I'm disabled now, but I loved doing yard work beforehand. I sit on the grass and use a small hand rake/fork to dethatch. I drag a container around with me to put all the thatch into, as I go across the lawn. Takes me a long time but neighbors have commented on how good it looks & how I've "opened up areas for grass to grow in."
Im looking for a way to remove dead grass without using a dethatcher cos we still dont have garden stuff and their costly, since we just bought our house and we spent a lot already. Your comment helps since I have that small rake. It would make me put on effort but at least it would work. Thanks!
I am so glad to hear someone who is not into powertools like me. There is something therapeutic and back to nature about it. No noise polution. Love composting too. That's money. Both sides of the rake looked the same to me...

Beautiful, outstanding and an awesome helpful video 😊 thank you !Dave the Hillside Gardener for sharing. I just purchased a thatcher rake and love its performance… your TH-cam video is very encouraging and makes me proud to continue to work with hand tools for the yard I
Great video. You have a really clear and calm way of explaining things. I just used my neighbours electric de-thatcher but you've inspired me to do it manually next time. Cheers.
I've sticking to hand tools as well mostly because we don't have enough room in the garage for bigger tools. This vid was very helpful! it's nice exercise!
My Husband and I do most things in our yard & gardens manually, with the exception of mowing & weedwacking. Our lawn is only 9,000 sq ft, so with both of us it’s a manageable task. We are having a problem with lawn fungus, so we are going to manually dethatch with a heavy rake, aerate with a garden fork & treat with a fungicide. My Husband would love that 1st rake you demo’d…have never seen that. Great video & thx for the tips from Boston MA
I use the angled on for like tearing through and the straight side to rake it away. However some tell me I do it wrong but it seems to work for me. Try it both ways and see what does best for you. Good luck
Thank you. This is the best explanation I have seen yet on the use of a manual dethatching break. I have one but I have not understood what side to use for what. Thank you for helping me with that. I have a tall fescue lawn in a transition zone. Can you tell me if I can detach during the fall or at least late summer? Thank you again for your TH-cam channel.
I tried thatching with two regular rakes today, I have a bunch of blisters and I don’t think it worked as well as this specialized rake. I need to buy one or the my lawn professionally done
Hi!! We missed the early spring mark and where we are at already feels like summer (85-920°F). Would you recommend to still going thru or just wait until fall?
Watched this and immediately de-thatched my lawn. Wow a LOT of green material left over. A lot of clover is in my waste, if I use that as mulch (for strawberries) do I run the risk of introducing clover to my strawberry bed?
I never had any issues with that. The only thing I would be worried about would be Bermuda grass or other running plants. But if you compost it down it shouldn't be an issue

Your words are very inspirational!! Never give up or allow limitations to slow you down. Keep doing what you do. thank you for sharing your experience

Yea I've always like just doing things by hand, I think it connects you to nature in way that makes you appreciate everything more.

I like your perspective
Great video, appreciated the dethatcher demonstration and explanation, very thorough.
Hey there thanks a bunch much appreciated

Thanks 🙏. I try to use hand tools as often as possible. It’s not practical if you have an acre yard but for a small lot you can’t beat it.

Thanks for the compliment, I like to do things by hand call me crazy but its more fun in my opinion

I'm glad it was helpful, and yes it's a lot of work but I enjoy doing things by hand
I never seen one of those rakes before . You did a good job on how you used the the clippings .
Thanks sir. It's really useful and beneficial
Dang I like that De Thatching rake! Wish I'd had that yesterday
It does a great job. Worth the investment

Yes that rake us a game changer. I only ever found it at home Depot but I'm sure online you would find many options. Good luck!!
You just said "only" 9,000 square feet. That's a good sized lawn.
Mate, great advice on seeding a thatched lawn and why it wouldn't work at 6:50
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it, sometimes what's in my head I don't adequately explain. Good to know it came through.
can you get rid of juniper moss cap by weedeating it?
Thank you for the info. I will be trying to do this to get rid of the moss thats growing in my yard.
Yes this will do a great job on moss
So which side do you use for pulling up the thatch with the metal detaching rake . . The angles blades or the side with the straight blade ?
I use the angled on for like tearing through and the straight side to rake it away. However some tell me I do it wrong but it seems to work for me. Try it both ways and see what does best for you. Good luck
Thank you for your video, I am planning to do the same in my yard by the end of September, when winter is over in Brazil.
Thanks a lot! My first comment from Brasil, how exciting

Fall is a great time. Just leave enough time in the season for the grass to recover
Thanks for the tip, I have that rake and was not using it correctly at all!
Hey that's great it does a wonderful job helping keep your lawn healthy
thank you
please give the brand of tools
maybe link too
The thatch rake is Ames brand. Bought at Home Depot years ago
Definitely going to have to de-thatch my yard once the rain stops and things can dry out.
It's definitely a workout
Many thanks, very helpful! Lots of dead grass to remove on my law here in North Yorkshire, England.
Now is the perfect time to start! Good luck and take it slow it’s a real workout
I just de thatched the lawn with a rake and I'm tired. SOB that was some good exercise. A dethatcher mower is totally worth it
I can understand that, but with my yard bringing in equipment is impossible so I have to do it the old fashioned way
Great video, thank you. Quick question, it is June 14 now, how efficient would be if I do it now? Thanks.
I'd wait til fall. Disturbing the roots in the middle of summer would potentially kill or overstress the grass.
@@DaveTheHillsideGardener thanks a lot
Yeah, I 100% agree you may get some weird looks, dethatching your lawn, but it's what the soil needs.
Plus free mulch for your garden beds as well
I tried thatching with two regular rakes today, I have a bunch of blisters and I don’t think it worked as well as this specialized rake. I need to buy one or the my lawn professionally done
Yes I picked up mine from Home Depot it's not that expensive and definitely better suited for the job.
The bent side is for cultivating, straight side is for dethatching.
this ^ ^ ^
Hi!! We missed the early spring mark and where we are at already feels like summer (85-920°F). Would you recommend to still going thru or just wait until fall?
Wait til fall 3-4 weeks before your frost so it has time to recover before the cold sets in. It’s also a good time to add fertilizer too
@@DaveTheHillsideGardener very much appreciated! Congrats on the content!!
I was worried about using grass shavings for compost because of weed seeds, is this a valid concern?
If you cut them before they go to seed there is no worry

🎉good information
Glad you enjoyed. Hope it helps
Question: Can St. Augustine grass be dethached?
Yes I wouldn't see a problem
Yes this dethatching rake works great but boy you get a workout from moving it back and forth. Good for small lawns IMHO.
Yes it does... Definitely a good workout but your lawn will thank you for it. Good luck!
Across the road looks nice
Thanks
What prise
What do you mean?
Maybe cost/price of dethatching rake?
$40 from Home Depot. Don’t buy cheaper ones they just fall apart
Where are you located? Looks like the PNW maybe?
West Virginia zone 6b/7a
I thought the same exact thing.
Dave , I think you have to make a sunny day :) because soil should not be wet
Easier said than done hahah our spring is always very wet.
@@DaveTheHillsideGardener 😅
The weather in our country is very different this year, one day rain one day Sunny … one day snowy… in Türkiye 🇹🇷
I imagine that it would be very different. That is what is great about gardening how everyone must adapt to their local conditions
Get a sweat up. Great cardio!
It will definitely make you sweat!
save your life time, and start from 4:20
Not going to lie. Shamefully had to buy a pair of gloves after the blisters healed. 😂
Yes it definitely helps to wear gloves. I've learned my lesson many times over
That looks to be a good thatcher/cultivator..killing two birds with one stone(but I don't kill birds, jsyk) hehe
It's very good but can definitely be a workout
@@DaveTheHillsideGardener lol..i could def use the exercise
Lol well I have Bermuda grass and its amazing. This video is not for me.
Looks like a steeper sloped beach… yikes.
Definitely have some hills here
surely doing that by hand for 20 or 30 years will ruin the discs in your back
Good thing they sell electric ones
But you'll sleep like a baby having done all of that by hand....
