The favourite part of my favourite ballet. Giselle was my introduction to ballet, when I stumbled upon while channel surfing on TV as a child. Never danced myself though, and still regret it.
Same here! I started when I was 24, now I’m 30, I’m on pointe shoes and this semester we are doing this exact part from Giselle. Obviously adapted to our level, but the feeling when I nail all six arabesque in a row is just wonderful.
Monica Manson is the greatest Myrtha of all time. But from the modern era Marianela Nunez from the Royal and Angelina Vlashinets + Ekaterina Shipulina from the Bolshoi Ballet are also great as Myrtha. Just look for Ekaterina Shipulina's performance (she's in the full Giselle video with Svetlana Zakharova and Sergei Polunin)
Sometimes I think that the Myrthe scene is my favorite moment of 'Giselle'---or of any ballet, for that matter. I always feel wafted back to Paris...1840s...divine... Adam wrote 14 ballets. Wishing RB might explore 'La filleule des fées' one day?
Have you seen Monica Mason as Myrtha? It’s on TH-cam. Just type that in. BEST MYRTHA EVER. The performance is dreamy! Of course she teaches Myrtha now. That’s also on TH-cam.
can you put the names of the dancers in the description please? 2nd and 3rd looks to me like Beatriz Stix-Brunell and Itziar Mendizabal, not sure about the first soloist.
If I were a choreographer I would make a ballet called Myrtha. This character is hardly ever done well, yet a demanding part and a very interesting role. It might be me but I am hardly ever satisfied with her representation. I believe if one searched a bit on her insides there would be worlds to be discovered. (like Marcia Haydee did with Carabosse). By the way, I adore the second soloist, the girl with the dark hair!
Great idea. There's footage on YT of Monica Mason in the role - if you watch her rehearsing the newer dancers she goes into some depth with the interpretation, and Myrtha's actions. Fascinating.
BRAVA, BRAVA, BRAVA! WHAT CAN ONE SAY! Divine. In my next incarnation if I can't be a Prima Ballerina Assoluta, then let me stitch the costumes, make tea etc, but let me sit front row center as part of my pay! listening to the sounds of her shoes hit the floor like bricks…. and the shaky landing and incomplete transitions…. roh definitely could have made a better decision when casting….
@@audrey2498 Maybe you should make a casting or should try to get the role by yourself. I am sure your opinion is this high ranked and important. You could definitely make it better 🙃😒
This seems under-rehearsed. Both soloists are bit awkward - not graceful and flowing. The Corps as well. Seems an athletic exercise, not conveying the mystery of the Willis.
bruh stap It was definitely intentional, not everything in ballet is 'graceful' and 'flowing', it's acting. Especially in the last performer, they did an amazing job at giving the impression of someone really forced to be dancing with someone until they died; it's almost puppet-like, reflecting their assigned fate as wilis.
Ok one more year you dancing my life when i was russian.....oh... Will not have the replay i Will not kill myself because of manys of you tô bê a "card network
@@anneharrison1849 I've watched this ballet for almost 40 years. Never did I see anyone so graceless in that role as the person dancing in this example. NOR was it said that the role had to be danced in such a way. Nor was it said that the role must be danced by a man. Compare! th-cam.com/video/GYx3lxsCAl4/w-d-xo.html
@@hannahreynolds7611 I looked up this dancer and it isn't any better in anything else. How there was a promotion to principal is incomprehensible. And it is male. The movement is led with the shoulders which is impossible for a woman. A woman's balance is close to the lower abdomen because the hips are large. Men move with their chest because the shoulders are large. This person moves like a man and the quality of movement is different.
It is not even horrible, it is just worth of a bag of rotten tomatoes. This is not Giselle, this is not a ballet, this is not even an acrobatics. A bunch of half-drunk, dragging horses wrapped in tunica.

when the rest of the ballerinas enter it’s literally the most magical think ever
It gives me goosebumps, it's the most beautiful thing I've ever watched. Perfect
My favourite part is always when the corps de ballet dance
Must we wait for a law to be passed that all dancers name appear on the video.Respect dancers.
I agree. Really wish the ROH would take the trouble to name the corps dancers.
The favourite part of my favourite ballet. Giselle was my introduction to ballet, when I stumbled upon while channel surfing on TV as a child. Never danced myself though, and still regret it.
never too late to start
It's not too late! I started dancing ballet last year and I am 44! There may be adult ballet classes in your area. Life's too short to have regrets.

Would be nice if the dancers were credited in the description. Am I right in thinking it's Olivia Cowley, Beatriz Stix-Brunell and Itziar Mendizabal?
I'm pretty sure it is.
Yes, I thought the same! I think those are the dancers
Thank you so much for this. I wondered about their names.
I thought the second was Beatriz too
how can y'all tell the difference though? they look so similar in those hairdos, makeup and costumes
My favorite ballet ever. The second act is the best.
WHO are the soloists????? How disrespectful to not identify them EVERY TIME a video is posted.
@@hannahreynolds7611 Agreed!!!
I believe the first is Olivia Cowley, the second is Beatriz Stix-Brunell and the third (Myrtha) is Itziar Mendizabal!

I don't see much of the Willis plural. Where's that magical part where they all dance together?
Search Giselle Act 2 the Willis Opera de Paris. It's at or near the beginning.
I’m doing this dance In my ballet show and I do not look like that on point 😭😂
No one is better as Myrta as Toni Lander
When you remember they’re dancing literally in front of Giselle’s grave marker though

Am I the only one that thinks Mythra's jumps were really heavy and her upper body was rigid 😬
Well, you don't have to write it this way. Not in public. She don't have the leading role for no reason. 🧐
You try going on point🤣
