that I use to run and work on. If you think that thing is loud, then you should hear a 1800hp 2 stroke running at full load around 2100 rpm! So bad ass!! Love the old stuff! Awesome video bro!

Our local library was getting rid of old books, and that was one of them. I made my wife grab it, so we now have two copies. Kind of sad that it won't be in the library anymore though.

Detroit diesels were made by General Motors during ww2 the 671 engines were in everything from landing craft on the beach in Normandy to tanks trucks etc. Gm made the engines so tuff they kept making them and sold them to truck equipment manufacturers.
America was literally built by 2-Stroke Detroit engines. Later, the Series 60 12.7 was the first truck engine to ever run over 1 million miles without an overhaul. I have a 99 12.7 that has been one serious money making chunk of cast iron & steel.
Beautiful ride!!! Would definitely do something about the Detroit!!! Drove an exact twin to it, with a big cam 400 Cummins...not nearly as WELL maintained as yours. Thanks for sharing the old iron!!!
I live about a 1/2 mi from a major intersection with a traffic light. When the gravel/sand haulers are running and they catch the light, This sound is what I hear. Those pipes singing. 2 miles down the same road is a hill. I can hear their pipes while sitting on the patio drinking coffee in the morning. More so in the winter when the leaves are off the trees. A Harley with straight pipes is the same thing. Hear them al the way to the city limits traffic light.
