Decluttering My Apartment & Ethically Downsizing // Manifesting A Move From Texas to Georgia

  • As we’ve begun to pack for our move from San Antonio, Texas to Atlanta, Georgia in earnest, I’ve been trying to make sure we move as ethically as possible. In this video, I’ll discuss different resources I’m utilizing to ethically downsize our belongings without creating more waste in our landfills. We’re not a corporation or government but every individual can do whatever is in the power to limit their waste as much as possible. Creating this video and giving myself the challenge of packing and downsizing without throwing things away was very eye-opening. It made me think more critically about how I shop, and what I choose to bring into my space. Also, I got $4 whole American dollars for all of those cables and cords! I essentially got paid to recycle my stuff ✨🤸🏿‍♀️✨

    Hey! music teacher here:
Something I started doing was donating my music books to local lesson studios.
One of the things I realize now is that those lesson materials are pretty expensive and sometimes the idea of having to buy 10-15 dollar lesson books just for a child to go through it in a month or so just to buy another one can be a hard sell for some families.
I started keeping a core set of the ones I know I pull materials from a lot, make copies for students when needed, or upload them online to redistribute via e-mail and stuff. Otherwise, I donate the extras.
I feel like the FBI is already tracking this comment, but just a thought.

There are gaps in sustainability in this practice, and I acknowledge that.

Hahah I mean, I definitely remember paying for music books and being like “dang, how is learning an instrument so expensive?!”
Lord knows I was on those Limewire equivalent sites looking for sheet music soooo 🌚

Local buy nothing groups have been a favorite of mine. You connect with people who live close to you. It’s based off the gift economy, so you ask for what you need and give freely. I’ve been able to find items so that I don’t always have to buy new, and I usually find someone who wants the stuff I no longer need. It has been especially amazing when it comes to baby and kids items.

Not sure if you’re in a house or apartment and tbh it doesn’t matter for my info lol what I’ve been doing prepping for my move is using a big box with the words “free” written on it. Sit it outside your door and ppl will just take what they need. I constantly add to it and things that have been sitting for at least a week that haven’t been claimed go into a FB marketplace box. That box I then make a post about on fb marketplace and usually someone will write to claim it within 7 minutes I’m not even kidding. I’ve even done this with food in my pantry fridge and freezer (post it on marketplace that is) Hair products etc happy downsizing!

I sooooo feel this struggle rn, it’s so hard to declutter and downsize ethically and mindfully and it’s soooo easy to consume and “upsize” unethically whiteout even meaning to. This hit home for me.

I've recently been thinking about the ways I create waste and how to address the thought processes behind my consumption, so this is really timely! I'm not moving, but you know, the earth and other such things. it has been beneficial to think about why I buy things and how to just buy less. And also to really appreciate and enjoy and care for what I have, to be a good steward of it, because I do have a lot, and i'm so grateful for it. And I so often get caught up in wanting _more_ that I never really stop to do that.

    • @hallease

Because they’re incredibly old and permanently stained/stink. I’ve donated to shelters and rescues in the past with new materials. This corporation takes my unusable fabrics and turns them into insulation, keeping them out of the landfill which is my goal in this video.

Kijiji can be a good place to list things for free or for sale when you don't need them anymore, especially if you don't have other "freecycle" style sites for your area. You can usually find people willing to pick things up for free or cheap, especially if you're just looking to unload some things.
I do feel compelled to point out that the salvation army isn't a great place to donate because they are anti-gay and anti-trans.

      @InspiredByEbonyLove 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Interesting. They help people who are both. Had to stay at one of their shelters and another resident was what they now call “ trans”, a very big and obvious man who dressed to appear as a female. I never heard of or saw him being mistreated or turned away for that. They also assist ANYONE Who qualifies with utility assistance & food distribution. You don’t have to follow their religion to benefit from their services.

I'm so IN TUNE with what you are doing right now, I've been on a transition to semi-minimalism. While i find definition minimalism-1 bowl, 1 spoon, 1 fork, 1 knife, etc-unrealistic for me (I have kids) I've been downsizing my "stuff" so that I don't pass down bad habits and I've grown to understand that experiences are so much more important and enjoyable than ANOTHER sweater, or play-station game.
