If there is an awkward silence, it is a true sign of things to come down the road....if the guy feels a real connection, there is nothing to stop the conversation flow. However, if a guy is playing the game of awkward silence as a test, that is also a key indicator of drama down the road!

One more tip I know of.
Alcohol is a good social lubricant, if your partner or date over indulges on a date don't waste that chance. Use some of the tips given in these videos. If you get drunk as well you won't remember anything. Use it as a chance to ask him some personal questions and see what makes him tick.
