- Created by Check Six Games, their first (and last) project was the first non-Insomniac-developed Spyro game, and the first 6th-gen entry in the series. It was a rushed mess of a game, with only 8 levels, tons of glitches and bugs, and long load times. I decided to revisit the game, and here is a small sample of the madness that occurred during a casual run through the game.
This game's critical failure single-handedly sent Spyro from a Top-Tier platforming franchise into budget-ware territory. The only sequel it got was A Hero's Tail (a step-up from EtD, but not quite up to the standard of the PS1 trilogy), and it was followed by two reboots, each worse than the last.
All of Spyro's misfortunes can be traced back to Enter the Dragonfly; a title that Spyro and his fans feel the effects of to this day. If Enter the Dragonfly was a better game, Spyro as a whole may have had a better fate.

Yeah at least they weren't like THAT god i hate those and it drove me away from gaming/commentary area as a whole for a good year. Then i found people who acted like ..well like they weren't tripping on some kind of shrooms with anger issues.

If this was ever going to be remade, they should stick to the plan as they were going to do by giving it more places to explore, more collectables, quicker loading times, more character dialogues, no glitches and no rush.

If I had to sum this up I would probably call it an underwhelming clusterfuck. We don't need to add more shit and polish a turd here. The original trilogy is getting remastered and that's all the necessary damage control and love this franchise needs. This shit can fade into obscurity and die where it belongs.

That's what i said and it technically is, this was pushed for christmas under a lot of pressure and short time. You CAN'T do that especially to a good series such as spyro! (RIP) They were apparently worried about falling behind and having spyro forgotten but as you know, people who panic are usually the first to die in shows 0o ... you can actually learn stuff from emulated/fake media. LOL ... In their attempts to save it, they smothered out the flame and killed it. If you know about fire you should have just gently coaxed the flames to make an even brighter larger flame slow and steady does win the race! just not lazy and procastinating.

Really. Ripto's dialogue is so bad. My skin crawls every time I hear Ripto's last line of dialogue before the final fight: "HOCUS POCUS!".... yeah, what a good way to set up a final boss fight with a great villain like Ripto. And why let Gulp talk? It really takes away from his intimidating presence (it's not like we even fight him in this game anyway, but still...)
Yep. I like the subtitles, they're waaay less bothersome than someone talking over this!

Oof no people should like this game more the glitches are so funny. I find a new one every time I play. Even the PS1 Spyro had some serious glitches...like the swim in the air glitch, which is also in Enter the Dragonfly in a few worlds
Ahhh yes they are ; ) swim in the air glitch was pretty cool. I was surprised when that happened to me. but when you are trying to play the game seriously it can get annoying, then you have your perfectionist nit pickers.
I wonder how I played this game and managed not to run into any of these glitches.

It's quite sad that Spyro: Enter the dragonfly is full of bugs ands lacks some real inventivity because the worlds and the characters quite fit the spirit of the original trilogy, contrary to the games that will follow (A Hero's Tail etc...). And the music is very good tbh.
What's more sad is how (seemingly toxic-ly) people (so called "Fans"...) are shitting down on this game hardcore left and right, when it was stupidly rushed for christmas / on a short time frame. The game could have been so much more, and all of its failures are because of hungry devs/ceos what ever. It's an under-developed game which feels more like an prereleased open beta that was beta`d too early. (as if you were a beta tester,but everyone gets one if u have money) ... to me that's like yelling at a fetus (say for maybe not being able to grab or something cuz ya know, it doesn't have fully developed hands/thumbs?)... But that's just me. I just think it's a bit childish and silly to have some hormonal raging ETD/TLOS/Skylander phobia over a video game. I can get not likeing it and giving poor reviews, but the way people just loose their shit seems a bit...manic. to me. Like they think this game was being worked on for years. it just -ah :( poor spyro. (also those pricks got karma to them, i heard they took huge hits, but unfortunately so did spyro.)

Daily Dungeonists I'm not a fan of the implications here. Sure I can agree one can play and have a normal causal experience by just doing the normal Spyro experience. So on that end I can see why he wouldn't think the game is that bad, I don't think it's the worst thing ever looking at it from that perspective. But a beta is suppose to be a first look or first stage development, not a final product. But to me it kinda sounds like this is saying "You can halfass your game and can come out with an incomplete product, but as long as it doesn't piss you off or frustrate you, you get a pass for subpar work simply because it doesn't contain frustrating elements that only amount to a subjective opinion" Yes there is some amount of "Can we be too harsh or not"? But that still doesn't excuse the fact that it's literally unfinished. You don't get credit for not finishing things, that's literally how things work in the world. You don't get credit for half doing an art piece, even if the art piece is just a doodle, you don't get credit for half doing your position at work, the same applies here, you can't get credit for half doing a game, especially when it feels like a beta. I agree that people shouldn't rage or treat it like the worst thing ever, but that's also no excuse to discard why people don't like it.
And even then Season of Flame for the GBA (which came out 2 months before Enter the Dragonfly) is LITERALLY Enter the Dragonfly, but done better. It also doesn't help that ETD rips off Season of Flame's plot and ETD does everything worse with its presentation. (Or doesn't even try at all)
I mean a lot of people don't give Sonic 2006 a free pass (even if I think people's bashed the game enough where hating it has become redundant), even though the game was rushed under the same circumstances as Enter the Dragonfly. Even factoring in how harmless it is, I still find the general gameplay boring and just a slower, more unpolished version of the original trilogy's gameplay.

There is no "finished" version where everything's way better. This is the game we got, and thus we're perfectly within our right to criticise its flaws. And if you don't like people hating it, you can just go somewhere else instead of clicking on a video that specifically criticises it.
I'm going to chyme in and say Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly is one of the best games solely because Spyro is a purple dragon, and I LOVE purple dragons.

This was the first non-Insomniac console Spyro game. Ironically, thus came out the same year the first Ratchet and Clank came out. Which was also made by Insomniac.
Yes the game is rushed, but in my opinion it had some cool level designs and great music. Obviously not as good as the ps1 games.

It's a bad game, but actually seeing it run at 60 fps is quite a sight to behold.
I was curious to see what the game would look like at 60fps after learning it was possible with Dolphin, so that's what got me to revisit the game. Despite everything against it, the game was forward-thinking enough to support native widescreen and run at an unlocked frame-rate, allowing this to be possible. Funny how that worked out.
From what I read about this game's development I kinda feel bad for the upstart devs behind it. Universal gave them no chance in hell to succeed.

Even as a rather young kid I knew this game was bad, and back then every video game was a gift from Jesus in my eyes.
Honestly after watching that stupid long documentary on this game I can completely understand why it turned out like this. Universal was pushing a strict deadline and the team was so off and on and poorly organized and poorly managed.
It really is the music and environments are the only good points i can mention about the game

It really is sad that the developers chose to rush this game out for the holidays. This could have become an amazing game. I remember getting this as a present for Christmas and being so excited to play it, little did I know... So sad.

Exactly like this lol. But I do agree that Enter the Dragonfly is a glitchy and laggy mess. Reason for that is rushed development.
I have to say the frame rate looks much improved over what I remember playing.
On Dolphin, you can enable CPU Override in the advanced settings, which breaks most games (since most are designed for a very specific clock speed). However in this game's case, it just makes the framerate higher. A definite improvement over playing on the original hardware.
The ps2 version for me was less glitchy

1:46 Absolutely. The OST is still on point with the rest of the series, thanks to the magnificent Stewart Copeland still being on. Cloud 9 is actually one of the best tracks in the series in my opinion.
The only thing really saving this game is that and a weird sense of nostalgia to me. Some of the worlds and their designs were pretty neat aswell (the Gem-cave level, the Honeyfarm-level, etc)
As a Spyro fan I can say that this is the worst Spyro game I played. Any of the Skylanders games are better than Enter the Dragonfly.

The water looks really bad, I mean they could add a filter when you enter it, but Spyro's and sparks' model looks quite nice, more animated
The Levels have a lot of Potentials, but the Budget cut forbade the full work and chiselling on the plot, Levels and some specific models

Originally this game was supposed to have over 25 levels 120 dragonflies and faster loading times too bad universal forced the devs to rush this game.
I remember I used to play this game a lot when I was kid. I remember this one time I was getting ready to do the tank mini game and for some reason the load time was 3-5 minutes. When I finally entered, the game froze my PS2.
I put the blame on Universal for forcing the developers to rush this game in order to be available in time for Winter 2002. No wonder why this game sucked.
I for one never encountered any of these bugs (except for the air swimming animation, that I actually triggered on purpose to see what it was like). I also played it on the PS2 instead of the GameCube (I didn't even know there was a GameCube version).
This game wasn't terrible though, it just needed more time in development. Everyone gives this game crap about being terrible and buggy, well, what do you expect from a rushed project that barely had the basics ready and was thrust out into the world and put on shelves?

The max amount of times you can fight Ripto is 3 in the game. He'll go as far as turning into a big ugly monster and you can only attack when his staff is stuck to the ground. You should've captured that dude.
I grew up playing the original trilogy. I remember when this game came out. At the time, I felt bad that I wasn't able to play it because I didn't own a gamecube or PS2 at the time. Now that I see gameplay footage like this, I can safely assume that I didn't miss out on anything special. haha

This game along with Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex REALLY shows how Universal was really pushing the teams way too hard. Insomniac wasn't spared from this during the trilogy, and Crash by the time WoC came in was rushed to the point they abandoned Mark Cerny's original idea for the game...
It is possible to run straight through thosse unlockable fences in the starter world. Remember doing it as a kid

I may have played every single console Spyro game, but this one was so bad that i completely forgot that it exists. Good thing it isn't getting remastered.
In the new Spyro remasters, there's a glitch where if you superfly onto a ladder, you can keep climbing it forever and drift away from the ladder. I don't know whether they've patched it, but it's weirdly similar to the issue shown here. In Enter the Dragonfly, it's pretty funny, but in Reignited? Kind of embarrassing.
the problem with this game is that about a quarter of it was done by the time they released it, no bug testing either of course, rushing products is just so great.
Still love this game, and now I have more glitches to laugh at, didn't know about the swimming glitch.

The only major Spyro i havent had the hearth to complete.
If they just added a simple instruction to do a ray trace to the ground every second and set Spryo to 'falling' mode if he is far away enough from the ground, they could have gotten rid of most of the walk and swim through air glitches completely.
That's how bad they rushed this game. Some producers were getting cheap in this time period, outsourcing their games to unproven studios. They rarely make that mistake these days, except with the PC port of Arkham Knight lol.

I remember one time in Crop-Circle County, I have no clue how I did it, but I made the complete ground texture disappear and I was just running around on invisible ground.

I love the Spyro series and have grown up with this game, I think that this video should be posted to the game's producers and should be re-released after amendments are made. It's not too late to save the game in this valued franchise.

Activision is letting Toys For Bob have complete freedom to handle the Reignited Trilogy however they want and the response from the community has been very positive. I'm wondering now if in the next few years we'll get a proper sequal to the trilogy. Hell, use the basic idea that Ripto and Gnasty Gnork team up. That would be bad ass.

The boss is actually longer and requires ice breath if you get 100% first and you get an ending cutscene......it's not worth it.
It may have problems, but if it wasn't for this age Spyro won't be able to spit out the other three elements. Beside bubble breath. And I'm still gonna get this since I didn't get a chance to play this.
I must of been super lucky when I played Spyro 4 as I never encountered any of these issues playing on the GameCube version. I really enjoyed this game even if it wasn’t as long as it was intended to be

Spyro's idle animation is quite cute but it's a shame the rest of his animations look really unprofessional. It literally looks like a fan-game (although the fan games getting made at the moment are excellent).

But gosh darn it, this was my first ever spyro game and I had a lot of fun with it as a child, so I have a lot of nostalgia for it! My problem with this game (and the gameboy spinoffs) is that they never invented new antagonists. Each time they just recycled Ripto. I never played the second game in the trilogy, so I know nothing about him at all. They lacked creativity with these games.
