As mentioned, for many Poles it was swapping one dictatorship for another. Britain and France declared war to save Poland, but that was never realistically going to happen, although, at the time they probably didn't realise Stalin was going to put Poland and the rest of Eastern Europe under the Soviet jackboot for the next forty plus years.
