  • Actually Using the Roland J-6
I've made quite a few jam videos with the Roland J-6 so far, but I haven't really talked about how I actually use it in my daily music producing workflow. It's really as simple as plugging it into my compute via USB, firing up Ableton, and playing with different chord progressions and rhythmic styles/variations! I find that I'm often easily able to hear new melodies based on chords and rhythms that I wouldn't typically come up with on my own, and it's super inspiring! Enjoy the video :)

I love it when you just plug stuff together and it works

I played with a J6 in a store recently and as someone who really has very little musical knowledge but would love to maybe do a little dabbling it was very fun to use and I got some really surprising loops going. I think I will end up getting one to help me get a bit of inspiration to do something.

Would this work on an iPad with say logic? Could I play chords with the j6 but use logics synth sounds?

Damn why can't I remember I have VSTs and these MIDI units work with those?!? Thanks for demonstrating this bc my J6 just got a ton more interesting!

It's funny, because Roland had a chord mode in the Alpha Juno 1 and 2 all the way back in 1985. It does work differently, you have to input the cord manually, but say you know the chord in C, well it will now play the same chord in E, D, F, G, A etc.

You're one of my favourite TH-camrs. Simply because you are the most honest & you do music like i do. Not a ton of music theory, but a lot of enthusiasm! Fantastic! 🙃

The Roland AIRA Compacts are really amazing. I like all of them for different reasons, but yeah...I keep forgetting to use J-6 as more than a portable Juno, so thanks for forcing my mind in other directions! 😅

Hi, your videos are great - could you kindly post something about how to do what you're doing in this video with the J6 but in Logic Pro X instead of Ableton? - I have tried but am getting nowhere I am afraid! Thanks

More about the funny noises from the VST than actually using the J6, just saying. Not ' cool' at all...

Good Job. Cool Video. I like what you are doing. I currently prefer to use the J6 with other hardware synths to test the chord banks with it.

Right now, I've got a Theoryboard plugged into a J-6 into an E-Mu Virtuoso 2000 into a Boss Dimension C into a Nu-X Atlantic. It does not hurt my feelings.

My biggest gripe with the J-6 is not being able to use the reverb and delay through the audio input :( I have a 3D printed 'keyboardless case' for my Arturia MicroFreak and the J6 to accompany it would be a 100% perfect solution if only I could've routed the audio engine of the 'freak through the onboard effects of the J-6. C'est la vie.

Nice vid, I have a J6 and I cannot figure out how to change the key of the chord sets, I thought the increments would be semitones but it doesn’t seem to be the case?

I have the roland mc 101 and a keystep , can i use the mc 101 as sound module, the j6 for the chords progression and the keystep for triggering the chords?

Well this sure is something the NTS-1 J6 oscillator can't do :D Will have to muck around with the Keystep chord function instead one day, but I'm a lazy n00b (for who the J6 would also be pretty helpful, actually).

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah that custom oscillator is great, but it doesn't do this lol.

    Hello,
    A question for the experts.
*How do I connect devices with built-in sounds
Directly to a control keyboard that has no sounds?
*Which cables do I need? And what is the friend why?
    - I have: launchkey 25 mk Novation control keyboard
and want to connect it for example:
    to CIRCUIT TRACKS.
Or - for the Roland device / Roland Aira S-1
    and use their sounds.
    Many thanks to the helpers

You use a midi cable .
From midi out of your controller (keyboard with no sounds) to the midi in of your sound module (aira j6 or s1 , etc)
The thing is that the airas have midi over a mini plug jack, so you will need an adapter (they usually come together when you buy a module that has midi over minijack but i dont know if the airas compact do include the adapter)
      Hope that helps

Hi think you can use the templates in Ableton to make it sound pro has well as the J-6. but anyway as soon as you add the drums you can make any bad sound cool. if you like me suck at sound design.
